Hi,

No, haven't tried Windows Repair as yet, haven't needed it, but will if I ever do because I know programs from tweaking.com to be good. Just thought y'all would like to know of the failure to backup registry in my case, tried it several times.

I let Registry Backup backup my registry once a day at boot time and have used it to restore a few times when needed.

Thanks.

Hi,

Have used registry backup for years without problems. Decided to update to newest version 3.5.3 but it wouldn't detect VSS as running on XP SP3 and failed to backup with fallback method disabled. Uninstalled it and installed v. 1.6.7, it detected VSS as running and successfully backed up the registry with fallback method disabled.

Sorry, but it still doesn't work.

I guess I'm about to uninstall Registry Backup and just depend on Erunt until this issue is resolved.

Thanks for trying to help, tho'.

I am at a loss on that one as well since the program is calling the Windows API. Only thing I can think of is that the API will not except reg backups that are on a network drive, I think it should be fine if they are on a different drive though, where do you have them saving to?

I've created a folder E:\RegBackup where I store my backups. It's on the same physical hard drive with Windows (C:\), but it's a separate (logical) partition.

Also here are a couple of other ways to restore.

Thanks, but I'm very low on bandwidth left for the month. I'll watch the videos when I get my next allotment (22 days), but I'll stick with Erunt for the time being. At one time I had it set up just right, but since using your program, I've forgotten how to get it to work the way I want it to. I'm getting old, forget how to do stuff real quick these days. I know it has to do with a .ini file, but can't get it right.

5
No .old files in that location.

I don't know how or where to move registry hives, so they must be in the default location.

It's a fresh install of XP SP3 and all known updates so everything api-wise should be like new.

6
Lots of bug fixes in 1.6.7 since 1.6.1. SO make sure to always use the newest :-)

The restore code works by doing 2 things. When you do the restore from the program itself it uses the Windows API to load the reg files and for the user profiles registry files it uses the pending move at startup command.

Shane
Tried the new version and it still doesn't restore the registry. I let it make an auto backup then used CCleaner to remove a couple of unimportant but erroneous entries, rebooted again, then checked with CCleaner to make sure the erroneous entries were still not present, then tried restoring from within Registry Backup and when I rebooted the registry entries were still gone.

Before I installed Fedora 19 along with Grub2, this wouldn't have been the case.

I don't know why it's not working, all I know is that it isn't.

- Try Registry Backup version v1.6.7.
- Regarding switching to Linux: I would recommend installing an AV program suitable for XP first.
I'm an Avira beta tester. Always ahead of the curve in that regard.

I did upgrade to 1.67, but haven't tried the registry restore since. Do you think it would make any difference?

Has there been a change that restores the registry during shutdown rather than while it boots back up?

Erunt works. Just thought you would like to know.

Hi again,

I've just discovered since installing Fedora 19 on another hard drive that restoring the registry does not work when you reboot. I'm running XP HE SP3 (fresh install and completely updated) and using Tweaking.com Registry Backup 1.6.1 and shadow copy seems to be working perfectly.

Is there a way to make the registry restore with Grub2 installed on the MBR or would I be better served by Erunt? I have no idea if it would restore the registry correctly with Grub2 installed either, but am looking for ideas.

I'm trying to make the switch to Linux before support for XP lapses at the end of June next year, but this issue is bothering me and I need some advice.

Thanks for any advice or help that you may provide.

[added]

I'm trying to keep Windows XP for my compatible programs and (especially) games and I'm going to use Linux for web activities. Hoping SteamOS comes out soon and that it's as great as anticipated.

Yeah looks like vss on the system is crashing.

Have you tried each of these solutions yet?

Hi Shane,

Actually, I have not tried those suggestions, but I did resolve the issue by wiping my hard drive using Darik's Boot and Nuke and installing XP SP3 (using Autostreamer to build a slipstreamed CD). I tried just reinstalling Windows XP SP3, but I couldn't update Windows, but the wipe did the trick.

Now I'm trying to tweak my system the way I had it before, but it's going to be a long drawn out process, so it appears.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions though.

There's one tool that can solve this VSS problem. I've used it already many times.
http://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50010.aspx
Thanks so much for trying to help me, Willy2, but I'm sorry to say, the tool did not help.

It still flashes a green "yes" that shadow copy is ready, but then goes back to a red "no" and RB does not back up the registry.

I can see that vssvc.exe is running in Task Manager, so I can't understand why it doesn't work, but it doesn't.

Thanks again.

VSS requires - at least - the Services called Volume Shadow Copy & SWPRV. I have the same problems form time to time. And yes, running WR on a XP system does "break" VSS.
I re-registered SWPRV.DLL and it did not help. I'm thinking about reinstalling XP, but I know I'll never get it tweaked the way I have it now.

I stupidly deleted my backups before this happened, so I guess that's about my only choice.

I'm going to download autostreamer and try to integrate SP3 into the installation DVD, but I've never used it so I'm not sure I can do it.

Thanks a lot for your reply Willy2.

General Computer Support / Volume Shadow Copy not running XP HE SP3
« on: October 07, 2013, 09:19:46 am »
Hello,

I was having some computer problems so I ran Windows Repair (All in One) v1.9.18 and it seems to have fixed many problems I was having (blue screens), but now my Tweaking.com Registry Backup won't use Volume Shadow Copy. It flashes a green "yes" that it's running for just a second then turns red again and says "no".

What services are required for VSS to run in Windows XP Home Edition SP3 and what may I do to fix it so that Registry Backup can successfully backup my registry using VSS?

This was another one of those times when I rebooted and Registry Backup wasn't making a backup.

I'm a rebooter, what can I say?

I will let you know if it happens again though.

Thanks a lot!

Is this with v1.6.1?
Yes.

I don't understand it either. The only startup programs I have running are:

AMD Dual Core Optimizer
avgnt
NvCplDaemon
Outpost Monitor
ProcessGovernor
ProcessLasso Management Console
SoundMaxPnP
WinPatrol
xp-AntiSpy Profile Check

and of course

razerhid.exe which is delayed by 20 seconds by WinPatrol

Everything usually gets along swimmingly except when I accidentally right clicked yesterday.

Hi again,

I found out something else; if I accidentally right click on the desktop (which usually bring up display context menu) before Windows has completely loaded, it causes Registry Backup to crash.

This has only happened once, but I have the impression that it would happen every time if I right click before all startup programs have loaded.

Just thought you might like to know.

Yeah, I agree.

To hear some folks tell it, they hardly ever shutdown or reboot.

BTW, I really like your programs. I haven't had the opportunity to use any except Reg Backup and Compressor, but it's nice to know your others are available if I need them.

Hi,

No, it would crash when the pc was rebooted during times after the auto backup had already been created.

IOW, Registry Backup would crash when it wasn't doing anything at all.

I guess I'm a leftover from Win9x days, I haven't ever gotten over rebooting after program installs, after playing a 3D pc game etc.

Hello,

I have had a conflict between Tweaking.com Registry Backup and another startup program for some time and I finally took it upon myself to figure out which one it was.

The problem manifested itself by causing Registry Backup to crash, not every time, but once in a while.

The program that Registry Backup conflicted with is a mouse software program called razerhid.exe.

I fixed the problem by using Winpatrol to delay the startup of razerhid.exe by twenty seconds, since then, no more problem.

Just thought you would like to know.

I use XP SP3, 32 bit.

This also improved boot up time.
