I mean, things are exactly as they were after first restore: Windows Update says the Windows is up-to-date, but it isn't, last updates are from June 2015.

At least you now have a green check for updates.

You should still be getting updates until April 2017 and other than setting your update settings to auto and waiting for them to come through, I don't know what else to suggest.

You could try these cmds from an admin cmd prompt to see if a clean out would help gee them up.

The SoftwareDistribution cmd will remove your update history but have no effect on already installed updates and you can reverse those by reversing the ren cmds.

The forum may allow you to copy & paste these cmds to the cmd prompt to avoid any typos where they will auto run, although the last one may not execute until you press enter.

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

Then enter exit to close the cmd window.

Reboot and run the check for updates again.

Hi Boggin

I still did not run those commands; I had run some that seemed alike, before, and they did not produce any effect.
I tried to install some updates manually from Microsoft Download Center, then a box came out: Windows Update Auto Installer, and a progression bar showing a never ending movement... It seems that even trying it manually, Windows Update remains in charge... nothing was installed, except Microsoft Silverlight, for which my browser (I. E. 9) was saying it was not updated and was allowing to do so; so, now there is in Programms a new one installed, Microsoft Silverlight with today's date, but I had it already (not visible in Programms).
Other than this, it is the same situation...

Silverlight wouldn't have updated if you had the current version, but for that to update - that sounds promising.

MS servers for Vista seem to have a very low priority which could be why your check for updates returns you are up to date.

If they are going to come then I think they will on their own.

As long as you have your update settings to auto and given that the Checksur log was clean, I'd just forget about them and get on with your life.

As WR or the SURT as well as other WU fixes you have run - whatever the problem is, I think it's on MS's end.

If you already had Silverlight then an update would normally come through Windows Updates.

Have you checked update history ?

I remember, when everything was working properly, to receive updates for Microsoft Silverlight.

This time, when I responded to that message box in Internet Explorer 9 to update Silverlight, it seems to me that it was installed, not updated; as I already told, everytime I try to download an update from Microsoft Download Center, it does not work, because all I get is a box saying Windows Update Auto Installer acting like trying to download the selected update, but never ending to do it, that's why I think Windows Update is not leting to update out of its control.

Avast free is my anti-virus, and, yes, I had it disabled for a while ... anyway it had never been an obstacle to updating before...

If your Check for updates is still green and as neither SURT or the Windows trouble shooter appear to have found anything wrong with your system, unless Event Viewer has anything recorded, then I think your only obstacle to getting any newer updates is MS itself.

So do you actually have any updates by KB numbers that to can manually try to download ?

See if you can get this one to download and install https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=42642

If it fails then you should get an error code.

I downloaded that update, opened it, then a box popped out, and at the end said NET Framework 4.5.2 had been repaired, telling to restart the computer, which I did.
For the moment everything seems to be as before. What should I expect from this download?

I was wanting to see if it was capable of getting an update with or without producing an error.

Give this one for IE 9 a go - it was released Aug 2015 and at least should afford you some protection.

I tried; what's happening is that I have the already mentioned Windows Update Auto Installer box telling "looking for updates" for a long time. It seems that this will end as many times before: the box will stay indefinitely till I switch off the computer.

Did that IE update download and install okay ?

If it did then I still think that you are at the mercy of MS.

I would contact them and ask if they are still sending out updates for Vista.

It did not download or install; just kept the box I told about, "running" for 20 minutes, maybe, then I shut the computer down.

I have seen the checking for updates take HOURS. It is just Microsoft update. You have to give it time. Start it and have it check before you head to bed and see how it is in the morning.

As I said, It didn't instal that IE9 update, but it was dowloaded to my "downloads" folder. When I opened it, the Windows Update Auto Instaler popped out "looking for updates", and so it remained for about 20 minutes for ... nothing.

Today I have been working with the computer for about 6 hours, and, again, nothing...
I would try Shane's suggestion (leaving the computer on for one night); isn't there any danger doing so?
