Repair Failed

KatieWar:
My desktop computer is running Windows 7 64 Bit and I started having issues a little over a week ago.

I've run the Tweaking repair several times as the administrator, in both safe mode with networking and safe mode without networking.  I keep getting the same message:

"Done, but failed, at (2/8/2018 11:33:23 PM)
   Total Repair Time: 00:21:07

The current repair has failed to start 4 times."

It stops at 16/46 repairs.

I turned off McAfee before running.

My computer seems to run fine in safe mode but is slow and glitchy in regular mode.

Help!

Boggin:
That repair is for Windows Update.

Have you tried running the repair program with that box unchecked to see if the rest will run to completion ?

Have you performed a sfc /scannow prior to running the repair program ?

What sort of problems were you having that you decided to run the repair program ?

KatieWar:
Hello!

I just unchecked the Windows Update box and ran the repair again.  Same response.  Was working until it got to 16/45 and received the message "The current repair has failed to start 4 times.  Something is keeping the repair from running."

When I scanned the disk, no errors were found so I assume it's an issue with corrupted files.

I did run the sfc /scannow and the report came back as "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to repair some of them.  Details are included in the CBS.Log..."

The initial problems we were having started with Word - my husband was working off of files saved to an external hard drive that went bad.  After that, the computer was ridiculously slow.  It runs fine in safe mode.

My husband was able to take the external hard drive to Staples to have the disk backed up since there were documents on it that we needed.  The tech said that there were some corrupted files on that which couldn't be copied to the new external hard drive.  I don't know if that could have caused the issues.

KatieWar:
Not sure if I mentioned - I also tried repairing Windows from the installation disk and from the computer.  Neither of those worked either.

Boggin:
How did you try repairing it with the install disk ?

On one of my laptops, I downloaded and ran the trial version of HDSentinel which gives a written report on all drives that are internal or any external ones that are connected to the machine.

This told me the internal HDD was about ready to die yet, a chkdsk /r came back clean, as did Seatools for DOS and Seatools for Windows.

I took its word and replaced the HDD.

Can you download the Trial version of HDSentinel to see what it reports for your HDD just as a second opinion.

Uninstall it when done as this will stop the clock on the 30 day trial and then you can run it again as and when from the .exe Application in your Downloads folder.

https://www.hdsentinel.com/download.php

Can you perform another sfc /scannow and if it still reports corruption, copy & paste this cmd to the cmd prompt and press enter.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log > %userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This will put an icon onto the desktop which when double clicked will open the CBS log in Notepad - can you copy & paste that to the reply box.

You can also download and run SFXFix.exe which will produce its own report of which it may be able to repair some or all of what a sfc /scannow cannot.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/sfcfix.html

This needs to be run immediately after a sfc /scannow as the CBS log can be volatile, but as the computer runs fine in safe mode, I'm wondering if you have picked up an infection.

This will need to be checked before you run the sfc /scannow and SFCFix.exe.

Can you create a Kaspersky Rescue Disk and boot up with that - it's best to Ethernet connect to run it as it needs to "phone home" to update its Definitions and use the graphics option.

This scan can take a while but it's effective and can repair Windows in some circumstances.

As the computer works fine in Safe Mode then you can boot into Safe Mode with Networking to download and create the rescue disk.

Run the sfc /scannow etc. after it has scanned your system.
