I updated the change log :-)

I have already looked into winpe and basically only a few of the repairs could be ran in it.

The reason why is a lot of the commands that are called, such as registering files, write to the registry and I have no way to tell it what registry, such as if I loaded up the offline registry.
Since I cant control that none of the repairs would touch the registry of Windows that it needs to.

The permissions repair could be changed to work in winpe, maybe. The unhide files could and repair recycle bin could, all because those dont need to work with the registry. All the others do, and so wont work.

Thanks for the heads up, just updated :-)

Well since it is just a recompile setting lets give it a try. Updated both manageacl exes to v1.4.0

The 32 bit one I actually set to no enhanced instruction set. Since SSE is suppose to be used to speed up float values I checked and I am not using any float values, so lets see how it does.

The 64bit version doesn't have that compile option and so isnt any different, I just dont know why the exe was bigger on the compile, perhaps because I updated visual studio and so some of the header files must have changed.

But since they are bigger and so something has changed I need to test to make sure they work like they should. I have xp in vmware I will test the 32 bit one on and compare the speed on the old comple to see if there is any change, good or bad. Then I will test in the 64 bit oses and make sure it still works like normal :-)

So here is how you will do this, grab the two new files I attached and put them in the files folder of the program replacing the ones already there.
Then in the main program folder open the file_list.txt file and remove the two entries in there for the two exes. That file list isnt to stop users from using modified files, it is only there because I have had some of the files end up on bad sectors and be corrupt or antiviruses remove them, and then the repairs get screwed up. So the program simply does a file check at start up to make sure they didnt get corrupted or missing.

Let me know if that fixes the crash for and if it does and my test shows the exes work like they should they will be in the next update :-)

I put it at the top of my to do list, not sure when I will have it done as I will have to build a new tool for it, but I have it at the top of the list :-)

Most users dont ever set mount points, it is the power users like yourself that do and who need more control over the automation of the repair. I will come up with some ideas when I make the new repair for it. I just dont have a time frame yet.

My computer repair business has been insanely busy and I am struggling to get caught up on all the programming

I dont have an old athlon to test on, so not sure what the best compile setting to use.

I wonder if /arch:SSE would do the trick and also if there would be any speed difference between them.

Shane

I dont have any of those set, but I checked and looks like sse2 is default
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/7t5yh4fd.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

/arch:SSE2

Enables the use of SSE2 instructions. This is the default instruction on x86 platforms if no /arch option is specified.

Which as of right now I have none set.

The repairs are ran in bat files. I only have so much control over the commands I am able to run. So in the bat file the cmd to search the drive for the mof files is ran, not a lot of options with it.

Perhaps I need to see about changing the repair to where the program itself first goes and searches for the files, that way I can have it skip symbolic links and then some. Then it can output the files to be add back the wmi in the bat file and not have the bat file do the file search.

One way I could tell that this works is if any of the file scanners in the program itself dont have any problem with searching the drives (They are set to skip junctions and symbolic links) the unhide hidden files repairs is one, the check rephrase points is another.

The program right now has to be able to contact my site to make sure the key is good, mainly because of hackers

I am working on the next update which i am hoping will be out tomorrow where once the program checks that the key is good it wont need to worry about it again for a few days. That way when you run it on a machine that isnt on the internet it will stay pro.

I am also having to deal with the cracks that they make for the program completely killing the repairs and then the systems. They keep cracking the vb6 runtime file itself to make it pro, but it screws everything else up. Then when the repairs are ran it screws up the system. Then because the corrupted repairs kill the system my program gets bad reviews and shot down. Who the crap cracks a run time file!

I am actually testing the new build right now and so far it is working like it should. By having the keys online and not a single line of code in the program for the keys it will keep them safe and also means I will be able to start making random key codes instead of being tied to a users email. So if a person buys 3 copies they get 3 different key codes instead of right now they only get the 1 key code.

I have had a lot of people abusing the hell out of my program and the license. So on the major v4 update that I get done hopefully in the next month or so I will be redoing the licensing on that. Looks like the honor system isnt working as much as I wished it did, shame.

