Feedback & Suggestions / Re: Improvement for program code of WR

- Or run "unlodctr.exe" first and then "lodcrt.exe"
- "lodctr" has a relationship with WMI.

Feedback & Suggestions / Improvement for program code of WR
« on: September 29, 2022, 04:56:55 am »
- I have had some problem with the "perfromance counters". I did some GOOGLEing and found the following article that describes how to fix those performance counters (better). WR already has a repair called "Repair Performance Counters" but this repair can be improved.

https://leansentry.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038645792-How-to-Fix-performance-counter-issues

and

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-US/troubleshoot/windows-server/performance/manually-rebuild-performance-counters

Turns out that "lodctr.exe" is present in both "system32" and "syswow64" (on my Win 7 system).

Perhaps in order to repair the performance counters WR also needs to run "unlodctr"  ???

Please pass this on to Shane !!!!!!

(Perhaps later more info ............ )

- I must add some additional info. It looks like that I downloaded that version of WR and it was downloaded to that folder:

      c:\users\<----- username ------>\downloads\"  folder.

It seems the file was opened in / from that folder and then installed to "C\program files\................. ". But that one file mentioned above was placed in the subfolder "_windows_repair_log" that was created when I ran WR. Seems that one systemvariable inside WR still pointed to the wrong folder (" ........\downloads\" (see above).

- Does it matter that I have a dutch Windows 7 system ? Because when WR tries to repair the "Reparse Points" then it always fails to do so. I blame that on having a dutch (!!!!) windows 7 system.

- I ran WR v4.12.3 (yes, I know. This is not the latest version. v4.13.0 is the latest available version) and noticed that WR puts the file "_Windows_Repair_log.txt" in the folder "C:\users\<- username ->\downloads" on my Windows 7 system.

I thought this file would be placed in a subfolder of the "c:\program files......\" folder.

Perhaps this bug is also present in the latest version of WR ????

General Computer Support / Re: System Restore or Registry Backup Restore?
« on: February 06, 2022, 10:40:15 am »
- "Registry Backup" (as the name implies) only backs up the registry and nothing else. Where as System Restore also backup system files (if they are moved for the one or other reason). If you change any of the settings then some 90% (95% ???) are stored in the registry.

There is another problem with WR, this time with the repair "Repair Internet Explorer". Everytime I run this repair, one error keeps popping up multiple times:

"The switch /D is only valid together with the switch /S"

The only command I could find in the program code for this repair, with this /D switch is the command "ATTRIB .............. ". So, it seems that this MSDOS command also needs a /S switch to be able to execute that command without causing an error.

To be fixed in the next version of WR !!!!

- No, I mean only the system tray icons. Like the system tray icon for WR that sits in the system tray.
- Yes, I can restore the registry using Tweaking's Registry Backup to restore the proper working of the system tray icon. But that doesn't eliminate that running WR "breaks" the ability to change settings for individual icons on my Win 7 system.

Yes & No. Because this behaviour of the system tray icon changed after I ran WR.

- No, repair #12 only deletes the icon cache, whereas repair # 10 repairs a number of policies, repairs a number of settings in the registry.

- I ran the repairs to see if the program code had changed.
- I went through the repair logs and they showed that I ran repairs 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14 & 18 (in several combinations) but NOT in Safe Mode. So, it seems that one of those repairs breaks these system tray settings.
- And this could be either "policy" issue (repair #12) or a permission issue (repairs #1, 2, 3 ,4). The error mentioned in post#1 of this thread could be related to this "system tray" problem. I.e. due to a permission problem the user could be unable to change those system tray settings.

I have another problem since I ran the last version of WR (v4.12.3).

I can change the behaviour of the system tray icons on my Win 7 system. I want to let Windows always show a few selected icons and always hide a few other icons. But after a restart the behaviour of those icons has been changed to the default behaviour of those icons. I.e. only show the icon for a few seconds in the system tray. After those few seconds the icon disappears.

Does the repair "Remove policies set by infections" cause this change in behaviour of the system tray icon ? Or is there another repair that resets the behaviour of the system tray icons ? Is this a "permissions" issue ? Either in the registry or for folders and/or files ?

Or is there another thing in WR that "interferes" with the working of the system tray icon ?

- I suspect that this file ("profile.7z") is supposed to set the permissions for the root of the folder called "C:\users\....... ". Is this correct ?
- I ran WR because I have trouble changing some settings in Win 7 and I assumed that this was a matter of permissions of files in the "C:\users\..... " folder.

Tweaking.com Support & Help / WR v4.12.3
« on: January 31, 2022, 03:55:32 pm »
- I ran WR version v4.12.3 last evening. I noticed that in the log file there were 2 lines that read:

Decompressing & Updating Windows Permission File c:\Program Files (x86)\PcWinTech\WR v4.12.3\files\permissions\7\profile.7z
Failed to decompress the file!

I also attached the logfile to this post (zipped up in a *.7z file).

This file ("profile.7z") was only (less than ??) 1 kb in size. Is this correct ?? I tried to decompress this file with 7zip (installed on my Win 7 system) and that also failed. Is this correct ?? Are there more files that WR / 7zip fails to decompress ?? I didn't see this error pop up in the logfile for other *.7z files. So, it seems that a file with this small size causes this error. Or is this an error in 7zip ?

To be fixed in the next version of WR ?

