rebuild the Icon database code;

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
cd /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
del IconCache.db /a
start explorer.exe

Please review the zip file on this page;

- Yes, rebuilding the Iconcaches (plural, there's more than one) is part of "Repair Icons". But the second link points a whole different Icon problem. And that's not included in that one repair. Don't know if it should be included as well.

- Ah. I see the problem. Has this been happening before with this same program ?
- I have seen that the properties of the link(s) generated, point to the wrong folder or file. Then the installation program simply puts a link on the desktop without checking whether or not the link points to the right folder/file. Because the name of the installation folder or the name of the executable has changed and they forgot to update the desktop link. If that's the case then open properties of that *.lnk file and see where that link points to. Then Windows won't be able to pull up and display the appropriate icon.
- I have seen this happen with link of Tweaking programs as well.
- There could be a simple solution. Open the folder where that program is located and manually create a shortcut to the program/file it is supposed to link to and place that shortcut on the desktop.

- This is why one needs to close as much programs as possible. Then the chance of incurrint installation errors shrinks as well.

A better idea is to examine why; as it turns out the registry key for office 2007 was pointing to a directory with no icons.

I do believable that copying those icons to the file folder worked Watson.

Reference Zip File Attached a fix-it here rather than re-install everything is highly more efficient...

I been around here for years in this hub and some others;

myself, I dont see the true benefit to repairing so many things without them being checked to be needed to repair, a side by side repair is the only method that makes sense, meaning user has a DIY interface to make repairs.

Additionally; this recent problem of me re-installing win7 and MSOffice which still did not fix that original icon problem shows us how vulnerable we are the viruses. programs outside of operating systems will in the future need to be run in sandbox environments.

thanks for trying

- If this weird behaviour only affects Office then it certainly could be a virus.
- Is all your other software up to date ? Especially JAVA & Flash player seem to have an ugly reputation for haveing "Security holes".

+1 For that Willy2.

I uninstalled JAVA a long time ago (I have no need for it) and Flash Player is only activated when needed, which is increasingly less and less nowadays. I'd add Adobe reader to that list too for vulnerabilities, let alone the fact that it is slow and bloated, Sumatra wins that one hands down.

- Or use Foxit Reader.

Yeah, that's a good call. I used Foxit for a while, but swtched to Sumatra, it is faster than Foxit, and like lightning compared to Adobe  :wink:
