Whats up.... :(
« on: January 08, 2018, 06:21:55 pm »
I have been using WR 3.9 for a year... and has worked great, but in the last week with 4 win 10 machines I get a black screen after i re boot, with cursor???, and yes I run MB, and run WR in safe mode.  I have 3.9 Pro portable. did Win Repair change?, or is it win 10?? If this was one or two, but for the last 4!!  whats up??

Thanks for any help
Frank
Thanks,  Frank

I think it's Win 10 but think most of the repairs remain the same except as to the notes Shane adds for each release.

The UI is the main change from v3 but the v4 Pro version has more repair options.

Because of the changes made by MS, Shane has set the program not to do the app repairs where Win 10 is concerned.

I've had a member reporting the same black screen after the reboot in a PM to me, but he had the busy circle spinning.

I've asked him to open a new thread in this section.

Have you done a power shut down to see what it's like on the reboot ?

However, if you have a Win 10 install disk or USB can you press and hold F2 as you switch the machine on to see if that gets you into the BIOS so that you can change the boot order to boot up with the install media.

If you don't have Win 10 install media, you can create it at https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

Read the instructions as the procedure differs for DVD and USB.

I've found that you may need to turn off fast start up to boot from a DVD and if using an UEFI BIOS then you will need to disable Secure Boot.

If you are able to get into the BIOS and the machine will boot from the install media, then click on Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - and select System Restore to see if the restore points will get you back in.

I may be able to use your experience to help the other member if he comes back.

I'll pass on your complaint as well as this is no longer an isolated event.

BTW - It may be a senior moment on my part but what is MB ?

Tom:

"MB" might equal Malwarebytes ?

Have a great day.

Thanks, I was wondering if it may be that.

..  Sorry, MB= Malware Bytes.

I tried everything to get in the system, and SM will not activate... I had to do a re-install. In the mean time I have stopped using WR until I hear back.

FYI, I have a Tech shop here in Illinois, and we work on 30 machines a week.

Thanks for all your help, I'l be waiting.

The repairs form 3.0 to 4.0 are essentially the same. The difference is in the pro features.  Did you run any of those? Or any of the tweaks after the fact?

So when you clicked on Repair your computer on the Install screen, it didn't give you the advanced options ?

I've had a couple of black screens in the past when I've power shut down when a restore point has hung and found that booting with a Kaspersky Rescue Disk got me back in.

The first time it initiated a chkdsk /f after its scan and the second, the machine booted up normally after the scan.

Not sure if that would have worked for you in this instance though, but something to keep in mind.

Ok, so I haven't used WR in a few weeks on win 10 machines... today I thought I'd give it another shot.... SAME thing, reboot, and goes to black screen with cursor.

I havn't heard back on how or why this is happening... I run a business...  I have clients, that expect to be taken care of, we fix 40 plus windows machines a week.

your product worked good for a year, NOW it just bricks systems... very sad.

PLEASE  FIX THIS !
Thanks,  Frank

I've chased this up with my Support to see if there has been any progress on this.

However, if Shane is unable to replicate then it could be a difficult one to resolve.

I don't get the black screen on either of my two Toshiba Win 10 upgraded laptops.

Have you tried an earlier version of the program to see if it can be nailed down to a specific version ?

The View more link in the right pane will give you access to 3.9.4

@ Profix - can you remember offhand which antivirus programs the machines were running.

I use Norton Security on mine and mine booted back up okay after running WR but it's thought WR could have changed the permissions for some and causing the black screen.

Can I suggest that you create a system image on any machine before running WR which can save you from having to clean install and then perhaps we can address why you need to run WR on them.

I tend to perform a repair install on my Win 10s when they don't seem right.

THANKS!!... I just un ticked the fix store apps, and all good...it has worked like a charm again on 3 win 10 machines.

FYI, for those that repair computers for a living, in the past week or so, we have had more clients calling, do to update messing with everything from internet to very slow PC's...  anyone else see this???

Also, this tool works great on fixing win 10 issues not included with WR.

Thanks again!!!

Whenever I run the repair program, I always uncheck all app repair boxes but that doesn't stop the many notifications of there was a problem with such and such an app and has been reverted to whatever after the reboot.

Yes, it was advised that KB4056892 for Win 10 which MS had released as a counter to Meltdown and Spectre could cause those problems.

They released KB4058258 on the 31st Jan. to rectify those problems. - https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4058258/windows-10-update-kb4058258

I don't know if you know about the netcfg cmds you can use for connectivity problems but Win 10 has a new one in netcfg -d which resets all network adapters which requires a reboot to effect.

It's also useful if one of the network adapters goes missing as it will restore it.

You can see what the other netcfg cmds can do by opening a cmd prompt and entering netcfg /?

For anyone else that complains of those symptoms then advise to perform a manual check for updates where they should get KB4058258 unless you ask them to bring the machine in if a laptop and you do it for them.

It may be worth uninstalling KB4056892 first if Windows will allow it where the machines are really unresponsive.
