Well, as you have an install disk, boot up with that - if you are presented with an inverse window with Windows Setup (EMS Enabled) - press enter and when you get to the splash screen select Repair your Computer to navigate to the Recovery Environment and select Command Prompt.

Enter bcdedit |find "osdevice" and using the partition letter that gives, enter (assuming C ) -

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows

exit (when complete to close the cmd window)

Remove the disk then Restart.

That's a Pipe symbol before find (uppercase of \ ) and there's a space before each forward slash.

I'm sure you can spare ~15 - 20mins for that.

It can relate to another program, so what else have you installed - or did it occur immediately after the install ?

What way is it affecting the computer and does Event Viewer or Reliability history have anything for it.

You could try a Repair install should the first one been a bad one.

Have you tried your restore points to prior the error and have you checked Event Viewer for time stamped Event IDs which could give the reason for the corruption.

Which version of Windows are you using and do you have either a System Repair or Install disk that you can boot up with ?

MS has a Hotfix that will install an updated Autochk.exe file which should sort that error.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/975778

If that fails to address the autochk.exe error then I think you will be looking at a factory reset after backing up your personal stuff and all that goes with reinstalling your programs and then the dreaded Windows Updates.

I normally set my laptop to turning off the display but to never switch off and then start the Windows Updates so that they are running overnight.

I think the last time I factory reset, including MS updates, they took about 9hrs to download and install on my ~6.5 meg sync speed.

If you have any Microsoft paid for programs like Office, there could be problems with reactivation and you may need to contact MS to have the product key reactivated, but for any other programs, Belarc Advisor will list those product keys should you have misplaced the original documentation.

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

To refresh my memory on the SURT installation I downloaded it again and having taken about 20mins to download the 538MB file, the Initialization went through pretty quickly but the actual Install bit does look as though it's hanging - in fact there isn't any movement on the progress bar as I write, so it may be a case of being patient with that.

While I've been writing this, just checked its progress to see the Installation Complete window, so not sure if the autochk.exe error may have some bearing on your prolonged installation - so trying it again after downloading the Hotfix for that and running another chkdsk /f to confirm, may produce different results for the SURT install.

Shane is in the process of testing an update to WR to keep abreast of the latest updates as well as checking to see if MS has resolved this.

When it is ready for release, whether they have or not may be included in the release notes.

General Computer Support / Re: How to edit pop-up menu in Firefox?

This article may help https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/firefox/customize/firefox-options-preferences-and-settings but entering about:config in the URL search box in Firefox will give you a page where you can change items to true or false, although I don't know which one you would need to change or if any of those will apply.

If you are still stuck then you may get better results from posting on the Firefox forum.

Create a System Repair Disk if you haven't already and boot up with that.

You will need to change the Boot order which you can usually do by tapping F12 as you switch on - use the cursor keys to highlight ODD (DVD player) - insert the disk and press enter.

Press any key when prompted to boot from CD/DVD - change or confirm the language using the dropdown and make a note of where it locates the OS to repair.

In the Recovery Environment select Command Prompt then enter -

bcdedit |find "osdevice"

(that's a Pipe symbol before find and is the upper case of \ - this cmd will confirm the partition letter as it isn't always C: )

Using the partition letter, enter chkdsk x: /f - where x is the partition letter.

This doesn't require a reboot to execute and its report will be displayed on screen.

Unfortunately, this method doesn't send its report to Event Viewer, so what you see will be its only record, but it will show if there are any KBs in bad sectors and what it was able to repair as required.

Enter exit to close the cmd window, remove the disk then hit Restart.

You can make a note and post if it finds anything untoward.

If it is successful in its repair, then try chkdsk /f in normal mode to see if it executes - you will know if it runs as you'll see it going through the 3 stages on screen.

