Sometimes an AV program can be responsible for blocking and the safest way to eliminate it normally would be to boot up into Safe Mode with or without Networking.

While you can run a sfc /scannow or a chkdsk /f or /r in that mode, you may also be able to run the /restorehealth cmd as well.

You would need to have Safe Mode with Networking for it to access the store.

If you get a red cross on the WiFi icon then wire up as I believe wireless doesn't work in that mode in Win 8/8.1.

Windows Firewall kicks in when in that mode when a 3rd party AV program is in normal use as that is not loaded or are any other 3rd party applications.

I wouldn't say GOM was the best of the best if adware is a condition of using it and there are many happy people who like VLC - but each to their own.

Adware can leave a computer vulnerable to all sorts of backdoor exploits.

6528
If you are still getting the error, first unplug the USB cable to see if it continues, but you can also run Driver Verifier.

Can't guarantee when you or I will get a response though as he has a fair bit going on at the moment.

6530
Update on this - MBAM came back clean, so will email Shane.

6531
Was that in the lower pane or in the report ?

It would seem that it considers it as adware, but it has previously removed a small program for me.

JRT doesn't show you what it will remove so you only see the end result, but you could navigate the registry to see if that folder/key gives any more details as to what it applies to.

6532
So do you get an error code with the error message ?

Then you will just have to put up with then or use a different media player such as VLC.

Try AdwCleaner followed by a scan with Junkware Removal Tool - the link for JRT is lower down the AdwCleaner page.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

For Adw - click on Scan and that may list items in the lower pane it considers adware - just uncheck any you want to keep.

When the scan has completed, click on Report which will show you what it has found and will delete when you close that and click on Cleaning - it will produce another report after the reboot to show what it has removed.

For JRT - just run that until it completes.

6535
Have you tried the /restorehealth cmd with your antivirus program disabled or in a clean boot with all start up items and non-MS services unchecked in msconfig ?

6536
They must have a Contact us link on their website so I'd still contact them as they may be able to supply you with a legacy driver.

What does Device Manager display ?

6537
Perhaps they are what is generating that error message.

6538
I'll email him with a link to this thread, but a scan with my Norton Security hasn't snagged it.

I'll run MBAM to see if it does, but its scan takes about 40mins so will have to get back to you on that and will delay my email to Shane until I know what that does.

6539
Okay.

6540
Could it be a problem with the cable ?

Going back to your edited Reply #2 - I would contact Nikon to see if they have any drivers for your model as it may have been discontinued.

6541
That could be your chipset or video drivers you may need to download.

Have a look in Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices and look for any yellow alerts with it connected.

6542
Don't know - where did you find that bit in AIO ?

6543
So your XP laptop is okay ? and you are having problems with the Win 7 desktop which doesn't have a wireless NIC fitted ?

6544
Let's just work on one machine at a time.

Describe exactly what is happening or not with the Win 7 laptop.

What error code does it give for it and does it occur for any particular application ?

6546
Running SFCFix.exe should show you just what files sfc /scannow is unable to repair and give a more concise report and in some cases can fix them.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/sfcfix.html

You could also try a Refresh - I assume you are using Win 8.1 ?

6547
I wonder if it's worth resetting FP...

Open All Control Panel Items - right click on Flash Player - Open and under the Advanced tab, hit the Delete all button for the Browsing Data and Settings and see how that goes.

6548
I think we are talking at cross purposes...

Is it the Win 7 laptop that is wireless capable but it isn't working ?

Is this the same machine that you have the Bluetooth dongle plugged into  and if so, does wireless work when you remove the Bluetooth dongle ?

6549
What is the make of your computer and have you checked your computer support site for that driver ?

There is no need to edit out a DHCP IPv4 address as it's only an internal address assigned by the router.

If it starts 169. then DHCP hasn't been able to assign it an address and that has been assigned by Windows, so it's best to leave the info from an ipconfig /all intact.

I'm not familiar with any router switches that would facilitate what you describe.

If it's an ISP supplied router, then I suggest you contact them for guidance on this or if practical, buy a proper wireless dongle.

I think this is for your locale, but I don't recognise the currency symbol.

Most routers have a WPS button, but it's advised not to use those to connect as it does it without the need to enter the password which makes it vulnerable to crack.

As for the loopback, it's something I've never used and looking it up have found these two articles which may be of help.
