Router Wireless Slow Speed
« on: October 20, 2015, 02:50:20 pm »
I bought this new tenda wirelees N300 home router, model f300 and i have to say the speed is really slow, devices connected to it drop from time to time and lag is on a daily basis.I use the router at my student hostel and for certain there are other routers working on the same storey, about 20 or more.We have only 3 devices connected to our router but we use it only for online videos and gaming.OS differs on each device:Windows XP,Windows 7 and Windows 10.

Have to mention  i have the same router home and hardly ever had lagspikes(owing to router) or drops.I know i can tweak around and give up wireless for wired connection as it is way faster but i want to know how could i possibly improve wireless router connetion.Below ill post some images to get an better preview of the problem:

11Mbps shared between 3 computers streaming video and gaming will pull the speed down.

With just the Win 7 machine on, what is the download speed like www.speedtest.net

Let's see if changing channels as well will improve on the disconnects and lag.

Open a cmd prompt as an admin by going Start - type cmd then right click on cmd and select Run as administrator - accept the UAC then enter

netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid

To copy & paste the output of the cmd window, right click in the text area then click on Select all then press enter.

Right click in the reply box and select Paste.

The 3rd link under your System Tools - is that when you are wired to a separate modem ?

The following command was not found: wlan show networks mode=bssid. ... .And about the 3rd link at System Tools menu,no,its when i am connected to the Wireless Router, without an wire.

Did you put netsh in front of that cmd ?

The 3rd item has a Default Gateway of 10.0.0.1 which is usually when you are wired to a separate modem and getting the ISP's.

You will note that the router's Default Gateway is 192.168.0.1 which is DHCP generated.

You will note that the 10.0.0.1 is showing a different Subnet Mask to your ipconfig /all from the router.

What were you connected to get that screen shot ?

I swear on all gods that i wasn't connected at all through any wired cable when i took  that pictures and i was connected wirelessly to my router. And by gateway 192.168.0.1,its the router addres i need to type in the browser addres bar to acces its interface. Why 10.0.0.1,I believe it is so because de protocol the router uses its PPoE(requiring a username and password). My router uses that registration forms to give internet acces through the WAN cable it is connected to and broadcast that signal within its vicinity so that I can connect to it and get not only local acces(LAN) but also Internet Acces(WAN).

Alright then.

Try the netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid cmd again without any typos and post the output.

In XP you auto have admin privileges for the cmd prompt, but not being able to get into Safe Mode is another problem.

Download inSSIDer3 then which will give you the same info.

http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html

When it is loaded, click on the Networks tab and that will show your SSID and all of the other local users.

Your signal strength should be about -50 but if you are on or adjacent to any other users with similar strengths then you will need to change channels to at least two away from the strongest as they will interfere with your signal to give you lag and disconnects in some circumstances.

If you need to co-share any channel then choose one where the other signal is in the 70s or preferably 80s.

I'm going to have to shoot off now as it's getting on for 02:00am here in the UK.

This is a problem where a router has a wireless auto channel setting when you are in a densely populated area of other local users.

The router can drop you onto a channel with a similar signal strength to you which can cause lag and a disconnect.

Also when the router auto changes channel, that will momentarily disrupt the signal.

This wouldn't normally be a problem if you were just browsing, but where you need a constant connection for streaming video or gaming, it will be very noticeable even if you weren't in a densely populated area.

I don't know how often you can get home from the student hostel, but bringing your own in to compare could determine if that one is defective in some way - but as this router is new, I would advise you to change it for something else where you have more control over its settings.

Did you download inSSIDer3 to see how populated the channels were ?

Have you been able to boot up into Safe Mode okay before ?

I believe i should switch on wired connection on my hostel because having 20 routers functioning silmutaneously on the same storey is definetly a gonna create a performance issue.I tried on my hostel a wired connection(wired the router to internet(WAN port),and my laptop to the router(LAN1 port)).

So i tested Cabled vs Wired Conncetion on my room on a game called Curvefever

Guess what happened. From my perspective i didn't lag at all, everything worked fine and smootly within lobby and during game.Everything ran smoothly and no delays.

My collegue on the other hand had a lot of problems. He was experiencing lag problems within the lobby(the game notifies when you have lag or slow connection),he saw all other players moving very laggy and abruptly

So i guess it is the problem with signal,I wonder if i can decrease the wifi broadcast are signal only to my room to reduce the interference as much as i possibly can.YOu know, wireless its supposed to be wireless :)

There's really only two ways of combatting interference from other users and one is that you've found out by wiring up, the other is to change channels.

The wireless signal strength you are getting from the router is just between the computers connected to your router's SSID - you could in fact be causing interference to other users because of the channel it is broadcasting on, as it isn't a one way street.

While it isn't always convenient, your friend could wire up as well as most routers have a min of two LAN ports and you can use an Ethernet cable up to 100m.

