Hi Shane,

I just downloaded the Tweaking.com - Registry Backup v1.10.1 (Portable). All is good, it seems a bit faster even when using VSS

Nice work.

Everything Else / Thermal Grease
« on: October 10, 2014, 10:41:08 am »
I have just been given an old DELL desktop. I have done a factory reset, updated the BIOS, drivers and Windows updates. All seems fine, it's not the greatest machine, but I'll make use of it

However it was probably the worst machine I've ever seen internally, spiders' webs and a warren of dust bunnies
I have carefully cleaned it out, had to remove the fan and heatsink, and now need to refit them. Does this thermal grease look OK? Or does anyone have any recommendations. I can get exactly the same product as shown below at Newegg for £3 in Maplins in the UK, or will I gain anything from spending a bit more? The reviews on Newegg seem pretty good. Thanks.

Hi Shane,

Tweaking.com - Registry Backup v1.10.0 (Portable version) does n't seem to extract all files to it's own named folder like previous versions did. Not a real biggie, but I thought you'd want to know. The program itself runs just fine

Hi Shane,

You've really nailed it with the colour choices again

I have just downloaded and run Tweaking.com - Hardware Identify v1.2.0, no problems, but I was a bit surprised to see that all my hardware was uploaded to the database. I had run V1.0 back on the 28th March, uploading to the database. I thought it would have included all my hardware from then by now? Is there a longer time delay for updates to be included in the database than I am thinking? Or have you started the database over again?

Great job with this version, the colour choices really help, much better contrast and readability.

Thank you, Samson.

Everything Else / .NET Framework
« on: February 11, 2014, 11:27:08 am »
Hi Shane,

Today's "Patch Tuesday" included 3 security updates for .NET Framework in XP. After April 8th am I right in thinking that MS will no longer offer .NET Framework updates for XP?

Two part question

Do I really need .NET Framework anyway? I know that 2 programs that I used to have installed needed it, but they are long gone now and so was wondering about uninstalling it altogether, your thoughts/ advice appreciated.

Thanks, Samson.

Everything Else / Will Tweaking.com continue to support XP?
« on: January 18, 2014, 11:58:30 am »
Hi Shane,

In light of Microsoft's recent announcement that they will continue to offer engine and defs updates for MSE for users on XP....

Will you still be supporting XP with your new and updated programs?

I have decided to stick with XP after April. I am an adult, I understand the risks and accept the possible consequences of doing so.

General Computer Support / svchost.exe 99% CPU Win XP SP3
« on: October 10, 2013, 04:31:39 am »
Hi Shane,

Problems with Win XP SP3, same problem on all 3 machines at our house following recent "Patch Tuesday". No updates were shown, downloaded or installed.

svchost.exe running at 99% CPU, tried your Repair Windows Updates tool, logs attached, the only way to have a usable machine at the moment is to set  wuauserv to disabled. It's a workaround, but obviously I'm not keeping these machines up to date with security fixes.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

General Computer Support / Static IP/ Reserved Address
« on: August 09, 2013, 01:43:05 pm »
Hi Shane,

I have set up a static IP address on my computer 192.168.0.200 (within the DHCP pool, but at the higher end, I read what you've said about this elsewhere ).

I have also set up a reserved IP address on my router 192.168.0.200 for the same machine.

It all seems to work just fine, but I wanted to check that this seems OK? Do I need both, or could this be problematic?

Thanks.

Everything Else / Budget tech

A topic open for your best budget tech deals.

Here's one to open up with. Today at a Car Boot Sale (I guess the equivalent in the USA would be a Yard Sale?) I picked up a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse along with a Cisco wireless network USB adapter, both new and sealed in the boxes for a total of £2 Happy days! You've gotta love a bargain   :cheesy:

Everything Else / Word Game?

Hi Shane,

I was wondering when your Word Game was coming out. But I've been over to the Tweaking.Com facebook page and see that you have more than enough to keep you busy, now and in the future

Best wishes to you and your growing family.

General Computer Support / Flow control?
« on: March 14, 2013, 12:46:24 pm »
Hi Shane,

Just a quickie

I was reading your tips for network adapters and enabling "Flow Control".
I have an Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection. Under "Flow Control" settings I have the following options:

Generate
Generate and Respond
Off
Respond

Which of these would you recommend, presumably not "off ", so which of the remaining options should I use?

Thanks, Samson.

