Well Tom, I bit the bullet and reformatted and reinstalled win 7 and it works!
now battling to reinstall all my software...

You have been nothing short of spectacular in your willingness to try and help me, I truly appreciate all your help.
If i get any other probs i will come back to you (if I may)
thanks buddy, you are a star!

Boggin:
A bit drastic I suppose but at least you now have things as they should be, although it would have been educational to find what had been causing all of the trouble.

You're welcome any time.

Thanks also to satrow for his contribution.

ha33y:
I know Tom, it was very drastic especially since I didn't want to do this but I really can't waste any more time on this
Of course than you to everyone who tried to help, I really appreciate it.
My original disk is original Win 7 so its now downloading service pack 1....I do hope it behaves itself after the updates....

....i am holding my breath.......

Boggin:
Well that's another story :) - but at least you have two methods of fixing Windows Update in a link to SURT and those cmds to reset the update components.

On the odd occasion when I factory reset my Win 7 laptop, I used to leave Windows Updates to last and run them overnight because there were over 1GB of them even without SP1.

Boggin:
As you appear to have a valid Win 7 retail key, should you need to reinstall in future or need to boot up with the install disk, you can download a Win 7 SP1 ISO after entering your product key at https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows7 and then use https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=56485 to create either a bootable DVD or USB.

You would need a SP1 install disk should you ever need to repair install or boot up with it to repair your computer.