I noticed that your home router is using channel 5 which may or not change but I would have been more interested in what inSSIDer3 reported from your student accommodation.

What about my question regarding booting up into Safe Mode ?

I'll be posting that during Monday. And about safe mode, attemping to boot on any other boot options apart from "Start Windows Normally"  would cause system failure, afterwards an instant shutdown/restart.This problem is regarding my current OS installation and i can't afford a reinstall for a couple of reasons.

I've seen this reported as a result of infection so try a scan with the free version of MBAM.

https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

Click on Settings/Detection and Protection and use the dropdown so that it treats PuPs and PuMs as malware as they may not be default set to that.

You could also see what a chkdsk /f has to report by entering that command at the command prompt.

You can view the log in Event Viewer. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_programs/seeing-chkdsk-results/3daaed53-2e88-4a46-a8ae-dfeb5a631105?auth=1

Avast Antivirus Premium
Kaspersky Pure
Mbam Pro
Advanced System Care Ultimate
Uniblue Powersuite
CC Cleaner
Junkware Removal Tool
Hitman Pro
RogueKiller
Windows Repair All in one by Tweaking.com

All this softwares reported a clean pc.Do I need post a fresh reports? Is off topic but anyway

How many times have you allowed ASC to clean the registry and Uniblue Powersuite is absolutely snake oil which can also knack a system.

In my naïve days I bought Uniblue Power suite and it destroyed files beyond repair - fortunately I had the foresight to create an external system image before running it and got my money back after complaining.

Did you run a chkdsk /f to see what it reported ?

While you can run Avast with most other AV programs, it's best to just use one.

Is Hitman Pro just a paid for anti-malware scanner or does it also have AV properties ?

Note that this is already off topic ... but ill will give you some details

First, all softwares mentioned are installed, used, and uninstalled so that my PC runs smothly
Secondly Chkdsk is corrupted, while in OS will report errors,if scheduled to start on boot up it says everything its fine.

Now about the slow wireless speed...

Curiously enough, this lag dosent seem to affect videos at my colleagues but mine would rarely be buffering. At online games they still all lag

I noticed that inSSIDer3 is showing your router to be broadcasting on channel 11.

The nearest one that could possibly cause you problems is Camera33 - what ever that one is.

I'd noticed in the wireless adapter Properties there was a 6 next to the Ad Hoc and 1 for your home router.

I haven't seen this before and was wondering if that value can be changed using the dropdown and if it can be compared to what inSSIDer3 says at the time.

Gaming lag can be caused by an incorrect MTU setting.

This tutorial will show you how to check if your 1460 setting is the correct one for you.

I'm not sure if you will be able to change that in the router if needed, but usually it's just a case of changing the value which may or not require the router to be rebooted to effect the change.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/94721-mtu-limit-test-change-your-connections-mtu-limit.html

To prevent buffering in videos, it sometimes helps to click on the Tools cog in IE - Internet options and under the Advanced tab check the top box which is for Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering - Apply - OK then reboot the computer.

Yes,the value can be changed with the dropdown menu. And about MTU settings i tryed to adjust the way you suggested with dr TCP.Its value is 1492 for my cable connection but detects 3 wireless connections having no MTU settings.Added to the insult,i tryed playing an offline game on my PC,and i lagged having a latency of 1,000,000(rounded value, the value is actually heigher). We will talk about this in an other topic.

For now,i doubt changing the ad-hoc will do anything as it doesn't change the router channel.

Ok.I kinda figured out whats the problem.Beeing so many wireless routers on my storey mean that chanells will be shared regardless what i do,this will gonna affect my signal strength.

The device, with Wireless Zero Configuration will always gonna search for a better connection and i believe all the computers on this storey have this windows service started, this affecting the connectivity of the internet, determining drops and lagspikes.

Lastly my own speed is affected by all devices using the same wireless device, therefore, bandwith is shared between all the devices.

The only solution to get max speed connection is a cross-over cable to router and mainly thats it.No lags, delays, drops or anything else.I keep both cable and wireless connection active. Its annoying but i do this for comparasion. What i deducted from this:

Wireless has many drops. But as long as i have the cable plugged,it may drop but wont disconnect me :))
Wireless is meant for small home/office use,not for streaming/gaming/ or anything that implies continous connection.Don't buy cheap wireless or gonna end up lagging. Here is the router i have.Avoid buying routers with same specifications if you want no lags/drops while gaming/streaming:

http://postimg.org/image/8auo32enr/

Thanks for all your help.I leave topic 1 day or 2 to see any new replies.Ill close it afterwards.Having other pc problems ill be posting on soon.

You could go into services, right click on WZC, select Properties then use the dropdown to change it to Disabled to see if that improves your wireless connectivity.

Why do you need a crossover cable when a straight Ethernet cable will do to connect you to the router ?

As that router is still newish you could see about returning it for something else.