Depending upon what it reports, run another sfc /scannow and if it still reports there are files it is unable to repair, download and run SFCFix.exe and you can post its report which will be smaller than the CBS log the sfc /scannow produces.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/sfcfix.html

Just to refresh your memory if required, right click in the text area - click on Select all - right click and select Copy then right click in the reply box and select Paste.

You can still view the CBS log by entering this cmd -

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This will put an icon onto the Desktop which when double clicked will open the log in Notepad with what it can and cannot repair.

You can also run the applicable System Update Readiness Tool - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/what-is-the-system-update-readiness-tool

This will produce a report in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS then double click on the Checksur one which will open in Notepad.

This one can be particularly helpful as it could ID what is causing the 80070005 error which is generally an Access Denied error.

If you enter the details into http://support.seagate.com/customer/en-US/warranty_validation.jsp that will check your warranty.

Glad to see you have gotten the permissions problem sorted.

I don't have a lot on either of my two Win 7 laptops and can get away with just using a Seagate 500GB external HDD for my system images, as the latest one overwrites the previous.

I did buy a Seagate 1TB external HDD to make system images when I ventured into Win 10 but as that didn't seem to sit very well on this laptop, other than doing a full NTFS format which took about 18hrs, it has gone unused.

Prior to buying anything substantial, I usually Google the item on Amazon and then read the Customer reviews, but WD usually has a good rep although I don't have any personal experience of them.

Is the G: an internal or external HDD ?

Are you running the latest version in Safe Mode with Networking as your antivirus program could be blocking.

I may be wrong but you are using Windows admin to save files to wherever, so I would have thought that was where the problem was with the Permissions.

Give WR a go and see how you get on, but I would back up that G: HDD before it goes altogether - did you download HD Sentinel to see what it gives for its expected life ?

Tweaking.com Support & Help / Re: File Permission problem with Windows 10

WR only runs within Windows which determines your permissions for the rest.

chkdsk /f only repairs files whereas a chkdsk /r would move data from the bad areas on a HDD when there are good areas left to move it to, but data can be lost.

As you have had some warning of G: failure then you should find another media to back up the data onto ASAP, but HDSentinal will give a written report on all of your drives.

Hit the green button on http://www.hdsentinel.com/

Not sure if it still has a 30 day free trial of if they have a freebie version now, but you can uninstall it when done then reinstall it from the Application in the Downloads folder as and when.

7366
It may not be your end but the servers from where you are downloading them from - especially if you are one of many downloading the same thing.

I can get buffering on BBC iPlayer even using the option of Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering in IE which can usually resolve problems on my end.

7367
The cursor is part of Windows but this article will give you a bit more info, but not sure to what end.....

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms648379(v=vs.85).aspx

7368
So is he going to fix it or do you think it may have been exacerbated by something on your computer ?

7369
The pointer will always be there but it needs a driver to move it.

When you get a black screen the pointer is much enlarged which can still be moved around but there's nothing for it to do.

7370
I'm not sure what you mean by that.

7371
This would appear to be an earlier version of what you have installed, but I don't know why you should have it installed on a Desktop PC.

If you are still in touch with the people who built your machine, I suggest you contact them for an answer.

What does Event Viewer have recorded for it ?

7373
I don't even have a PS/2 port on this laptop and I think they are just preinstalled as legacy drivers.

7374
The Synaptics driver may have been installed with the mouse the tech was using to set up your pc.

I have a pre-installed PS/2 compatible mouse driver installed, but have you ever used a mouse of that brand that plugged into the PS/2 port ?

It's difficult to know what the tech had used/installed, but this is what my Device Manager has -

7375
Been having a look around and the Synaptics device driver could be for your Touchpad.

I don't have it installed on my OEM Toshiba laptop as it uses something called Flash Cards for the Touchpad drivers.

I think I vaguely remember seeing it on my computer but can't remember where it came from and I think I uninstalled it - it certainly hasn't reappeared since a factory reset last June.

Some mice auto install it so it may have come from a different mouse I was using at the time.
