(SOLVED)Windows update updates not installing
« on: August 04, 2015, 05:11:59 pm »
Unfortunately, my computer is having issues installing 2 windows updates, they are KB3065987 and KB3035583. When I try to install them, the install fails and produces an error message, a different one for each. The errors are 8007371B and 80004005, but I do not know which update had which error. I ran all the repairs in Windows Repair in Safe Mode, I used the official Windows Update troubleshooter and a Windows Update hotfix from Microsoft and none of them work. Help? I am on 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium.

HI, try windows update readiness tool.  The link is here, just download and install . While installing wait for it to complete. Once completed , go to c: windows\logs folder. click checksur.log. If everything is shown as nil pending, then your problem will be solved.
This is the minimum requirements for it to work
Windows 7 Service Pack 1
Hope that you have service pack 1

The Bottom line is "Check your hardware first if it supports the task you try".

Yes I do have SP1,  but I already ran this. I can try again when I have a free moment, but I do not think it will help any.

Just did that yesterday :/ It found files it couldn't fix, and someone on this forum helped me fix them. Think I should run a SFC again to be sure? And then if it is sure, should I rerun windows repair (in safemode) with all the repairs plus prescan, and try the windows update trouble shooter again and hope for the best? Because I do really want to update. And plus I have nothing better to do anyway for now.

I was reading your other post on the forum looks like boggin was the one who replied to you and asked for what the sfc scan results were. usually when reading that log you can see what it is that it's trying to fix but can't. okay so what i'm curious is have you done a chkdsk /f /r and reboot the computer then in the event viewer you should be able to find the scan results ill post a picture of the location in event viewer. what we want to make sure is no kb greater that 0 in the bad sector of your hdd.

KB3035583 is windows 10 update app so you can get windows 10 and KB3065987 is an update for the windows update itself lol were you planning on upgrading to windows 10?

Well I'm considering it, but I want to see a compatibility report first at least. It's annoying though because the windows 10 icon isn't there, even though I have a compatible OS, and I'm kinda hoping this update will fix that. And I will do a chkdsk scan, just as soon as the SFC is done.

AArgh I ran the SFC and it said that files were corrupted again! The Windows Update must be corrupting them when it fails to install. I reran the repair from the other forum, and am rerunning the SFC. I sure hope this works now.

Can you try installing those two updates again but separately and in the order they are presented and then make a note of the error code for each.

With Win 10 associated updates, a specific error code could be peculiar to each and that will make looking for a solution much easier.

You should see the amount of error codes people are getting when trying to install Win 10

OK, I will do that. Also, I ran the Windows Update Diagnostic, and it said I have error 0x8007371B(2015-08-05-T-04_31_02P)

I do not know much about error messages, but the first part I think was one of the errors Windows Update gave me. As soon as I try to reinstall the updates separately, I will supply you the codes for the updates.
UPDATE: The update KB3035583 gave me error 80070002. Now investigating the next one.

Work your way through http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/windows-update-error-80070002#1TC=windows-7 for the 80070002 error and the 80246007 seems to relate to the BITS service.

Have a look at this article to check if it's started.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/windows-update-error-80246007#1TC=windows-7

Let us know if it refuses to start.

Sigh It's never simple, is it? KB3035583 now gives me error 8007371B instead of the other one.

These cmds run from an elevated cmd prompt are a general WU fix, depending upon the cause but they do cover 80246007.

Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

Enter exit to close the cmd window, reboot then retry the WUs.

If you can copy & paste them to the cmd prompt they will auto run.

Now KB3035583 failed with the code 8007371B. Oh, and jraju, I do know I ran the system update readiness tool, but I cannot find the log, or the program so I am redownloading and rerunning it. I will post the log asap.

Yeah I googled it, but it wasn't in there. I am reinstalling the hotfix for sur, and the folder is there now, but no useful information in it yet because it hasn't finished.

Ugh. The installation finished, no errors detected. That means it probably didn't fix my problems. Reinstalling updates just to be safe.
