Tweaking.com Support & Help / Two Windows 10 Problems - Tool Fixed Neither
« on: December 18, 2016, 05:14:57 pm »
My Windows 10 Home Edition 64 bit would not let me left click on the Start button.  It gave me no error - it just didn't do anything.  Right-clicking worked fine.  I also couldn't get into Settings. Windows +I did nothing.  Right-clicking a blank area of the taskbar and selecting Settings also did nothing.  After running a full Malwarebytes (clean), AdwCleaner (ditto), system file checker (which found no integrity violations), and creating a new User (no change), I ran a full Tweaking Repair, unchecking nothing.  Safe Mode with Networking of course.

Although it says it fixed some problems, the only 2 things I was concerned about still fail to function.  Shouldn't there be something in there that allows access to W10 Settings?  And allows the Start icon to work?

For some reason or other, checking for updates in Win 7 has been taking some time - on another forum - up to three weeks!

I had that error 80244019 when checking for updates in Win 7 and found that by running Step #2 Pre-Scan, it found problems with Environment Variables and Reparse Points.

Using the program to fix those fixed the Check for updates without the need to run any other of the repairs in WR.

Are you now able to get all of the updates ?
Yes.  For some reason I decided to edit my original post instead of replying.  My edit is shown after the asterisks in that OP.   The error 80244019 was not an error directly associated with attempting the updates - I would click on 'check for updates' and it would just run hour after hour with nothing happening.  The error 80244019 was only encountered after using Windows Fix-It Tool - that's the error Fix-it would return, saying it could not correct that problem.  It was only after that Fix-It error that I used the tool from Tweaking All In One Repair....
Installing just a few at a time can also prevent further errors such as a Failed for some and just installing a few at a time will give you the opportunity to vet those as you select them should any be related to Telemetry or ease of upgrade or Windows Update Agent, which should help to avoid an auto upgrade to Win 10 if you don't want it.

Clicking on each update and then on More info in the right pane will tell you what each is for.

Changing your Windows Update settings to Check for but let me choose... will afford you that option rather than allowing them to auto update en-masse.

Should you find yourself with the actual Win 10 update or the Windows icon in the system tray and you don't want Win 10 just yet or ever, then download the GWX Control Panel which has preventative steps for whichever stage you find yourself at and which are reversible should you decide to go ahead with the upgrade before the 28th July 2016 cut off point for the free upgrade.

I've already downloaded, extracted and run the bat file from Tweaking that supposedly keeps the W10 update nag at bay.

I did a factory reinstall of Windows 7 Home Premium earlier today and noticed that I was on IE9.  I ran Windows Updates and saw nothing beyond the 'checking for updates' bar for over a half hour.  I ran the Windows FixIt tool which gave me an error of 80244019.  Fed up with Microsoft's inabilities I downloaded Tweaking's All-in-one Repair, booted in safe mode with networking and deselected everything but Windows Updates.  It's now been running that single repair for over an hour.  Every now and then I see some activity on Drive Write and CPU Usage at the bottom of the page.  Drive Read is always 0 bytes.  Memory Used is now consistently hovering around 730MB.

I obviously have to Stop Repairs, but don't know what to do next...

***

Never mind.... After cancelling, I ran the update repair a second time, this time it taking all of 22 seconds.  And this time it worked perfectly.  Your tool never fails to impress.

If you go back to your first post...select modify, then you can add "SOLVED" to the thread title. (As it appears that you have done in your last post), but this will mark the whole thread as "SOLVED".
Okay.  I just rather thought that if a topic was marked Solved there would be some indication on the Computer Help page - the page that lists the topics.  For me, I see nothing to tell me that the thread has been solved.

Wow v3.0.0 is from march 2015, how on earth did you have such a old copy and it didnt tell you there was an update?
The v3.0.0.0 was downloaded through bleepingcomputer.com.  I accessed that website via a Google search with the problematic laptop.  Duplicating that same search on another non-problematic laptop and selecting bleepingcomputer still has me download v3.0.0.  And yes I did see that an update was available, but the problem child was running soooo slow and it took soooo long to go through the sfc scan, the chkdsk, the download and install of your tool, that I just went with what I'd already installed.  Besides, I've been using Tweaking's All-in-one repair for a number of years, and I'm sure that back in March, when 3.0.0 was current, I'd used it without any problems.  I certainly understand that you always want people to use the most current version of an application, but that shouldn't affect the functionality of older copies of that same software.  Internet Explorer 10 didn't stop working when they came out with IE11
Also always run the repairs in safe mode :-)
Shane
Yes, I did run both 3.0.0 and 3.2.5 in safe mode.  And I can find no way to change this topic to (Solved).  I tried changing the heading to no available, and there seems to be no button or checkbox for that function.  Why not just put an empty check box after 'Don't use smileys' and label it 'Solved'?

