General Computer Support / How dumb can one be?
« on: April 04, 2015, 01:35:25 pm »
I am 67 years old.  That being said, I am technically proficient...I've forgotten more than these young "whippersnappers" have learned.  <Ha!>

I have just had an incident (an old man incident) that embarrasses me (!) regarding earphones.  I, three times in as many days, plugged my earphones into the improper jack.  Dadgummit!  I could hear something but it wasn't near loud enough.  The microphone jack does have audio, as I've found out.  It's just not normal volume.

Were all my problems as simple to solve....  <YeeHah!>

General Computer Support / ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
« on: September 13, 2014, 03:05:34 pm »
This is version: 8.632.1.2000 of ATI software.

INFO:  ACER Aspire 5517; Windows 7, X64, Enterprise (no surprise!); No other problems that are observable.  4GB RAM and 250 GB HDD (25%);

Symptom:  Screen randomly goes dark (becoming more prevalent);  Takes many multiple clicks of the Fn and F6 keys (back-light) to restore the back-light;  Using the ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics driver (8.632.1.2000);  Using built-in properties and their website, I have latest driver;

Is this a software problem or a driver problem?  Hopefully, that's all it is!  Is it hardware (I doubt it, due to the ability to restore via keyboard (Fn/F6);  Again, I have the latest driver edition.

Have you all any idea???? what might be causing these outages of screen presentation from ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics?  I've done my on-line research and have found nothing commensurate.

I'm very nervous about this and have NO backup computer.

Thank you for your interest and assistance from an old retired engineer.

Acer 5517;  Windows 7 Enterprise x64;  4 GB RAM;  No Driver updates since Jan/Feb this year;

This is really upsetting:  the LCD screen will go DARK without warning and without reason.  Normally, I use the Fn:F6 combination to darken the screen between sessions.  This morning, 5/28/14, during boot, the screen went DARK without prompting.  I have had to use the Fn:F6 combination repeatedly since then, all morning to get back the "back-light" of the LCD.  It happens, as I've noticed, when I start a major program (Chrome, et al)

I have checked the "Power Settings" and it is set to never go DARK and never Sleep without a command.

I can't find the actual "driver" or program that controls this.  I've never encountered this before and it is kind'a scary.

I "have a feeling" that it is software and NOT hardware causing the new problem.  Any ideas or concepts?

Thanks!!!

Howdy, Shane.  I have a long boot because of svchost.exe, seemingly because of the WIFI network svchost.exe.  I'm running Windows 7 x64 Enterprise.  4 GB RAM.

System Explorer tells me that svchost.exe (of which there are MANY within Windows!) is utilizing near 100% CPU cycles at boot,.  It is taking "forever" to get ready to use.  Here's a clue:  When I "disconnect" from the wireless network and connect to another wireless network within my area, I get the very same svchost.exe utilizing near 100% CPU cycles for 4 to 5 minutes at a time.  This has been a very recent occurrence and is out of the ordinary.  My "System Explorer" tells me nothing more than what I've conveyed.  I'm perplexed and kind'a frustrated that I can't figure out the cause of it!

I've run all the tests, et al,  from Windows Repair and can't seem to get a "feel" for the solution.  Any ideas?

Specs:  Acer Aspire 5517; Windows 7 HP, X64, SP1;

The Webcam, built-in to the laptop, has worked well until recently.  Now, the Acer-provided application (Acer/SuYin v. 5.0.9.1 application) can not find the Webcam.  I did make sure that the Global Settings of Flash (Adobe) were OK, or at least normal, as I remember them.

Any suggestions as to the direction I should pursue?  The driver says it is operating properly.

Tweaking.com Support & Help / New Registry Backup Setup file
« on: August 31, 2013, 06:47:46 am »
I downloaded, at Majorgeeks.com, your new Registry Backup Setup file.  My Advanced System Care (IObit) (Bit Defender A/V) indicated a Trojan called: variant.Symmi.15697.  Is it part of the software and safe, or is it something that should be avoided?

Thanks.

Shane, today I ran both chkdsk and SFC /f /r.  I copied the CBS Log and have attached it, along with some JPEG's of ResMon's of System Restore running and not running.  I hope this'll help you in the Beta creation of Repair System Restore.

There is no help out there for this problem, that I've found.

Feedback & Suggestions / Registry Compressor (portable) is Great tool
« on: April 27, 2013, 11:58:53 am »
 :smiley:  Shane, again, Thanks! for a wonderful tool to keep our computers clean and mean.  I just used the Reg Compressor in portable version.  The re-boot, after the Reg Compressor did its thing, was way-faster than it has been in a long time.  Woo-Hoo!

btw:  Still looking for a solution for my System Restore problem(s).  M$ doesn't even acknowledge my blog entries; they tell me to go to the professional blog site and register there.  Ha!

