So if I delete that from \User and run the Pre-Scan again, it won't pop as missing ?

You could try deleting the cache etc. to see if that helps.

 http://www.thewindowsclub.com/delete-browsing-history-cookies-data-edge

There is a registry key that you can delete that will break Edge and you would use a Shell cmd to reinstall it.

While the Shell cmd in this article  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/reset-microsoft-edge-browser-to-default-settings-in-windows-10 is slightly different to the one warned about in http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php/topic,3971.0.html I think it would be wise to leave any Shell get apps cmds alone.

Been having a Google about that dub_cm_auto and it would seem that it's related to a Norton update and was complained about in 2014.

I recently ran Norton Power Eraser on that machine which gave me an updated version, so assume it came from there, but it is safe to delete.

I'll have a go at that tomorrow but puzzled why it is being snagged as a missing Reparse Point.

I'm not familiar with Vista - just a Win 7 user but from a Google to change the backup settings, in your first pic, click on Change settings then on Change backup settings and follow the wizard to which I have no info, but if you were previously successfully creating auto backups then you will already know the procedure.

In your second pic it gives you three trouble shooting options to try - have you tried those ?

I occasionally run ESET Free Online Scanner for an in depth scan but it seems to be a but chewy downloading at the moment, but you can give it a try. http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

Check the two boxes for PuPs and PuMs then click on Advanced then check the box for unsafe applications - you don't normally need to do the archives or Proxy.

A useful program to have installed is the free version of MBAM https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

When it has updated its Definitions click on Settings/Detection and Protection then use the dropdowns to change to Treat as malware for the PuPs and PuMs.

It also has a box for Rootkits if you want to select that for its initial scan but will extend the scan time.

I go into services.msc and disable the MBAM service to stop it starting with Windows as I prefer to decide what runs in the background.

When you are satisfied that you are infection free, run this ESET program to repair services usually damaged by infections and then check if the services are or can be started.

This is an active link - http://kb.eset.com/library/ESET/KB%20Team%20Only/Malware/ServicesRepair.exe

If that doesn't do it, you can download the services from http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/236709-services-restore-default-services-windows-7-a.html

The left hand column are all active links for their download.

You'll probably need Windows Firewall, Base Filtering Engine, Windows Defender, Security Centre (which I don't see listed but you can get it from http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/win-services/7/wscsvc.reg), Base Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), and Windows Update.

7208
Are you sure you are infection free ?

You'll probably need to go to your computer support site and look for the keyboard drivers.

If it doesn't have any listed, go into Device Manager and expand Keyboard.

It may be listed as HID Keyboard Device.

Right click on it and select Properties then under the Details tab, use the dropdown and click on Hardware Ids.

There you will find a driver number highlighted.

Right click on it - select Copy then you can Paste it into the reply box where we can run a Google on it, or you could Google it yourself for a driver download, but don't fall for one of those driver updater programs - look for something resembling the vendor of your laptop.

7209
Ensure you have the latest version which is v3.8.1 and can be downloaded from www.tweaking.com

Run Windows Repair starting with Step 1 then use the button to boot up into Safe Mode and progress to Step 2 and so on.

In the actual repairs, it's item 19 but check the box at the top to select all repairs then start the repairs.

To post a screen shot - I usually use the Snipping tool - scroll down to the Attach: box then click on Browse.

Locate your pic in the Pictures library - click on it then Open and then you will see it in posted reply as mine displays.

Hi Bernard,

As in my response to your previous PM I had opened a thread for you to reply to.

However, I've copied and pasted your recent PM -

Thank you Boggin for your advice.  I followed the on-line instructions to-day which unfortunately made NO difference.

It started with a ‘Back up files’ box on the screen with a progress strip that immediately turned RED, and again the explanatory note:-  ‘A shadow copy could not be created for the following reason’ ‘catastrophic failure (Ox8000FFFF)’

Please ‘dig a bit deeper’.   I await your deliberations........................Bernard.

P.S.   'How do I send a screen shot with this ?

General Computer Support / Missing Reparse Point
« on: January 31, 2016, 05:11:54 am »
Thought I'd run the Pre-Scan out of curiosity, although I don't have any apparent problems and the scan came up with this one missing -

Original Path - C:\Users\dub_cm_auto\Application Data

Target Path - C:\Users\dub_cm_auto\AppData\Roaming

Ran the Pre-Scan twice in Safe Mode with Networking and having hit the Repair Reparse Points button each time, it stills snags it as a problem.

Any ideas ?

While you haven't said which version of Windows you are using, stop Windows Repair, run a cmd prompt as an administrator and enter chkdsk /f

When the machine reboots after completion, go into Event Viewer - expand Windows Logs - click on the name Application - Action - Find and type chkdsk or wininit into the Find box.

Cancel the Find box and read the report in the scrollable pane.

As well as seeing if it repaired anything, make a note if it finds any KBs in bad sectors.

If all is well then boot up into Safe Mode with Networking and run Windows Repair.

My Toshiba laptops now no longer supported are L450D-13X bought Aug 2010 and a C660D-1GD bought Dec 2011 - both Win 7 x64 Home Premium.

The only thing I wasn't happy about is Toshiba split the HDD down the middle and stick just 8 or 9GB in what becomes the Recovery partition.

I used a Win 7 install disk to remove and merge that partition with C: but have recovery media to factory reset with should I need it.

