I'm not familiar with Irfanview but see if rebuilding the icon cache will do it, or by restoring the default file extension's associations.

I know it, I know these methods very well.!, But it does not work, I really did not work, still bad icons!
Windows 7 64-bit
After installation of IrfanView 64-bit (the latest version 4.40 64-bit)
something damaged in the system, changed or deleted from the register, and now I do not know how to restore the default icon after the installation of previous versions(4.38) because IrfanView 4.40 IrfanView has numerous bugs.

Using your restore points prior to updating may not work as the program may need to be reinstalled anyway.

Not sure if this link will give you v4.38 but you can try it - you may need to uninstall v4.40 first.

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/general/download_splash.cfm/irfanview?software_id=668&version_id=83791

Is there any way to report these bugs in v4.40 ?

I do not know how to fix the icon, I tried EVERYTHING! Nothing helps!
4.40 (a bug) but will be repaired until future versions of IrfanView, but I do not want to wait long for new versions!
I want to use version 4.38, but how to fix the icon, why there is no way to repair icons?

The icons may be restored after uninstalling v4.40 and replacing it wth4.38.

I wasn't aware that you had already reinstalled 4.38 but surprised that the icons haven't been restored with a fresh install.

As it would seem to be program specific, then perhaps you will have to wait until the bugs have been fixed.

All I can suggest is to use your restore points back to before the update.

When you choose a restore point, click on Scan for affected programs to see if it says certain programs may need to be reinstalled and if it lists Irfanview then try the 4.38 install again, but if the bug has become inherent then there won't be a lot you can do as it isn't a Windows problem.

restore point 22.11.2015 (last) so it does not help because this error occurs for a very, very long time.
I have tried various methods, no effective.
What free software can be changed or set an icon for jpg, jpeg, png, bmp and others.

I would have thought that you should have more restore points than that.

Click on the box for Show more restore points to see if it gives any more.

If the bug is related to the program then no amount of fiddling is going to resolve, but in the rebuild icon link I'd posted, clicking on the hyperlink in there for restore default file extension's associations gives you several registry batch files for restoring those, but as usual, create your own restore point before making any changes to the registry.

Yes, but did not get an answer.

Please note that the system does not create a lot of restore points because it takes a lot of disk space (many, many gigabytes)
I do not need very old restore points that occupy the space on the disk 10-20 GB or more !

I hope you start making regular system images then to external media which would probably have gotten you out of this situation.

I create one following all of the monthly updates after first checking that the system hasn't been affected by any updates as creating them onto an external HHD, overwrites the previous image.

I do not know why, but after a while I always have to solve the problem when other ideas fail.  No need for any restore points, and other stupid scripts!Super-easy solution. My idea work. Smart ideas are born always in mind.

Alright then - how did you fix it ?

From the info you gave you were sure it was caused by the upgrade to v4.40.

It sounds like it wasnt a icon corruption but instead the default icon for that file type simply got changed.

One way I have fixed it before is to right click on one of the files, go to open with and then click choose default program, choose a different program and put a check to make it the default. Windows then changes the icons to match the program. Then I got back and do it again and put it back on the orig program and it switches it back again.

I have to do this a lot actually because I have customers who try opening the wrong file types in the wrong programs, I dont know how they manage it but they do lol

I'm talking about IrfanView, of course it works(show icon) with other programs ...
and now also I work with IrfanView 4.38 ... I use IrfanView 4.38 and do not intend to install version 4.40, which brings more harm than good.

UPDATE: 12.12.2015

I know which program is causing all the problems with icons.

NCH Software Debut => Installing an application icon causes DESTROY to multiple extensions. (Photos, archives, video etc.)
