Title: Volume shadow Copy and Reg backup
Post by: whiggs on January 28, 2017, 08:57:01 am
Ok, so I I have never gotten this to work, EVER, but haven't really minded it because it still works with the simple copy method.  Now I am having to restart my computer simply to unlock a user registry file, so now seems as good a time as any to ask why, even when I specifically go into my "services" and manually run every single service that has the words "volume shadow" in it, why will regbackup absolutely refuse to use the method that utilizes volume shadow services?  Is the text that is shown on the registry back up window not accurate?  Does the application just not like me?  ?

I've never had any problems using the registry backup from within the Windows Repair program, but never use the restore points one.

Do you have System Protection enabled and is adequate space allocated for the restore points.

My Win 10 defaults to 2% but I slide that to 3% on a 640GB HDD and that allows up to ~17GB.

Ok.  Let me clarify the issue.  Its not that the application doesn't work at all.  The attached picture shows the issue that I am having.  The difference between the two being that (supposedly) when using the volume shadow copy service, you can copy files even if they are locked (because they are in use or other reason).  However, since the volume shadow service method refuses to work, here is the line out of the log file for that particular backup attempt:
[1/28/2017 - 11:47:40 AM] Backing Up File: C:\Users\Administrator\ntuser.dat
[1/28/2017 - 11:47:40 AM] Result: Failed - Error: -1 (API Reg Save Failed (), Tried File Copy, File In use, Cannot copy.)

Thus, I am still trying to figure out how to get the volume shadow copy method to work correctly.  For more information, look under the FAQ for Registry backup under "What advantages are there versus ERUNT?"

- Are you able to create System Restore Points ? Because this use the "Volume Shadow Copy" as well.
- Dd you already run the Tweaking Windows Repair program ?

- Did a "Backup Failed" process show up in Task Manager after you have used the program ?
- Did you untick the "Always use fallback ...................... " option in "Advanced Settings" ?
- Pull up the logs and attch them to your next reply. Perhaps they will give a clue of what's going on.

I've just run my 3.9.24 Pro - first created registry backup and mine showed the same as yours in that it was auto using the Fallback method.

I then created a restore point and when I clicked on Restore and System Restore opened, no restore point had been created.

I've tried this on two machines with the same results

Mine are default settings.

I'll pass this onto Shane as you shouldn't have to change anything to create either.

BTW - We are all volunteers on the forum but someone will get back to you.

- I ran RB on my Win 7 but didn't experience any problems. So, it could be Win 10 related.

So was a restore point created and did the registry backup show as using the Fallback method ?

Are you using the standalone 3.5.3 or backing up from within WR as I am ?

The first two laptops I tried it on were Win 10 but having seen your post, I've just tried it on my Win 7 laptop and got the same results as I did on the Win 10 machines.

- I ran WR v3.9.24 PRO and from there the RB tool but had no problem at all.
- In one regard my Win 7 system is a bit different. I have moved & keep moving all the non-system files to the end of the drive (c:). My c: drive has currently only ~ 15% free disk space. I assume moving those file to the end of the drive will help to speed up Windows 7.

I wouldn't know how to move my files like that.

- Piriform's Defraggler or JK Defrag.

I just use Windows own defrag once a month with the cmd defrag /c and that goes through all of the volumes.

I use WR Pro 3.9.24 on a Windows 7 Home Premium 64x laptop and have the Registry Backup component set to create a registry backup automatically every day. It's configured to do this using VSS shadow copy and appears to do this faultlessly. Only a couple of times has it defaulted to the fallback method and I suspect this has occurred when I've been fiddling with the settings of Beta versions of Malwarebytes 3.0 to get them to run successfully.

I've got a shortcut to the registry backup folder on my desktop and am in the habit of checking it regularly to make sure all the expected files are there.

I haven't seen where I can change this setting - any pointers ?

Sorry, Boggin, which setting are you referring to?

Can you change it not to auto use the Fallback method ?

Thanks, S_G

I've unchecked the box to always use the Fallback method and created a registry back up but the restore point back up still isn't creating a restore point - how about you ?

Thanks for the PM - I've just created a Restore Point successfully using WR - see image (with personal details removed!). I did have some problems with an earlier version of WR/RB but seems to work smoothly now.

Changing the setting did nothing for me.

Anyway, I'm off now for some trough and watch a bit of telly.
