Something really odd occured on my windows xp.For some reason ,it won't show any users on welcome screen.I've manage to get around it by using Alt+Ctrl+Del+Del,typed my user and password then immediately set my computer to autologon on my user by WinKey+R,control userpasswords 2,unthicked User must press Alt+Ctrl+Del and entered my account info.
Still the problem wasn't solved at all.If a re-enable the welcome screen, the event will repeat.Any user or logon domain i attempted to create turned into "ghosts".User and Groups i made were made but my PC cant see them for some reason
1.I read many posts online and suggested system restore. The problem is Windows XP disk cleanup !!! Deletes !!! all restore points.
2.Some suggested i have registry problems.I backed up my registry after i Installed Windows,Drivers and basic Programs.Tried restoring the registry,no luck.
3.Some suggeste my SAM was corrupt and needed replacement, unfourtunatrly i would like to avoid this method since it will delete all my user data and i have a program linked to it and i have ti purchase it again if i do so
4.Even F8 -> Last Known Good Configuration ,get me a BSOD(Blue Screen of Death),but the rest of the modes worked, except for the welcome screen
The Problem - No users

The Problem - Users and Local Groups do exist !!! User dondon,Shadow,WarCry,localgroup Users2 and UserN were just attempts to solve the problem. It just added more registry entries :(

Programs ihave used and tried to fix the problem, including Tweaking.com - Windows Repair (All in One)
http://www.mediafire.com/view/crca5xealsc435g/P4.bmp# (http://www.mediafire.com/view/crca5xealsc435g/P4.bmp#)
Yet i one software gave me somthing strange
http://www.mediafire.com/view/4cindd9a97o2non/RKreport_SCN_03292015_181722.txt (http://www.mediafire.com/view/4cindd9a97o2non/RKreport_SCN_03292015_181722.txt)
If possible,i would like to provide a solution within the next update or why not in this forum.I would rather not re-install my OS,reset SAM or anything that will affect any user accounts. And if at all possible, make a boot cd for Tweaking.com - Windows Repair (All in One),saved me a lot of trouble while on OS and would fiind it very usefull to fix the problems that prevent actual booting of OS.

While I can see you have XP 32bit you haven't said which version.
I've found these ISO downloads from which you can make a bootable disk, although I cannot vouch for them as I don't have a XP machine to try them out on - Shane may have a source for the appropriate ISO but he won't be back until Monday if you want to wait until then.
You can use ImgBurn to create the bootable disk and then do a repair install.
Pre-requisites - http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/917964
http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/windows-xp-home-edition-sp3-free-download/

http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
With an original XP CD you can perform a sfc /scannow but I don't think you can get into a bootable ISO to extract the I386 folder.

-
Here is the info you required. But i doubt it is of any use unless using XP cd which i wanna avoid.I tried to find the my windows version on net and tried to make a bootable USB with Windows and My Drivers, not a custom made OS, and got a big bad virus i removed very hard. You might refer to the windows cd Repair(R).Other solutions i have in mind its hiren's boot cd (HBCD) or ultimate boot cd (UBCD).I tried sfc /scannow,keeps asking me for the CD which i dont posses as i had my OS pre-installed on my laptop,so I recieved no OS cd for it.Tried the OS you suggested,2 didnt even copied with rufus so i used D-Tools,sfc /scannow rejected them all :(.
And about the *.iso file,i refered to a Tweaking.com.iso.That would be great.

Should I use AIDA for more info ?
-
I don't know if Shane has a portable WR version, but as you can get in via CTRL+ALT+DELETE have you tried a chkdsk /r from the command prompt ?
-
go to device manager; uninstall the display drivers...
* only reboot the machine at this point...
if no luck, search google, download "what changed" and run it.
if no luck, chk msconfig too, often sth their should not be thier,
if no luck, download hijack this too, it useful for this type of things.
XP users in China are using 360, it works quite well actually. probably try this first.
login to http://devid.info and download and run the program to see if drivers need updating, good site and free.
good luck

Wellt he reason the welcome screen is blank is because it isnt seeing any users to list. Just like it didnt show any users in the cmd.exe screen shots you posted.
Yet you where able to log into a user account fine when you did it manually.
So the way the welcome screen and the others work is by pulling the user account info from the windows api or user list. But when you log into windows it doesnt look at that list instead it looks at the sam account information on the system, so thats why it was able to login just fine.
So we need to track down what is keeping that list from being pulled. Do me a fav and grab my tech toolbox,
http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/tweaking_com_technicians_toolbox.html
I have a built in user manager in it that I made that pulls the user account info from the adsi in the system. Let me know if it is able to pull the users or not. If not then I have an idea of where we need to start :-)

Sry it took me soo long,i had been busy.
I tried Chkdsk /r , all clean on scheduled scan but while in OS it detects something and ask for a scheduled scan.Very strange.
http://www.mediafire.com/view/fgqo6d1mzcec8d3/A.bmp# (http://www.mediafire.com/view/fgqo6d1mzcec8d3/A.bmp#)
Msconfig no use(it a startup manager basically).
Hijack this is just as MBAM.Only that it is specialized in ransomware and Browser Viruses.Instead use Hitman Pro :)
I have all drivers up-to-date because of ASC Driver booster 2.2;
I reinstalled display drivers,nothing happened.
Technican toolbox.Verry cool tools but manage users and windows groups displays no users or groups
http://www.mediafire.com/view/4pndbpe829bv2vp/B.bmp# (http://www.mediafire.com/view/4pndbpe829bv2vp/B.bmp#)
Also I noticed another problem with my system i will forward in another topic. If you need i will provide you with a Remote assistence file to see this problem can be worked arround.Of course i will password it and make it expre within 1 day, just to prevent hijacking.

