Looks good :cheesy: - couldn't wait to download and then to upgrade to the Pro version. Thanks to Shane and all involved for a great utility!!!

If either of you are using Win 8.1 or above, can you create a restore point in the back up section and then check System Protection to see if it is listed.

It isn't doing it for me in my Win 10, but I'd manually created a registry back up first, although that shouldn't have affected that as Shane was able to create multiple consecutive restore points in his Win 10.

Apparently from Win 8/8.1 you couldn't create another restore point within 24hrs of the last one but Shane has sorted the registry keys to override that.

I was at a Clients today, when I opened the tool to run, as always, it asked if I wanted to update to 4.0, so I did. It DL the new files, but removed the start Icon, I click on the new 4.0 file and asked for a password to unzip, no clue what that would be...and was useless at that point... GRRR client wasn't happy I had to come back to run the scan, whith anothe FD, but didn't click to upgrade.  whats going on???  I paid for Pro, does going to 4.0 make your (working) tools not work any more.  FYI: I use this on flash drives... and all was working fine up until today...... any help with this??  Thanks all, and love this tool, (besides today)  Please help!!

Boggin,

Sorry, I'm still on Windows 7. I have the Registry Backup element of the program set to create an automatic backup every day if I fire up the laptop,  which works smoothly, and have the option ticked to create only one auto backup a day, so I don't create multiple backups per day unnecessarily. However, having that option ticked means that if you want to create a manual registry backup later that day, it won't do it unless you get rid of or move the auto backup for the day or temporarily toggle off the option to only create one auto backup per day. I have raised the issue but it's not been addressed. I realise the Registry Backup tool is not modified in WRAIO v4.0 but it would be nice to change this behaviour.

Pro fix,

I downloaded v 4.0 and installed over v3 Pro, then chose to upgrade to the v 4.0 Pro version, when I was taken through a payment process where I used PayPal to cough up 11 GBP plus VAT, which I was happy to do. During the process, there was some mention of 'modifying my product key to work with v 4.0' and then all was sunshine and light, with all features enabled.

I didn't go that route.

When I came onto the forum yesterday and saw that v4.0 had bee released, I used the direct download button and that went seamlessly on clicking Run on the download from v3.9.36 Pro to v4.0 Pro.

I've never used the portable version, but perhaps you should download it afresh.

If you still get problems after a fresh install, then I'll pass it onto Shane.

@ Still_Game - Thanks.

I have no problem with the registry backing up, although I only do it manually now and again, but it's the restore points that are not being physically created, even though it says it has with a date and time stamp in the program.

I'm going to leave it for a couple of days and without creating a registry back up, I'll try creating a restore point again.

@ Boggin

I'll have a play around with the restore points creation process in WR later when I get a chance and see how things work for me. I usually create any restore points from a shortcut direct the Windows process rather than from within the Tweaking.com program.

It's just that it's a further back up option prior to running the repairs, but if it doesn't create one and you aren't aware, then if you use the restore point option in the program to revert, the computer will just hang because there's nothing there for it to restore from.

This has happened twice to me on a Win 7 machine and in frustration I power shut down and end up with nothing with the machine not booting up into any mode.

Fortunately, I have my laptops to check the DVD drive before HDD so can boot up with a repair or install disk to restore with a system image.

Not everyone may have things set up this way or have system images and they are going to end up being screwed if a restore point is not created for them.

I agree it would be better to actually go to System Protection to use the restore points, but because the program also has the restore option, many will probably use that.

@Boggin

Yes, you're right - the Create a Restore Point option in WRAIO doesn't work, certainly in W7. I created a restore point using WRAIO (which was a suspiciously fast operation), installed a program and then attempted to roll back by restoring using Windows' inbuilt System Restore. All proceeded as expected until Windows restarted when I got the message below:-

System Restore
System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and
settings were not changed
Details:
System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore
point.
Source
%SystemRoot%registration
Destination: ComPlusStaging
You can try System Restore again and choose a different restore point. If you
continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method. For more
information, see What is Recovery?
Run System Restore
Close

So it will have physically created the restore point in Win 7 as it does in my Win 7.

While I haven't tried to restore with it, my problem is that it doesn't physically create a restore point in my Win 10.

Can you create another restore point both though the program and through System Protection and take the same precautions as I have to recover from a system image when you try the restores through System Protection and then through the program.

Doing the System Protection created one first will tell you if they are working.

Try both in Safe Mode to eliminate an antivirus program from interfering.

Bought the 3-computer license for Repair v4 yesterday, applied to an existing stable system on a Dell Optiplex 960, Win 7 SP1, all updates, which has been gracefully maintained with occasional applications of Repair V3 repairs over the past few years.