The 100mph winds are up in Scotland but it has been windy enough here in the North East of England and now we have below 0ºC overnight temps to look forward to and not much warmer during the day - but hey - it's winter :)

7215
You don't need a Win 8.1 install disk for either.

Windows Repair deals with the Registry and sfc /scannow replaces any files from the compressed dllcache already on the computer.

This article describes how to create Win 8.1 install bootable media should you want it - https://www.winhelp.us/non-destructive-reinstall-of-windows-8-and-8-1.html

The program is self explanatory - read what it says in Step 1 and after doing that, click on Step 2 and open the Pre-Scan then wait for it to finish.

If that finds anything to repair then use the relevant buttons.

If it finds corrupt Package files then post the log where Julian or Shane will upload them for you to copy into the respective folder, then click on each Step in progression, clicking the relevant buttons.

When it comes to the chkdsk, use the lower button for it to run on the next reboot as a chkdsk in read-only mode can give false errors and you would have to run the other one then anyway.

7217
If Port 80 is now stealthed, then I wouldn't bother with that.

It's interesting that there is now a firmware update for the router - perhaps that is in response to your query.

What is the error message ?

7218
Has Avast stopped reporting that Rom0 ?

7219
I hadn't suggested disabling SIP as it seems to be doing a good job.

I'm not one for using driver updater programs as they can download the wrong ones - it's best to go to the actual driver vendor support site, but if you start getting the APIPA address again then it would be worth looking for an update or just reinstall it - otherwise if they are working fine then there would be no need to update/reinstall.

I have Wireless and LAN drivers saved in my Downloads folder so if I feel either are getting buggy, then I'll uninstall them from Device Manager, checking the box to include software and then reinstall from the Downloads folder without rebooting to prevent Windows from sticking an older one in.

7220
That sounds okay for the SIP.

Have you updated your Network adapter drivers ?

7221
I've never come across SIP in a router before so I would have to Google that.

In Change advanced sharing settings I just have those at their default settings.

Are you still getting the 169. IP address ?

We are getting the backlash from the storms here in the UK with winds/gusts up to 100mph and while it has been blustery in the n.e. UK where I live, further north are getting the brunt of it with snow blizzards in some places.

I have two Toshiba laptops but they are only low spec and bought them more for the price than what they had and neither are worked hard.

Not sure why TurboTax doesn't work on a laptop given the min requirements and your machine sounds like a higher end one - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/system-requirements_thickbox.jsp

As for a new laptop, you could Google for a list of gaming laptops which should have a decent spec on them, but some aren't sold in all locales so a Google from your end will produce a more topical list.

Do the same for the printer and for both, Google for reviews on them and then Google for the item - Amazon where you can read the Customers reviews.

You'll also need to take the OS into consideration.

EDIT - I took out a 5 year extended warranty on both of those machines and have recently renewed the extended warranty on one of them with the other being due later this year.

Sometimes MS servers are busy and manually checking for Windows Updates later may produce some, but they may just come on their own when you are using the laptop, but I would never leave a laptop on without good reason - and waiting for updates isn't one of them.

The only times I've left my Win 7 laptops on overnight was once when I was running a scan with a Kaspersky Recovery Disk and after a factory reset when I leave it on overnight for it to download/install the updates after I've vetted them.

It may be worth trying again later.

Did the Pre-Scan find anything that needed repairing ?

7225
This article shows you how to set up a static IP address in the computer. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/19249/how-to-assign-a-static-ip-address-in-xp-vista-or-windows-7/

The example is for the LAN but the same steps apply to Wireless and you would enter your own Subnet Mask and IP address.

The example IP address in the article if applied to you could assign an IP address within the DHCP range and if DHCP assigned that address to another device then you would have a conflict and no Internet connection.

You will need to log into the router and check to see the DHCP range the router uses and then change it so it has a maximum as your range starts from 192.168.1.1 and then you can use one after the max.

e.g. - My own router uses 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.199 with the Default Gateway being .254

On that router I have set up a static IP address in the router for my printer at .200 which is outside of the range.

You can also set up a computer with a static IP address within/outside of the DHCP range in the router.

When you set it as an IP address within the DHCP range, it is classed as a Reserved IP address and DHCP will not assign that IP address to any other device, but this does not affect the ISP's external IP address.

This is how I do it in my Billion 7800N but your router will have similar settings and the MAC address is listed as the Physical Address in ipconfig /all.

Where the digits are separated by dashes in ipconfig /all you use : when entering the MAC address in the router.

http://www.billion.uk.com/esupport/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/268/14/how-do-i-configure-my-7800-series-router-to-assign-a-static-ip-to-a-computer-via-dhcp

If you have any problems then I suggest you take it to where that guy set it up for you, but a static IP address either set up in your router or in the computer should stop the DHCP problem where Windows is assigning that APIPA address - but if DHCP is continually failing to assign your computer with an IP address otherwise, then the router could be goosed or you need to update/reinstall your Network adapter drivers.

Don't use Device Manager to update your drivers as Windows usually only has older ones.

However, before setting up a static IP address, run a cmd prompt as an admin and enter -

netsh winsock reset catalog

netsh int ipv4 reset resetlog.txt

You could also add the ipconfig cmds of

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /renew

ipconfig /registerdns

shutdown /r /t 00

Reboot the computer a few times to see if it still connects or if you still end up with loss of connectivity and you have that 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address.