8
Thanks, guys!  Why the version I was running should be so flawed is a mystery, but 3.2.5 did the trick.

9
I began to run the tool last night before I went to bed.  Over 8 hours later it was still running and seemed to still be on the first step..  I stopped the repairs, unchecked everything except for Reset Registry Permissions, and started the repairs.  Forty minutes later, and it's still running.

I had previously run Malwarebytes, AdwCleaner, JRT and Hitman Pro 3.  Only the AdwCleaner and JRT found anything.  SFC / Scannow did find some integrity violations but was unable to fix all of them.  Chkdsk ran clean.

Enclosed is the Log from the 8.5+ hour run, and a screenshot from the current Step1 repair.

Good to hear the windows repair got the updates working.  :cheesy:
Yeah, your app got it working (on the 2nd try - but who's counting?) after the Windows Update Readiness
Tool came up small.  I was minutes away from a complete reformat and reinstall when the 'retry' on the updates was successful.
As for the scan, the more files to scan the longer it takes, 3.5 million seems like WAY, WAY to many files on the system. On my heavy installed system I only have 250,000 files. But MS does scan inside compressed files so that would increase the number, but not to over 3.5 million.
And strangely enough, this shows up as a 282GB HDD with 242GB free.  I have no idea where the 3.5 mil are...
Have you ran the windows disk cleanup yet and had it cleanup everything? I am curious how much it finds to clean.
One of the things I did BEFORE the MSE scan was to run the Disk Cleanup.  It hardly found anything - maybe 60-70 MGs.  I checked everything and removed what there was.  When the MSE scan finally ended, it found nothing.  I'm currently running ESET Online Scanner, and it's about halfway done

Well, to answer my own topic yet again... The repairs ran successfully - the log file for Repair_Windows_Updates was over 3.5MG - it REALLY deleted a lot of files.  After the repairs and a restart, I attempted to install 56 updates.  It ran for at least an hour, finally giving me a msg that the 56 updates were canceled (no error code), and giving me an option to retry.  The retry did the trick - all 56 updates were successfully downloaded and installed.

I am now running a full MSE scan for the first time - this had a corrupted AVG application that I had to use an AVG uninstaller to remove.

The MSE scan has now been running for just over 15 hours - it appears to be about 85% complete, and it has scanned over 3.5 million files.

Assuming I'm not just talking to myself, does that seem like a lot of files and a lot of time?  If I set this up to run a full scan every week at 1:00AM Monday and it runs for say 17 hours, the laptop would be useless until 6:00PM Monday evening.

The System Update Readiness Tool has finally downloaded.  When I click on it I get screen 1 for about 30 minutes, followed by screen 2.

I am using a different computer for this reply - I can only do a quick reply on the problem laptop (and no attachments on a quick reply) - when I hit (normal) reply, I get disconnected from the network.  So now I am running the Repairs.

General Computer Support / Pre Repairs Scan Quandary
« on: May 05, 2015, 04:53:35 pm »
On a Toshiba Satellite 64 bit laptop running W7 Home Premium SP1 I ran the Pre Repairs Scan and got the included attachment.

It tells me Scan Complete - Problems Found!   Please Check The Log For More Information.  What log?  The log file in Windows Repair (All In One)\Logs is empty.

Obviously I need help with these errors.  I began to download the System Update Readiness Tools, but it looks like it's still got HOURS to got before it's complete

As for chrome remove the adobe flash add in and reinstall it
Thanks, but Chrome has a built-in plug-in that makes Flash a part of the browser.  The actual fix is to go to the Chrome Plug-in page and notice that there's 2 Shockwave Flash plugins.  Disable the one called pepperflash plugin and you'll  then be using the other one - Macromedia's Flash - the same one used by Firefox.

Don't know if there's any way to incorporate that into Tweaking.com, but it's a solid bit of information I'm  passing on.

Sorry that I took some of my computer frustrations out on you.  It was a catch-22 situation.  I was sure that this product would help, but I couldn't install it because it said it couldn't create shortcuts.  Then I couldn't use the portable zip version because I couldn't extract the files.  And I no the laptop's inability to extract zip files was not related to your program, but rather to problems with the laptop.  I guess this laptop's OS was just too screwed up to install your product.

