Does Event Viewer have anything recorded for this fail and if so, does the blue online help link give any info other than resetting the update components ?

It may be that the remaining corruption in the Package files is generating this error.

Nothing relevant seems to be recorded on Event Viewer.

Wow - interesting... When I try to run LPKSETUP I can not uninstall any language packs - the uninstall program will not run. I get a Microspft VisualC++ runtime library error: "This application has requested the Runtime terminate in an unusual way"

I've tried this
1. Run cmd with Administrator privilege.
2. Use "dism /online get-packages" option to get packages infomatiom.
3. Then use "dism /online remove-package" to remove then language pack.
Doesnt work.
Also tried this:
1. Click start Menu, and open regedit with Administrator privilege.
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\
3. Delete the Language package keys.
4. Then try to redownload the updates, and then uninstall it.
But "CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\" doesnt exist on my machine

I'm not sure where to look on event viewer
Is it not possible to fix the last 149 cat/mum files?

The fact that you can't uninstall language packs is a little scary lol. Im not sure what removing the reg keys will do.

Damn There is no possible way to rebuild that regkey! back up all your files and do a repair install... I hate to have to tell you to do that but there is no way of fixing that but a repair install...

Do you have any idea how this might have happened? Could it be using CCleaner?
Also any idea where I can get a copy of windows from. Asus website won't help and I have no recovery partition..

I have found the answer to the recovery media question http://www.techfleece.com/2015/12/23/download-official-isos-of-windows-7-windows-8-1-or-windows-10-legally-and-for-free/ - on this site!

Has CCleaner caused this sort of problem before?

Thanks for your help anyway!

To download a Win 7 ISO from MS you need a valid retail key - neither your COA sticker or the vendor's generic key will do.

See if you can change the product key to your COA sticker key by going Start - type Slui 3 - press enter then enter your COA sticker key to see if it will accept it.

Another method to activate is in this article - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/can-oem-product-key-be-used-to-re-install-windows/2669057f-28d6-455c-bc44-e0e68c2e3b33?auth=1

If that's the case then I can burn & send you a couple of Win 7 x64 SP1 universal install disks (one spare) - just PM me your address.

They are universal because I removed the eicfg file from the ISO so that it covers  from Starter to Ultimate.

If you don't have a key that will activate as genuine then you won't be able to perform a repair install.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Prior to performing the repair install, you can back up your drivers from C:\Windows\System32 where you should see 3 folders and then you can drag & drop them back in afterward if need be.
