Tile database is corrupt
« on: May 30, 2018, 02:34:27 pm »
I read that your product can fix this problem.  I tried the free version, and ran in safe mode, but it doesn't appear to fix this problem for me.

The problem is that taskbar search doesn't work and appear Cortana won't work/run because of the Tile database corruption.

I attach a screenshot from the MS STart Menu Troubleshooter

Free version took about 45 minutes to run on my PC, so I want to check if there are specific steps to use to correct this problem.

Thanks

When I get corruption in my Win 10 and a dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth or sfc /scannow commands don't fix it, I'll perform a repair install which doesn't affect personal stuff or installed programs.

Try those two cmds from a Command Prompt (Admin) and if they don't fix it, I'll run you though a repair install if you need it but you will require a Win 10 install disk or USB which you can get after reading the instructions at https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

However, I'm not sure if 1803 will fit onto a standard DVD and it's advised to use at least an 8GB USB stick.

Hi!  Thanks for fast reply.
I'm hesitant to try that windows repair install as I have RAID Drivers on my system, and I really need to do work the next two days.
Bummed the software won't fix this problem as I read reports that it does.
When I have more time to back-up my system, I can try the repair install.

I'm trying to attach a short video which demonstrates the problem...

A repair install takes about 3½hrs on my Win 10 laptop and then I sometimes have to reset whatever I have as my defaults, but it has no effect on any drivers except the Win 7 Realtek wireless driver that I use instead of the March 2016 it puts back on.

However, if you are concerned about your drivers then you can back them up from C:\Windows\System32 and if there is any detriment after the repair install then you can drag & drop them back in.

Did you perform the dism and sfc cmds to see what they reported.

The dism one is to repair the system and the sfc one is to check if any corruption remains - you could also check to see if your restore points would take you back to before this occurred.

Had you downloaded anything immediately prior to this occurring ?

My concern is that after re-install that win10 won't boot up.

I think I did try dism and sfc, but those I can run again.  There are many people who report same database tile error, and MS doesn't offer a good fix.

Beside the regular windows update, I downloaded & installed a bad program called FoneCopy, which also installed iTunes (I have no idea why backup software needs iTunes).  This trashed my system and it wouldn't boot.  Took me about 6 hours to get my PC working again.

You have to keep an eye open for unwanted bundled programs but these days it seems to be the norm to bundle them anyway without any option to uncheck a box and I've seen iTunes being reported as the cause of problems for quite a few.

A Google on your error brought up quite a few links with Fix in the title.

While I haven't read them all, this method worked for the guy who posted it - https://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/125068-how-to-fix-your-windows-10-start-menu-reset-tile-database

I've never had any problem booting up after a repair install, but hopefully that article will negate the need for a repair install.

I noticed one of the links had someone experience this problem after a clean install, so a repair install may or not resolve.

While I haven't got to the end of that thread, I noticed that someone had already tried what is in that article I've posted and it didn't work.

The post that suggested Tweaking.com's repair program was dated Feb. this year.

There have been a couple of updates since then so it may be worth trying one or two of the earlier versions, although I can't remember which it was back then.

You can get the earlier versions from - https://filehippo.com/download_tweaking-com-windows-repair/

The Mod on that forum who removed the name of the program obviously isn't aware that it has been known for MS techs to have used the repair program when they were stuck.

Just been looking at the home page and 4.0.13 was the version at the time of that Feb. post.

Depending upon when the program was used, it could also have been 4.0.12

Thanks!  I can try running the old version.  One Q - should I install the older version over the new, or do a full uninstall first?
I may be able to try this in the next day or two, but if not, it'll be another week or so as I'm traveling away from home.

Also to be sure, I am running it in Windows Safe Mode, as is recommended, correct?

Tried them.... no difference.

It's a pity about those cmds.

I think you will need to uninstall the newer version first, whereas if you try with 4.0.12 first, you will be able to install 4.0.13 on top of it as it will be an update - unless you want a clean install of the program each time.

Posting from may laptop now.  Wish I had a better report.
I installed the current version, rebooted, installed 4.0.13, and rebooted into safe mode, and ran tweaking.

Now my system is SNAFU.  It kind of boot windows, but all I get is black screen and mouse cursor when I move mouse.  Then mouse goes black...

Can't boot to safe mode either.

Suggestions?

Have you created Win 10 install media yet to see if it will boot up with that to see if you can use your restore points ?

If it doesn't, I've found that a Kaspersky Recue Disk will and can have therapeutic results after the scan and reboot.

https://support.kaspersky.co.uk/viruses/krd2018

I use the graphics option.

If that gets you back in then I think you will need to go for the repair install.

KRD seems to load and run OK.  What's next?

Let it complete its scan and then see if it will boot up afterwards.

The first time I used it, it initiated a chkdsk and then I was back in.

More bad news...it did the scan, but it broke the RAID.  Now, I'm getting the "Offline Member" error.
I did pull one drive (I use raid 1 "mirror"), so I should be able to get RAID back when I have time

So can you configure the BIOS to just read from the remaining drive - if I understand Raid1 ?

The RAID BIOS setup says it will wipe the disk.

That doesn't sound healthy.

Perhaps you should put Raid back on before progressing further.

I don't know what effect booting up with install media and performing a chkdsk /f would have on that set up.

MY hunch is it had something to do with Kapersky loading it up on Linux.  It did the file scan so the disk structure was intact.
