Flow control?

(1/2) > >>

Samson:
Hi Shane,

Just a quickie

I was reading your tips for network adapters and enabling "Flow Control".
I have an Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection. Under "Flow Control" settings I have the following options:

Generate
Generate and Respond
Off
Respond

Which of these would you recommend, presumably not "off ", so which of the remaining options should I use?

Thanks, Samson.

Shane:
I have some network cards where I have to turn flow control off!

It really does depend on the network card when it comes to flow control.

Try off, and then try Generate and Respond and see which one does best for you

Hi Shane,

Initial results show no discernible difference between "Off" and "Generate and respond". I will continue to experiment over the next few days and see where I am then, thanks again Shane.

Here is how I test.

Install my simple internet meter lite

Then with it running copy come files to another system ont he network, a nice large file. And then you can monitor the speed that you get with the different settings

Hi Shane,

We have a winner  :cheesy:

I used your simple internet meter lite and tested with a 100MB+ size file....For my card the best setting is to have Flow Control set to "Off"

Thank you for your help, advice and yet another great little program, and another "tweak" that has helped me to wring a bit more speed from my lowly set up

I have let a few of my friends know about your simple internet meter lite, as some of them are on monthly download limits from their ISPs and this will help monitor their usage and prevent them going over their limits. I am on an unlimited (fair usage applies) download contract so no problem there for me.

Thanks again, enjoy your weekend.

Samson.
