Hi,
try this .
1. Go to Administrative Tools/Services and find the Windows Update service. Stop it.
2. Go to C:\Windows\ and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to something like SoftwareDistribution.old
3. Restart the Windows Update service.
4. Click the Check for Updates button on the Windows Update screen.
5. Windows will perform the check - it may take some time, so leave it running. Eventually it will successfully complete.
6. You can then delete the SoftwareSistribution.old folder.

Hi, I have suggested a possible solution to stop the service and to restart. If you are having hardware failure or some system files have been deleted , then you could use the system restore.
Trying to help you without any loss. If your system is hanging in BSOD, that suggest hardware failure.
My solution is workable, provided your system has not have any other problem, than window updates.
Could you boot your computer in safe mode? If, you could do , then resort to SR.

Hi, Sorry tht solution did not work.
But let me put this way. Deep analysing could be done by the user only. The solutions are given based on the similar situations experienced by the other users or in the know how of the users.
How could one actually know just by codes the intricate problem one may have in their hardwares.
Normally those are the codes , denoting errors in wu services.
Even the microsoft, only gives links , like sfc scan, chkdsk and other links in their replies.
I had the same problem and i got it rectified by Shanes suggestion of changing to google dns, and also with syncing the internet time in the date and time settings.
If somebody has internal hardware problem this solution would not work. Even microsoft hotfix does not produce the result in one go.
                                          please understand.

Hello jraju, last week my wife's W7 SP1 computer had the same problem of not getting updates. I Googled and found the solution with the rename SoftwareDistribution-OLD routine and although it took quite some time for the updates to download it did resolve the problem. Reading the comments made by "the Member with dots for a name" I must say that although he appears to have a deep knowledge of the innards of computer structuring he seems to have more problems than I have had in thirty years and my knowledge is quite sparse. I do not know the level of his grasp of the English language but he sounds rather terse in his requests and responses to apparent resolving answers. If he continues in this vein he could find offers of help being sparse.

Change your Windows Update settings to Never then download KB3172605 - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53335&WT.mc_id=rss_windows_7

This is July's update agent roll up which can help with hung check for updates.

After it has downloaded, change your update settings back to auto or check for but let me choose and that will start the check for updates again.

Give it about half an hour or so and if it still doesn't produce any, use WSUS Offline installer.

https://malwaretips.com/threads/tutorial-how-to-download-and-update-windows-using-wsus-offline-update.57320/

http://download.wsusoffline.net/

Hit the green button under Most recent version, but given what else is wrong with your system, I'd leave the updates until either you have factory reset/repair/reinstall.

I did not try I will not try.
I will never-ever be repaired (re-install the system)
Remember that everything is possible to fix without reinstalling or repairing the system and without losing any settings.
I now have a special script that solves all the issues.

I'm referring to my last reply, but whatever you decide to do with your machine will be up to you.

Sometimes there's no option but to factory reset/reinstall.

I'm done.

For example. I used the repair options WMI and I would undo only this the only change without having to undo everything (without using System Restore and restore the registry) How to do it? You answer me or not?
Why is there no such option "Undo changes WMI made by WR"?

I am disappointed that in this forum there are no ready-made solutions
As usual, I myself have to fix everything because no one know how to fix it.

Best FIX:
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\winmgmt:  changed registry value ImagePath from: %systemroot%\system32\svchost.exe -k winmgmt to: %systemroot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs. FIXED!
Title: Re: edit: Windows 7 SP1 Windows Update stuck checking for updates
Post by: Boggin on July 23, 2016, 11:30:03 am
This thread is about Windows Updates, but WR warns to create a registry and restore point back up because the program is registry change orientated.

When you run a series of repairs, they are done en bloc so the only way to undo any of them would be either to use the registry restore or restore point restore where all changes are reverted.

Before running any major program like WR, as a safeguard I always create an external system image should none of those bring my computer back when things go wrong.

I would have thought that you would have been savvy to also have done this.

From your previous threads and what you have been changing, there's no telling what state your system was in prior to running WR, but there are times when things are beyond repair and the only way is a factory reset/reinstall.

I have no more advice to give you other than what I already have - what you do is now up to you.

"Ditto" that. I too have seen my posts "smited", not for technical reasons, but because it is not what Makinero has wanted to hear.

I will openly admit that I have "smited" Makinero once, that was for the way that they responded to another member's offer of help. Clearly I am not alone in my judgement.

Edit: I just took another "smite" hit for this post. Pretty pathetic Makinero.

without repair or reinstall without the suggestions and recommendations of pseudo-experts
Nothing is impossible, there are only difficult cases

Offer help, which does not solve any problems !!! and causes other errors.
Why pseudo-expert? blindly found wrong solution on google, online, on different pages and not with total certainty that it will help for sure.
Offer a "pseudo-repair-solutions" that damage system files, system etc. and later as asking how to undo it says: DO NOT KNOW!

People try to help you but you just throw it back in their faces.

If you know the solution then why bother to waste people's time by opening threads.

I provide full logs, log analysis, it takes a long time to make the correct decision as it should fix the problem. I I have examined a few days, and that's why I was able to finally solve the problem.
If someone does not know what the error code means and what this may be due to only invents "bad solution" that "supposedly" can help.