« on: September 13, 2016, 09:11:47 am »
My program didnt do that to your system. Random reboots and black screen normally means you have a hardware problem. The program also did a registry backup which you can restore.

When you did the chkdsk on the drive did you do just the normal one or did you do the one to have it check for bad sectors?

The thing that happens if a person has bad sectors on their drive is when permissions are set or files are registered (writing to the registry) and pretty much everything the repairs touch make windows write to the drive, the registry is a database file and so you write anything to it and the drive is written to. So where nothing was on a bad sector after the repairs and all the new drive writes something can end up on a bad sector and then you see all hell break lose.

« on: September 07, 2016, 03:21:35 pm »
The program pulls what Windows tells it, which is normally determined by the printer driver itself. So if it is missing now it is possible it is the driver that is doing it. But the custom option should work as well :-)

I will have v2 of the envelope printer done soon (This week) as well.

Shane

My program didnt do that. The repair windows updates doesnt touch the user access control. It simply resets windows updates and thats it.

You restored the registry and you still have the problem, then that means the problem wasint in the registry or anything the program did as you restored the registry to before the repairs.

Have you checked your system for any infections? Try adwcleaner and malwarebytes anti rootkit.

From the looks of it it is Vipre. I did a google search on that file name and someone had uploaded it to virus totalback in Jan.
https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/c95dc32d5110f517f30e7a2a31a829ed1b6bd9768a3ffaea53eb22de9ef3c84d/analysis/

At the bottom you can see
" Setup-VPP-en-US-9.3.3.2.exe
InstallVIPRE.exe"

I have seen the checking for updates take HOURS. It is just Microsoft update. You have to give it time. Start it and have it check before you head to bed and see how it is in the morning.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I have also been up for over 48 hours getting updates done so you will have to forgive me if I seem a little off lol

Ok so you can work fine in safe mode, but not in normal mode. As soon as you more your mouse in normal mode you get and error and its done.

This isnt the mouse that is causing it. It can be a number of different things and so we just need to go down the list and we cross them off till we find it :-)

I am going to make a list of things to do and I will have boggin help you get through them as I am about to pass out on my key board :-)

1. Memory. If you have any bad sections of memory (Ram) and something hits it you will have this problem. In safe mode you may not notice it because very few things are running and so not a lot of memory being used. If the bad section of the memory is at the higher end you wont hit it till you boot up like normal. Also onboard video cards use the same memory and can cause problems that was as well.

So for this one, if you havent yet, I want you to do a memory test. The one MS use to have on their site is a good one. You can grab it here
http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/microsoft_windows_memory_diagnostic.html

I will have boggin walk you through that.

2. Hard drive. If you have any bad sectors and a system file or drive is on a bad sector and corrupted you will get this kind of problem as well. So do a chkdsk c: /r on the drive, this will check for bad sectors and will take a while! Once done you can find the results a few ways
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/96938-check-disk-chkdsk-read-event-viewer-log.html

Post the results we want to see 0 KB in Bad sectors at the end of it.

3. Drivers. This one is a lot less common, as in hardware drivers. BUT software drivers is another story. Such as drivers that cd buring software, antiviruses and a ton of others can install. Once of those going nuts can cause this.
Along with drivers is also Services and 3rd party programs. Could have something at startup that is doing it.

On this one it is a matter doing a clean boot, and not just with msconfig, people forget about the task scheduler :-) I have a page on how to do a proper clean boot
http://www.tweaking.com/articles/pages/performing_a_proper_windows_clean_boot_on_xpvista78,1.html

4. Infections. Boot into safe mode with networking. This way you will still be online. Run ADWCleaner and malwarebytes anti rootkit and even combofix. I will have boggin help with that.

But infections can do a lot of damage and the poorly coded ones can crash systems. So this is always a much anyways.

So with that we are covering the most common of the list. Hardware, software, infections and 3rdparty crap.

