Update! Used "bootrec /rebuildbcd" successfully but the msconfig boot window is still frozen.

Shane:
Is the list still empty in the msconfig?

qurious:
Hi Shane.  Yes there is no difference and no default OS listed in either EasyBCD or Windows dropdown menu [screenshot].

Shane:
What version of Windows and are you dual booting at all?

Such as having more than 1 OS installed.

I found this

--- Quote ---Thanks for offering fixes but I fixed it myself. My installation was not corrupt, quite the opposite. It loaded fine and all was well with the only exception being that the list of systems had nothing in it under the Startup and Recovery area.

In any case I solved it by setting the (I'm in a RAID-0 array) C: partition to 'Active' which over-wrote the boot manager. I then started the startup recovery from the Windows 7 disc and it put the boot manager back.

I was trying to use the msconfig tool to set active processors on boot from 1 to 4 but it was initially all unavailable because there was no system labeled in the 'Startup' area (System and Recovery). All of this was fixed after repairing the boot manager. So perhaps that did somehow get 'corrupt' even though all was working fine.