Feedback & Suggestions / Registry Compressor
« on: March 01, 2013, 05:49:06 am »
Hi Shane,

Registry Compressor, another nice, simple to use tool that does the job  :cheesy:
Every little helps on older machines like mine, the aggregation of marginal
gains and all that

Thank you.

Feedback & Suggestions / Repair Hosts File
« on: February 26, 2013, 12:56:10 pm »
Hi Shane,

I decided to live without the MVPS hosts file. I use Avast, Firefox with Adblock Plus (EasyList and Malware Domains subscriptions), MBAM (free on demand), Norton ConnectSafe DNS and Sandboxie. So figured that MVPS Hosts was maybe a bit over the top, but was uncertain how to get rid of it and reset the hosts file back to default.

The obvious and simplest answer was right here, your "Repair Hosts File" tool did the job  :cheesy:

Thank you.

General Computer Support / Image or clone?
« on: November 30, 2012, 11:27:54 am »
Hi Shane,

Just got given a couple of HDDs, have installed one in each of my machines (see sig below), both as slave drives. Formatted both and they are healthy. As a backup would you recommend imaging the master drive or cloning it?

Feedback & Suggestions / Hats off to Shane
« on: November 09, 2012, 01:40:53 pm »
Hi Shane,

Not been on here for a while, so thought I'd drop by and say "Hi" and "Thanks again"....Both my old machines (one the kids use for schoolwork...the other I use) are running sweet thanks to your great software and helpful advice, long may they continue.

A friend of mine called over and used the guest account on my old celeron machine to check his emails, he was laughing at how old it was, but 10 minutes later he said it was snappier and nicer to use than his modern machine (probably full of bloatware ). So I sent him away with the links for Simple System Tweaker and CleanMem, so you've got another convert.

Enjoy your weekend,

Everything Else / DNS Cache
« on: September 19, 2012, 11:30:36 am »
Running Firefox in private browsing, with Windows XP DNS client service disabled, I have found that browsing and page load times are faster than with the DNS client service enabled. I use Norton connectsafe (DNS servers) set on my Netgear router (DG834G V4)

My question is why is this so? I thought that  DNS caching was supposed to speed up browsing, without constant look ups. Does my router cache DNS look ups? Or is my browsing quicker with the DNS client disabled because I am using a slow, old machine (1.2GHz Celeron, with 512MB (100MHz) RAM, and Norton DNS is just quicker than my machine is at reading it's cache?

It's not a problem, quite the opposite really as I've got a faster response time, but a bit puzzling nonetheless....Or am I missing something really obvious here?

General Computer Support / Graphics card question
« on: August 26, 2012, 04:50:28 am »
I am updating an old Dell Dimension 4600i, as cheaply as possible (for free basically!). So far I have upped the RAM to 2GB added a Sony DVD writer and have been given an ATI Radeon 9250 128MB AGP graphics card. OK here's my Question....

The FSB on the Dell is 533Mhz and so my pc3200 DDR400 RAM underclocks to 333Mhz, the ATI card is DDR400 so will this underclock automatically to 333Mhz too, or should I use something like the ATITool to do this?

Also I'm unsure as to what would be the best AGP aperture to set in the BIOS, I have plenty of RAM so would the max of 256MB be better than the deafault 128MB.

Thanks.

Tweaking.com Support & Help / ERUNT vs Tweaking.com Registry Backup
« on: July 21, 2012, 12:44:04 pm »
Hi Shane,

Sorry for bothering you on the weekend  :shy:

I use the Simple System Tweaker, and have a backup of my registry using ERUNT, is this OK do you think? Or should I have used Tweaking.com Registry Backup? I am unsure...At least I have a backup  But in the Q & As for the Tweaking.com Registry Backup it seems to suggest that ERUNT is not the way to go, although it is the default method in Simple System Tweaker.

I hope this makes sense, am I worrying unnecessarily? Thanks again for all your good work.

Feedback & Suggestions / Simple System Tweaker
« on: May 16, 2012, 12:32:31 pm »
Hi Shane,

Just another quick thanks. I recently got given an old desktop that was destined for a skip (AKA dumpster)...so I recycled it, added a bit more RAM (which was kindly donated to me), did a fresh OS install (XP Home) and of course installed and ran Simple System Tweaker, along with CleanMem

Now I've got, what to me, is a fast "new " machine....Intel P4 2.8GHz with 1.5GB RAM, not much by modern standards, but an upgrade from my signature machine (see below), which still runs great considering its specs  :cheesy:

Thanks again, maybe when I'm feeling braver I'll try the Advanced System Tweaker.
