I use Carbonite for storage.. I dont have an external.
I can ask around for a sp2 disk but since I have everthing to Carbonite I may still try it. Been hoping to not have to go that route but looks like its necessary.
thanks again
will update later this week

the only enum was under Current control set    not  Services.  It would not allow me to rename it, but it wasnt the one you were looking for as it was not under services.

Yes they were all auto and started.

when i first clicked on the Windows update under services a pop up said:   Configuration manager: The specified device instance handle does not correspond to a present device.

But when I click on OK it went to the window that said it was automatic and started.

The link you sent said to place it on manual under the BITS ... I did not I left it automatic.

Looks like everthing is set to automatic.... Is started the same thing as running?

I think there is like 16,000 errors and warnings on the event viewer under Administrative events.Sll the way back to 2012. Also MSE is the only thing that updates. The computer wont even look for udates, repeats saying to restart cause its currently installing...

Sorry, not that easy. Did the cmd promp, I guess it ran, it asked if I wanted to and I said yes. Then left it for 8 hours or so. Restarted, tried the link you gave. Downloaded but would not run error 0x80070422.
Did all this twice. Not working, also tried the windows update after all this now I get"windows update cannot check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."
Have another idea?

Hi, I found tweaking on google search last year and have ran it a number of times as recent as today. I read how others are fixed and keep hoping mine will be but nothing seems to help. I cannot get windows to  update anything except MSE, and havent for over a year. Always says to restart, then I do, then it says last update never, I click on check for updates and then Im back to it saying restart.  One big loop, insanity! I have Windows Vista home premium service pack 2. 32bit.
Have ran superspyware, malewarebytes, Microsoft security essentials, Webroot secure anywhere, seems like its all clean, just nothing works to start updating.