Ultimately, I found a way to get around the itunes issue that prevented me from doing a Windows 7 Repair Install.  Once I completed that upgrade I was easily able to run your normal executable, which installed the Tweaking.com All In One Repair tool.  I'm not sure what it corrected since the repair install really seemed to fix most everything.  I suppose I put an unfair burden on your product, expecting that it would do everything that the repair install did.

The only thing I have to do npw is figure out why Chrome won't play youtube videos, and how to get rid of the current itunes version which won't run and reinstall a new version.

Had already run roguekiller last week.  Ran it again today and it found 1 insignificant registry entry.   I removed it anyway, but it
made no difference on my inability to install Tweaking.com.  The other link you supplied to me to a page where they blab about ar MSI fixer tool.  Sounded promissing, but when you click on THAT link it takes you to this page:http://www.techsupportall.com/.  Try it yourself

I appreciate the time you 're giving me, but the second link was useless and you seem to be intent on not actually solving my problem with the Tweaking error as much as fixing the problems that could be fixed if I had a workable Tweaking.com Repair tool.  .  I thought the idea behind this product was to minimize reinstalls.  If I could only get rid of itunes I'd do a repair install, but I can't get rid of itunes, and I can't use your tool, so I guess the only solution is a total reinstall.

What a disappointment.

1 - running anti-malware software will help.
Have already run full MSE scan, TDSSKiller, BitDefender, ComboFix, ESET scanner and Mbar.  They find nothing.  Malwarebytes will not install
2 - You have to do a bad sector check.
Ran chkdsk /r /f.  No problems
3 - Make sure the date of Windows is correct? If the problem still? Then, I advise you to do repair system files
Date & time are correct
4 - Try to disable or remove any anti-virus and see if you're able to install anything! Here's my website http://free-antivirus-solutions.webs.com/uninstallers-security-tools
Turning off MSE Real Time Protection does nothing.  The only thing I've been able to install lately is mbar - malwarebytes' rootkit findere.  I'd love to do a repair install, but itunes has to be uninstalled first, and I cannot uninstall (I'm getting a msg about a problem with Windows Installer).  Seemed like your Tweaking Repair would be ideal , but if it won't install then it's useless to me.

Gee, I hope your product is better than your support forum.  Does anyone have an answer to my original problem that does not involve the use of a zip extractor?

One of the problems I was hoping to correct was the loss any of zip extraction accessory.  Although I have 7-zip on this laptop I am no longer able to right click on the zip file to extract the contents.  When I right click the file all I get is open with, and I can't choose a program.  I have to set a default association for the zip extension, and I don't know what that should be with z-zip.

ASUS laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1, 64 bit.  It's really screwed up - Cannot install Windows .net framework 4.5.1, cannot install Chrome because of that, no youtube on Firefox.  Internet Explorer gives me a white screen with the spinning blue circle, the it just closes, cannot install malwarebytes, etc....

Tried your product, but it won't install - I get a msg box that reads Could not create uninstall shortcut.

I don't care about the shortcut, but the Tweaking Repair tool never installed because of the error.

Thanks for the reply - I had no idea that W7 gave you no choice about who would manage your wireless configuration.  We just started using our Windows 7 desktop wirelessly and, unfortunately it has no internal wifi capability, so I tried to use a WUSB54GC V3 adapter.  I had EXTREMELY slow internet response, was only seeing one or two bars on the tray indicator, and I was searching for a reason.  I thought it might be because Windows WAS NOT managing my wifi.

Since I posted I have moved the adapter to a USB port in the front of the machine and I now seem to always have a minimum of 4 bars.  All is good, and thanks for the education and for your tools.

TESTIMONIAL
I have an old XP tower in which the search function would always initially display an empty space in the Type of File field, and I was then able to search correctly (usually on an external HDD).  But subsequent searches on the drive were always unsuccessful because it would fill in AAC audio book on the type of file, and I had no ability to change it to (All Files and Folders), which was not listed in the pull-down.  I would then have to close the explorer window for the drive, reopen it, and reinitiate the search every time to get back to the blank file type.

Your Windows Repair tool care of this very annoying problem (I have 2 externals drives on the tower and was probably searching for something on both of the drives 3 or 4 times a day).  After the initial search it now always defaults to a file type of (All Files and Folders).

Thank you!

On Windows 7, my Wireless Connection Properties screen is missing the middle tab - the one for Wireless Networks.  The tweaking tool did not resolve the issue.
