Title: Heads Up! XP and Legacy OS users
Post by: Samson on June 23, 2017, 12:16:52 pm
MS have put out a load of updates this month for XP and other Legacy OS, Win 8 and Vista to counter against an "elevated risk of cyberattacks by government organizations"...."These security updates are being made available to all customers, including those using older versions of Windows." - Adrienne Hall, general manager of crisis management at Microsoft. More info here...http://www.techrepublic.com/article/new-windows-xp-patch-microsoft-issues-extraordinary-fix-to-protect-pcs-against-next-wannacry/

List of updates for XP in the link below. Not available via auto updates, but can be obtained from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

I was under the impression that MS had pushed the updates for these older versions through the normal channels following the WannaCry attack.

However, this article supports your thread which also has download links - https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/msrc/2017/05/12/customer-guidance-for-wannacrypt-attacks/

It is a bit odd that MS go to the trouble of putting out these updates for legacy OS but don't make them available via automatic updates. Users have to firstly be aware of their existence and then have to actively seek them out and install them. If they had been put out through automatic updates they (MS) would surely get a better take up rate?

EDIT The link in your post is just for the single May patch, My first post gives links to the chunk issued in June, I think I had 9 then.

I think the article was dated May so wouldn't have had the later patches, although I thought it covered what regular version users will have received in the March updates.

That is right and then the multiple updates in June covered the remainder of the NSA's Eternal Blue vulnerabilities.