Lets see how that does and go from there :-)

Tweaking.com Support & Help / Re: Bug in Registry Backup v3.40

- I also noticed that sometimes the GUI of RB does not align/overlaps with the Windows window and then Windows shows part of its own window and displays the name "Tweaking .................. " in the header. See the red Arrow in the top of the picture I attached. Does some information get passed along to Windows quickly enough ?

That one I dont know. The window has a normal frame and boarder around it, I call a Windows api to remove it. This is the only way to keep the right click menu on in the task bar for it, because windows removes the right click for boarder less windows. So why the API is having trouble on yours I dont know, but I do know it is graphical so i want if video drivers might be playing a part.

Quote
I had RB v3.41 installed in a special folder outside the "Program Files (x86)" folder. When I (manually) start RB  then CPU usage goes up to 25% on a 4 core CPU (one core maxed out). RB notices that the previous backup attempt failed and RB displayed the message "Backup failed. Would you like to use the "Fallback method" instead ?". When this message pops up then CPU of RB drops to zero. As soon as I make a choice CPU went back up to 25%. CPU drops back to zero only when the helper program(s) "vss ................... " starts running.

When you first open the program it will go as fast as the cpu can do on the one core, it is loading all the controls, graphics and then loading the treeview and all that. When the startup of it is done then it would pop up that message box. And while a message box is open the program cant do anything since it is single threaded. Then when you tell it to do the fallback method it is going to work on the backup, of course it is going to go as fast as it can.

It is calling the windows api to save the registry to new files, it it coping them, grabbing their file size, getting their permissions and so on.
When it comes to using the VSS method the cpu isnt doing anything because the program is waiting for the shadow copy to be ready. Then it kicks in.

You shouldn't worry about the cpu usage, I want the program going as fast as it can. Now if the cpu was maxed out and the program was frozen, then that would be a problem.

Quote
- Sometimes I am able to make a copy of the registry using RB. But then regularly RB crashes after that copy has been made and before the RB GUI closes.
Yeap and you will see the backup did create. This has been a bug for a while now and I already figured out what it is with another user. The program is opening and closing so fast that all the graphics and such are not done drawing. Then the program goes and closes itself before the graphics where done and bomb we have a crash.

I had a hard time replicating it on my system, I did put in code to slow down the auto backups to give the graphics time to catch up. This is also why it never crashes when ran normally.

Problem is I have been able able to trace where the crash is coming from. I also have a very powerful gaming computer I work on and have a very good graphics card. So the graphics draw fast, I think thats why I cant replicate it. I also noticed it happens more when it is ran at startup from the system account.

Installing one of the programs and you get a Sharing Violation Error? :omg:

A sharing violation error means the installer was trying to access the file but it was locked out of it. This almost 99% of the time because of your Antivirus.

Your antivirus could be in the middle of scanning the file and hasn't unlocked it yet, or it could be flagging it as a "GEN" which stands for generic is always a false positive.
That ever happens just send the file to your AV company and they will remove the false positive.

As for the sharing violation you just need to disable your antivirus while you install the programs. This is why almost every installer and setup program out there always says to please disable your antivirus, because it can and will get in the way.

-Shane

45
Sharing violation means the setup was trying to write or access the file but it was completely locked out of it. This is always because of the Antivirus. Normally it is in the middle of still scanning it or it hasnt decided what to do with it.

So just disable the AV and try again.

In fact I think I will make a sticky thread about this for other users will see it :-)

What file is it complaining about? If it is the "romanticprediction.php" file that is ok, it is from the project honeypot and is used to catch spam bots :-)

What does the progress show in the cmd.exe window?

If you havent yet do a chkdsk c: /f on the drive and then try it again. The file permissions can go real slow if there is a problem with the file system, chkdsk will fix anything it finds.

I will be updating reg backup in windows repair on Monday. I will also be putting out RB 3.4.1 to fix a small color bug on the successful text and it being the same as the back color and so not showing up :-)

The new version doesn't use some of the older files, so if you install over the old those old files will be there but other than that you can install over it just fine :-)

You will see in the files folder of the program it uses the vshadow exes from MS to make the shadow copies :-) (They are just renamed since there are different ones)