- Don't worry whether WR does or doesn't support any 64 bit system because the program code is (already) clever enough to find out if the program is run on a 32 or a 64 bit system. Only a 64 bit system has a folder called "C:\Windows\syswow64\.....". If that folder ("syswow64") is present then WR will act appropriately. And this is independent from the type of Operating System (XP, Vista, Win 7, ........ ). Yes, I know there are/were also 64 bit XP (!!!) systems around. I have seen one example of that here on the forum in the past.

- There is another problem. I received a notification of your reply but your reply was placed in the "Spam folder" of my email account by my ISP. And it was marked "[DKIM]" that seems (!!!!) to signal that the sender of that notification has a "DKIM" error/problem (?????). Perhaps Shane can look into that as well ?

1)  WR v4.12.2 is available but MAJOR GEEKS still offers WR v4.12.1
2) I assume that WR still runs on a Vista & XP system ? But MAJOR GEEKS says that WR can only be run on a Win 7 system and newer ...........

@Metaguy;

Can you give more information about what you did to solve the problem ?

"file-list.txt" (see above) contains the checksums of almost all files (except e.g. for "file-list.txt") that are needed for the WR program. With the content of this file WR checks whether or not a file 1) is missing or/and 2) has been corrupted (e.g. during installation of WR).

Aren't you able to exclude these 3 files from Bitdefender ?

@Metaguy:

You wrote in your 1st post:

"I neither use nor want Chrome on my system. Period.  Couldn't find an uninstall.  I've taken steps to remove anything with Chrome through search."

Does this mean that you installed Windows Repair (WR) and then removed those 3 Chrome related *.dat files ? If so, no wonder you get those errors.

Those 3 files are only used when you want to run the "Enhanced Windows Disk Cleanup" tool in Windows Repair. With this tool you can add or delete rules (incliding these 3 rules) to the program called "Cleanmgr.exe", the disk clean up tool that comes with Windows itself.

Solution:
- Re-install WR.
- Open the file "file-list.txt" and remove the 3 lines that start with

"CleanMgrScripts\Google Chrome Cache 1 (For Each User Profile).dat"
"CleanMgrScripts\Google Chrome Cache 2 (For Each User Profile).dat"
"CleanMgrScripts\Google Chrome Cache 3 (For Each User Profile).dat"

- Save the file. Ready.
- Then these 3 errors shouldn't show up anymore.

Let us know whether or not this has helped.

Feedback & Suggestions / Code improvement for WR
« on: November 18, 2021, 07:42:22 pm »
I have a proposal to "Clean up" the program code in Windows Repair (WR). WR runs a number of MSDOS command in several repairs and those commands can "cleaned up". Inside WR one can find a sequence of commands something like this (in bold & italics):

REM register an number of files in the "System32" folder:

regsvr32.exe   file.dll /s
regsvr32.exe   file2.dll /s
regsvr32.exe   file3.dll /s

REM test if a computer is a 32 bit or 64 bit system

IF NOT EXIST "C:\windows\syswow64\regsvr32.exe  goto nextcode

REM register a files number of files in the "Syswow64" folder
REM target the "Syswow64" folder.

regsvr32.exe  file.dll /s
regsvr32.exe  file2.dll /s
regsvr32.exe  file3.dll /s

.nextcode

This piece of code contains a "goto" command and that's NOT recommended.

The lines that target the "Syswow64" folder can be improved/cleaned up. Those lines in WR can replace that with slightly different code that also would target the "Syswow64" folder. Instead of using "goto" WR can use a slightly different "IF" code and NO "goto".

Then the lines that target the "syswow64" folder (see the example above) would become something like this (in bold italics):

REM test if a computer is a 32 bit or 64 bit system

IF EXIST "C:\windows\syswow64\regsvr32.exe  (

REM register a files number of files in the "Syswow64" folder
regsvr32.exe  file.dll /s
regsvr32.exe  file2.dll /s
regsvr32.exe  file3.dll /s
)

- I didn't do a "repair install". I don't know what the proper name is for what I did.
- Yes, I do have a license key. And I prefer that above the Win 10 system. But with Windows 11 coming, I am NOT in a hurry to switch to Windows 10.
- Deleting the folder: I have a program that can change the attributes.

- It was even worse. Something happened on my Win 7 system and I had re-install Win 7 from scratch. Win 7 has a very good system where one can re-install a new version of Win 7 and keep the old setup in the subfolder c:\Windows.old.
- On top of that I have a copy of all the Win 7 updates & patches stored on a USB external drive.

- Back to Registry Backup: it seems that something in my previous setup/installation caused RB to crash and the delays of the RB GUI appearing. Because with a fresh Win 7 installation RB showed up within seconds. I.ll just add one program at a time and see what program causes this delay & crash.

- Total CPU of all programs was at ~ 6% (Performance tab in Task Manager(TM)). That went up to about 40 to 50% when RB was busy starting.
- CPU in the "Process" tab in TM went up to 25% for RB.
- It seems this could still be graphics issue because when I run RB under the system account (automatically) then these seems to be no problem.

- After a "Clean boot" RB opened without hesitation. So, one of the other programs "has a row" with RB.

- I tried WR + RB in Safe Mode but there a number of buttons in RB don't work. Or only seem to work with a LONG LONG delay. Used the Fall Back method because VSS doesn't (seem) to work in Safe Mode. And yes, the Fall Back method worked to make a copy.

- But the Fall Back copy doesn't include/copy a number of files that are copied when using VSS.

- Safe Mode = Clean boot ??? Or do I have to use MSConfig to configure Windows to get ? I actually VERY rarely use Safe Mode or MS Config because I have rarely problems with my Windows 7 system.

- I'll try MS Config with only the MS stuff. To be continued ...........................