Shane, I was anxious to try the new Windows Repair Beta section.  I thought it was :confused: OK for a while.  I watched Resource Monitor PID 4 and saw it start to eat up the HDD time-wise:  near 100% nearly all the time.  I think it stange that the list in the bottom section in Res Mon shows many / multiple Volume System Information files being read both Background and Normal at the same time.  Hmmm?  I wish I could figure out what's going on in there.  Ha!!!
 :confused:

I have attached 4 (four) files to this missive.  If they do not get to you, let me know.

SCNDSK and SFC /f show NO damage to Windows files.  System Restore is going crasy with disc access.  I have performed multiple SKNDSK, as well as sfc /f.  Abolutely no errors ('cept the stuff I deleted, as seen in the attached files).

There is something WRONG w/i Windows 7 HP X64 that is causing System Restore to be a disk HOG!

According to the multiple blogs I've read, many, many people are experiencing the same thing.  Your System Restore repair did not work for me and I'm sure that M$ is not telling all it knows.

I hope and trust that these files will lead us/you into the correction zone.  (end zone - it is SuperBowl weekend)  HA!

I hope that this will lead to a better understanding of the Windows System Restore and its hidden "assets".

Thank you, Shane, and look forward to working with you on this little skirmish w/i M$ and Windows 7 x64.

Sincerely,

Drive Speedometer!!!!   I couldn't do without it, now.   It really fun and educational to watch the R/W action of the HDD, right there on the top of my desktop.

Again, thank you, Shane, and please know that all of us appreciate your expertise and desire to help us!

Shane, I want to tell you that the latest version of Windows Repair portable has seemingly solved a perplexing problem with Windows System Restore.  (Win 7 HP x64 SP1)  After much research, I was left with no definitive answer from M$.  I was instructed that a Repair Install would likely solve the problem: 90 - 100% HDD access to/from System Volume Information file, constantly!

I downloaded and ran the portable version of Windows Repair (v 1.9.0.4) and re-started System Restore and created a restore point.  Lo and behold, the System PID 4 is behaving itself.  Woo-Hoo.

I trust that I'm not jinxing myself by bragging to you.  Wonderful program...OH! and let me thank you for the Drive Speedometer.  I keep in on screen and it is so reassuring to know what's going on in HDD land.

Have a good weekend and a wonderful new year.  It can't get too much worse. [/sarcasm off]

General Computer Support / Win 7 HP/SP1 Hard Drive constant R/W
« on: December 21, 2012, 02:05:32 pm »
Windows 7 Home Premium w/ SP1;

For two (2) days now, the HD LED access annunciator is constantly "ON" or is flashing very rapidly.  According to System Explorer, there is no CPU problem (normal range of usage), System.exe is sporadic and there is very little actual data being read or written to HD.  :shocked:  I have turned-off the Network access to the internet with no change in HD access.  I have turned-off my ASC 5 with A/V Pro scanner with no change in HD access.  I have made sure that Drive Indexing is still off.  I have watched this LED for two and one-half days, now.   :thinking:

Any ideas you might have to locate and/or stop the process which is causing this constant drain on the reaction time of the system would be appreciated! :smiley:

Everything Else / Marriot Hotel and Starbucks' T-3 internet daily problem
« on: September 15, 2012, 10:31:59 am »
Shane, this problem should be placed at the bottom of your list!  That being said, I would ask of you to help me explain and suggest options of approach to assist the local Marriot Hotel / Starbucks (my morning hangout) engineering department solve an on-going problem of "missing or ignored packets".  They have a valid T-3 line (proven speed is not an issue!).  My daily problem is page loading and internet "resets".  I consistently get 30 to 70 % ping loss to Google.com and any other address I choose.  Frustrating! I must use multiple-clicks for any link(s) I desire to visit.

Question:  What should I tell and/or suggest to these Hotel Engineers to assist in their finding the solution to the daily dilemma?

Thank you, in advance, for your consideration and reply to me!!!!

Feedback & Suggestions / Simple System Tweaker add-on?
« on: August 17, 2012, 01:59:14 pm »
Shane, I really like the NEW Simple System Tweaker.  I use Wireless all the time; seldom LAN.  How about a Tweak for watching a Wireless Network for dropouts and lost data like you have for a LAN connection?  That's something I could REALLY use, everyday.  With my Broadcom interface, I don't have a clue as to the integrity of the network.

Just a thought.  I sure do enjoy and use your products!

Feedback & Suggestions / Just saying "Thank you!"

With your patient and knowledgeable guidance, my Updates and SFC /scannow are working, plus I've installed SP1 and 100+ security Updates from MS.  Feels so good!

Thank you all!

I love the Windows Repair - All in One!  Somehow, my computer says that Windows Resource Protector can not start SFC /scannow.  The step in the All-in-One won't do the SFC, either.  Any ideas on this problem?  Windows 7 Home Premium x64 OS.
