New Issue after running windows repair Portable
« on: March 03, 2014, 09:33:02 am »
Very nice tool , and I am a donator to your efforts.
fairly new windows 8.1 install on a Dell XPS8700 ,  sfc /scannow indicated that it found problems that it could not repair. So I ran you latest windows repair portable and it completed.  scf / scannow now reports its happy however when I go to hardware & sound , devices & printers and try to run the " add a device ", the window that normally scans for new hardware only opens for about a second and closes.  I'm now concerned that I will not be able to add any additional hardware on my machine.
Any thoughts or suggestions, don't want to rebuild this thing again for awhile.

That is a odd one, what repairs did you run, all of them?

Also if you check your device manager does any new hardware you plug in show up?

Also does the event viewer show any error messages?

OK so I wanted to see if I could replicate this.

I installed a fresh install of 8.1 in vmware, no updates and no other programs. Ran my Windows Repair and selected every single option. After it was done I rebooted and everything works. Windows updates, I was able to install from the app store.

So I then went to control panel and devices and printers and and clicked add new device. And boom same thing as you it opens and then just closes.

So I reinstalled 8.1 fresh again and I am doing 1 repair at a time and rebooting after each one and then testing the add device option until I find out which repair is causing it. Once I have an answer and a fix for you I will post back and then also get an update out for the Windows Repair as well. :cheesy:

Any problem I can replicate is a problem I can fix.

Found it!

It was the set windows to default startup.

The service is Device Association Service

Which the program puts to manual and should be automatic. If you go and start that service the add device works. I am updating the program to have it put to auto instead :-)

Checked and it was stopped.  Started and made sure it was auto ( now indicated ...> auto via trigger ) , think that's ok.  The service now works.
Thanks again , and for all your efforts on this tool.

And again thanks for the great support. !