However, I removed V3, restarted, installed V4, restarted in "Safe" mode (which, btw, is really "unsafe" mode!), and ran V4 Repair with requisite "Power Drain" and all other steps, and ran a second time.  System ended up being very, very, VERY slow...sometimes took over 90 seconds for another newly-opened window to appear, and then it might not be responsive to a mouse click.

I rolled back to my C: backup from the night before.  V4 might need some further testing?

While I direct downloaded v4 onto v3 I haven't ran it yet on my Win 10.

I'll update the program on my Win 7 and see if I get a case of slow after I've ran it and get back to you.

If you are talking about a browser window slow to open, run a cmd prompt as an admin by going Start - type cmd - right click on cmd and select Run as administrator - accept the UAC and type the following cmds, pressing enter after each.

netsh winsock reset catalog

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

shutdown /r /t 00

and then see how they perform after the reboot.

Well it has been a disaster for me running v4.0 on my Win 7 laptop.

The machine was frozen after the reboot on completion of the repairs so booted up into Safe Mode with Networking to use the program's registry back up but it was even frozen in that mode.

Power shut down again and booted up into Safe Mode with Command Prompt and ran the cmd rstrui.exe to get to my restore points.

Selected the one I'd created prior to updating to v4.0 which took about 30 mins only to find that when I opened 3.9.36 that it had corrupt files.

Downloaded 3.9.36 only to find that it would only download v4.0.

Time to use my system images just to find it couldn't find any images on either of the external HDDs I use alternatively.

Booted up into Safe Mode with Networking to open the program to see what registry back ups there were and chose one for the 11th June, which was probably too far back - it was as I just ended up with a black screen and a white arrow.

I've booted up with an install disk to use the System Restore and it's currently restoring back to the 18th June.

When I did a scan for affected programs, Windows Repair wasn't even listed, so I await with apprehension as to what it's going to give me.

I think I may have to factory reset the machine which is a job and a half in itself, but I'm still going to be stuck with v4.0 when I reinstall the programs if it still doesn't find any images on those ext. HDDs after.

alright so right now i'm turning on my windows 7 virtual machine and ill run and test this to figure out what is happening ill make a video for Shane to review as well and see if i can duplicate everything that has happened so right now what has been reported is slow startup speeds and freezing in the reboots even in safemode.

@ Boggin

Sorry to hear about your woes - in the light of these problems, I'm not going to try any more experiments with v 4.0 for the moment. I use Casper 10 to make complete bootable backups to duplicate physical hard drives so things are somewhat different for me. The only repair I've yet made with v 4.0 has been to run the Firewall repair option on W7 to clear left-over entries. I really hope you can get your Windows 7 laptop back to normal without too much grief.

@ Julian

Do you have a link to the latest previous version,  3.9.6, just in case I want to reinstall until v 4.0 problems are resolved? I'm pretty sure I don't have a copy as the last couple of times I updated, I did it from within WRAIO.

Post by: Boggin on July 27, 2017, 01:21:07 am
On the home page at www.tweaking.com you have all of the links for previous versions, but clicking on any only gets you v4.0.

Trying the restore points booted up with an install disk initially returned as failed with an unexpected error 0x800700b7 so tried another restore point which also failed with the same unexpected error, but this time it was 0x8000ffff

Anyway, I closed that window and the machine rebooted which then gave me the message that the restore was successful.

However, when I opened v3.9.35 that also had corrupt files so that will need reinstalling which I won't be able to do.

I've since run an offboot sfc /scannow which has come back clean, but on trying the system image restore, it's still reporting it cannot find an image on the ext. HDD.

It's starting to look more an more like a factory reset and then perhaps it will be able to find the image, but I'll still have to do all of the preparatory work in case it doesn't.

I think that's going to be a job for another day.

So far only  3 or so people have reported any problems running on windows 7, I am trying to replicate the problems right now as I type this, anything I can replicate I can fix.

Can you tell me what repairs you ran? I just finished running all the repairs that had been updated since v3 and there was no problem, so now I am running all the repairs to see what happens.

So any extra info on what you did and ran will help me :-)

I cant seem to replicate the problem at all with my windows 7 in vmware.

Do me a fav and send me an email. Make sure you make a current backup of your system that you can restore, I found a few changes from v3 to v4 in the repairs and I am going to undo them and have you try out a new build and see if it fixes it. If it doesnt I want you to be able to restore back, since I cant replicate it I need your help to find the problem :-)

Okay - I manually created a restore point before updating to v4.0 and then again before running the repairs, but with restoring back so far to try and resolve the system image problem, they'll be gone.

I'm on one of my Win 10 laptops at the moment but will boot the Win 7 one up in readiness.

So are you going to send me a .zip of like you did with the beta v4.0 ?