You can post the full chkdsk report from Event Viewer by clicking on Copy/Copy details as text in the lower right pane then right click in the Reply box and select Paste.
The other thing could be related so just post that in this thread.
-
The user information is stored in the registry and the core built in tools dont see them and the API my program calls isnt seeing them either.
chkdsk showed that there was file system errors, if part of the registry was on a messed up section then the registry could be corrupt and would explain what is going on.
I am curious, what happens if you try to add a new user account?
Shane
-
I dont believe its a registry error,i had my registry backed up before this strange thing occured. And if try to add a new account,it will go ghost, and the only way to acces it would be to change the welcome screen to clasic, enter account information, and login and would work. But the account isnt hidden, isnt the orginal user,i unchecked dont show the last user logged on.
Here is the full CHKDSK report. If I schedule on boot it would be blank.
http://www.mediafire.com/view/8tzy18c191plm91/chkdsk_report.txt (http://www.mediafire.com/view/8tzy18c191plm91/chkdsk_report.txt)
-
That was a read-only mode report - you need to execute a chkdsk /r which will check the HDD for bad sectors and repair as it scans.
-
I tried Chkdsk /r even chkdsk /f .No filles detected.Pls read above before posting
-
The chkdsk in read-only mode had found file corruption which was why it said it was unable to continue.
You can post the output of a chkdsk /r as I've described in Reply #7.
If you have a XP CD you can also run a sfc /scannow as already suggested http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
-
I cant run sfc /scannow because it requires the original CD.I tried to work around it by making bootable win USB based on the images suggested above. It will ask me for orginal CD which ufourtunately i don not posses.
-
As you are unable to repair the volume, perhaps the machine has a Recovery partition so that you can factory reset, but first you need to find the condition of the HDD.
Download the first Trial/Free Version for HD Sentinel to see what the Overview gives for your HDD http://www.hdsentinel.com/download.php
Uninstalling it after use will stop the clock on the trial period so that you can use it again later if need be.
-
So what happens when you open a cmd.exe window and put in, can you post a screen shot of what it says?
chkdsk c: /r
Normally it should say that it cant fix the file system while it is in use and would you like to schedule it for next boot, then you hit Y and then reboot and the scan should start before windows starts.

What about my question?
So what happens when you open a cmd.exe window and put in, can you post a screen shot of what it says?
chkdsk c: /r
Normally it should say that it cant fix the file system while it is in use and would you like to schedule it for next boot, then you hit Y and then reboot and the scan should start before windows starts.
Shane
-
Indeed.Thats the behaviour but i don't get it.Why would the Chkdsk before winows say everything is fine while the one after booting windows say something is messed up.Chkdsk Boot Scan contradicts Chkdsk OS.Wtf?
-
Does the chkdsk /r complete and what does it report ?
-
Should have mentioned were Chkdsk /f /r makes a log fille.Control Panel->Administrative Tools->EventViewer->Right-Click on Application->Type Chkdsk in descripiton box->find next->Chkdsk log highlighted
Here is what it says:

Monday I have faculty courses from 12:00 AM to 8:00 PM.But i know realize making a remote assistence is quite difficult. The internet i use is provided by faculty at the students hostel.I have a double edged crossover cable connecting the router and the panel wich has the internet sockets.Given this fact,i doubt you can connect remotely to my laptop, but still worth a shot.I'm available after 8:00 PM.Should I download TeamViewer by then or just simply send you an Remote Asssistence Invitation File?
-
Today is really busy for me as well, so we will have to play it by ear. We will use teamviewer and see how it goes.
Shoot me an email and we will talk there :-)

For other users reading this who need to find a fix.
The problem was the local user and groups, or the user management in the control panel or even the ADSI code programs use to pull the user accounts would all return nothing.
This is because this is another part of Windows where if there is an error of any kind it simply bombs out and doesn't list anything. Yet if you open a cmd.exe window and type in net user, it will list all the users just fine.
In this case the problem was in the registry.
If you go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SAM\SAM\Domains\Account\
You will see two sub registry keys, Users and Names.
So as an example you may see something like
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SAM\SAM\Domains\Account\Users\000001F4
then under Names the name that belongs to that key will point to it, in this case
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SAM\SAM\Domains\Account\Users\Names\Administrator
Which when you look at its value points to 1f4
So in this section there was more registry keys under Users then there was under Names (This should normally have the same number of items) There was also 2 Names registry keys that pointed to the same path.
Once I got rid of all the extra folders that didnt point to anything and got rid of the duplicates the user accounts started showing up fine again.
So the problem was all because of some extra registry keys being in those paths.

hi,
ccleaner and other registry fix programs do not touch these entries. Shane has suggested a simple fix, and you could access it easily to check those things.
Ccleaner registry fix sometimes aggressive cleaning deleting possible entries that are required for other programs. Pl be care while using.. You could opt application and general application cleaning but care should be when trying to delete registry ientries.
Create a system restore point and then you could restore if you want to undo the thing.
