To paraphrase The Smiths, how soon is now?
« on: December 26, 2017, 01:31:20 pm »
Windows Repair has been running for about a day and seems to be spending and inordinate amount of time at:
10 - Remove Policies Set By Infections
   Start (12/25/2017 8:51:50 PM)
Running Repair Under Current User Account
   Running Repair Under System Account

Is this unusual?

Yes it is unusual.

I would suggest stopping the program and running a Custom scan with the free version of MBAM because if you have an infection then WR won't be able to repair.

https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/

Click on Scan in the left pane then click on Custom Scan/Configure Scan and check the box for Rootkits and C:

This will be a lengthy and full scan.

When it has completed, try WR again - I assume you are running the program in Safe Mode with Networking ?

After I run Malwarebytes I am unable to do safe boot. It is unresponsive when I choose option 5.

Are you using Win 10 and pressing the F5 option ?

Have checked to see if the repair program will boot you into Safe Mode with Networking ?

Yes WIN10 and F5 and nothing happens. This concerns me. However yes, Repair does boot it to safe mode.

Did you try it again after rebooting out of Safe Mode ?

EDIT - Forgot to ask - did MBAM find anything ?

What I was asking was would the machine boot up into Safe Mode normally after using the program to get you there ?

So did WR complete ?

What I was wanting to know that having used the program to boot into Safe Mode, did you reboot back to normal mode to see if you could get into Safe Mode normally by pressing F5 ?

Probably time to do a repair install.

This won't affect your personal stuff or 3rd party installed programs but you will need Win 10 install media.

You can get that from this website but read the instructions as they differ depending upon whether you want to use a DVD or USB.

If using a DVD, it will save the ISO to your Docs folder.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

When done, open Windows Explorer and This PC - insert the media and double click on its drive.

If using a DVD that will normally start the process, whereas if you are using an USB, that will open its files where you would double click on setup Application.

There is a little user input but for the most part it will just get on with it.

So the media has a repair function or am I reinstalling WIN10?

You are repairing just the install which is done from within Windows, whereas a clean install is done by booting up with the install media which wipes everything.

If/when my Win 10 gets a bit chewy, that's what I do.

So I just double click the .exe and let it go rather than going through a boot?

That's correct - with Windows booted up, open Windows Explorer - This PC - insert the install media and double click on its drive.
