dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth produced:

did NOT run "dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup" as the previous did not say the volume is repairable then enter.


Ran "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" with these results:

Made the "manually upgrade to 1607" DVD and got these results:

"Setup couldn't start properly. Please reboot your PC and try running Windows 10 Setup again."
tried twice got the same results. now I'm off to "as you say, roost"

Boggin:
Can you run a chkdsk /f from the cmd prompt to see if that will run and if it reports any KBs in bad sectors.

Enter y when prompted then enter shutdown /r /t 00 to effect a reboot and let it do its thing.

I'm not sure if you can get into Event Viewer to view the log, but if you can, expand Windows Logs - click on Application then look for a Wininit entry - click on that then read the log in the scrollable window below.

Should you not be able to get into Event Viewer, watch the screen as the scan completes and you just have time to read near the bottom what it gives for KBs in bad sectors.

If no bad sectors and the updates or the manual update still doesn't work, then it may be that you are going to have to do a Reset this PC.

This will keep your personal stuff but will remove any programs you have installed, so if you have any paid for programs you will have to make a note of their product keys.

Press and hold Shift throughout a Restart and click on Reset this PC then select the option that will keep your personal stuff, but it may be advisable to first create a system image onto external media as well as copying your personal stuff separate.

chkdsk /f resulted in "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time system restarts (y/n)".

I have run chkdsk earlier in other attempts to find fix. No bad sectors were found. Among programs tried were Tweaking.com windows repair & Tweaking.com Technicians Toolbox.

got in event viewer but not sure if I see what you are talking about?

Event viewer (Local)\Applications & Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\WinINet. There are 2 WinINets. one has WinINet (Microsoft-Windows-WinINet-Capture) which has a Capture/Analytic log that is blank nothing in it.

The other WinINet has Config/ProxyConfigChanged log

I would really hate to do a reset this PC BUT if that is what it will take to get my PC back to normal that is what I will do. However it will take a while to gather up all the programs information.

You need to expand Windows Logs first and then click on the sub heading Application and then look for a Wininit entry with a time stamp for when you ran it.

Did the chkdsk /f complete to 100% before it rebooted to Windows ?

Have you tried a sfc /scannow or the updates again either through Windows Update or manually since running the chkdsk /f ?

If they still don't work then I can't see any option but to try the Reset this PC.

ran sfc /scannow > got to verification 46% complete
