In the past I've used Option 1 in http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html

Option 1 or Option 2, or other solutions that can be found on the internet, do not fix anything.

Installing  http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/ change something in the system or change something in the registry, or missing of entries, or anything else.
I uninstalled the application, but for a long time, I have some bad icons (Eg. Incorrect Icons
1."White"
or
2."FolderView"

Code: [Select]
.ISO
.BMP
.JPEG
.RTF
.JAR
.MXM
.TIFF
.TIF
and many other icons.
I could manually set C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll, but I do not want to do this manually for 100+ of icons, it is not a good idea.

The repair is to repair the icon cache, so if it becomes corrupt. The repair doesnt change any of the icons themselves, so if you have a program that messed with the icons of things this wont fix it since this is just clearing out the windows cache which can become corrupted.

If I had the repair messing with peoples icons and changing them to defaults I would have a lot of ticked off people.

Shane - I mean, that tool works, but it can not be the tool to fix default icon images (even if IrfanView reset)
I have to write a custom script ... for a specific problem with icons
IrfanView (default Image Viewer)

It probably works well for Vista,
does not work very well for Windows 7, probably need to modify the script ...
Here is described ...  also read comments http://www.opaquit.com/blog.en/default-windows-vista-icons-for-irfanview-images/
advanced repair method (script to register)
I use IrfanView version 4.38 (32-bit) (do not use the newer version - because it does not support Unicode !, but not only for this reason)
