General Computer Support / Re: Repairing Pavilion dv6-1230us
« on: May 15, 2016, 01:37:49 am »
I've never tried the portable version but have downloaded/installed on my two laptops and when you run it you will know it's running as you will be presented with its UI to work your way through the Options.

I have the Pro version on my other laptop (which is currently in for repair), but this is the free version I have on my secondary machine -

It would have been helpful if you had posted that the winsock reset cmd didn't work as a sfc /scannow run from an elevated cmd prompt or what had been recorded in Event Viewer, may have helped with other suggestions that could have negated the need to reinstall and all that entailed.

The program needs to be run within Windows on the affected machine and not as a block repair for a number of machines.

Prior to running the main repairs, a registry back up is done which would be impossible if it had to encompass all of the machines on the network from a single installation of the program.

If the Pre-Scan in Option 2 picked up corrupt Package Files - how would you know which machine they related to.

To show your appreciation for the program, you could purchase one copy and install the free version onto the other machines - this is something I've done for my two laptops.

It's definitely a habit that you should get into.

6429
Sorting the profiles out seems to have played a big part, but as to that new profile being created - perhaps a scan with a robust antimalware scanner may be prudent.

Infections can also take out restore points but in your case it may well have been because of the numerous programs you have used.

I don't primarily rely on restore points and create an external system image each month after the various updates.

The only chew I have with that is if it's two or three weeks after that I need to restore, is that I usually have a hell of a job getting Norton Security back up to date, but that's a small inconvenience to having a working system back again.

6430
I can't find anything specific on that sfc error, but you seem to be getting somewhere.

While you haven't gotten the error in this article, perhaps that change of profile may have also altered your Firefox one and perhaps this article may help.

6431
That's one way around it :)

You can decide if you want to install those if you can.

KB3139398 -  https://www.pcrisk.com/removal-guides/9807-locky-ransomware#a2

KB3110329 - Looks like an old one - https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3110329

KB3133977 - Probably best to stay clear of this one - http://beforeitsnews.com/opinion-liberal/2016/05/technology-microsoft-windows-update-kb3133977-is-deadly-2528214.html

KB3137061 - You probably don't need this one - https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3137061

I haven't been able to update this Win 7 laptop yet, although my other one updated without any problems.

Unfortunately, I can't check that one as I've just put it in this morning to be checked out following a number of Display driver stopped responding and recovered errors with it blue screening after the last one.

Give me a few while I Google them to see their import.

6434
Just try them later - which ones were they ?

6435
I've only received the one for your post.

I've never lost any restore points using Windows own.

6436
I suppose you could go back to the CBS logs, check the date and time stamps then delete back to the first one of those you ran.

That cmd I posted may then pick that one up for you.....

6437
I only ever use Windows own defrag and that of a couple I've tried is the only one to achieve 0% fragmentation.

Not sure what the registry backups will give you back, but you could give them a try.

6438
While it's known that a 3rd party defrag program can wipe out any created restore points, I've never heard of one preventing new ones from being created - or affecting a browser.

What did you use to defrag ?

Check Event Viewer for any related VSS errors as well as checking to see that Volume Shadow Copy can be started in services.msc by clicking on it then on Start in the upper left pane.

Run a command prompt as an admin and see what a sfc /scannow has to report.

If it reports it is unable to repair some files then download and run SFCFix.exe which will give a more concise report and may even fix the files that sfc was unable to.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/sfcfix.html

6439
If you ran a sfc /scannow twice before the chkdsk and the first one did the repairs required, then the chkdsk will have found nothing to repair and the CBS log which that cmd will pick up may also come up clean because of that.

6440
To read the chkdsk report, go into Event Viewer and when it has read the data, expand Windows Logs - click on the name Application/Action/Find and in the Find box type chkdsk or wininit and press enter.

Cancel the Find box and read the report in the scrollable window.

To read the CBS log, from an admin cmd prompt enter or copy & paste this cmd -

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This will put an icon onto the desktop which when double clicked will open the CBS log into Notepad, reporting what it has found and repaired.

MBAM seems to be quite heavy on resources as well and it's possible there could be a conflict between Bullguard and MBAM as each could be scanning the other.

Just contact Bullguard and tell them it is slowing your machine to a crawl and that you will have to uninstall it and could you please have a refund for the remaining time on the licence.

When you turned on Verbosestatus, does it give you shutting down messages ?

Have you considered returning the dongle to see if it can be exchanged for something else and did you uncheck those Power management boxes ?

6443
You only need the Miniport adapter if you are using a VPN.

To get rid of it as it can cause problems otherwise, open a cmd prompt as an admin and enter this cmd -

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=disallow

and to reinstate it, change the disallow to allow.

To disable Selective Suspend go into Device Manager - expand Network adapters - right click on the wireless adapter - select Properties then under the Power Management tab uncheck the box to Allow this computer to turn off the device to save power.

Also do the same for each USB Root Hub under Universal Serial Bus Controllers and then see if it makes any difference to the shutdown.

Have you disabled the verbosestatus to see if that also makes any difference ?

I'll be shooting off for a while as I need to run a couple of memory tests to see if they are contributing to a graphics BSOD I've been getting.

6444
You haven't said if this only started to occur after installing the adapter.

Why do you need it to speak to you - that's a new one on me :)

Try disabling that to see if the shutdown is more smooth.

6445
If it has only started hanging since you fitted the adapter, then yes, it would be prime suspect for me.

General Computer Support / Re: Registry Compact (SSD)
« on: May 10, 2016, 12:54:24 am »
To have Disk Cleanup check the WinSxS folder in Win 7 for obsolete updates, the easiest way is to go Start - type disk cleanup - right click on Disk Cleanup and select Run as administrator, but it is dependent upon having an update released in October 2013.

No, it's more about disk space but I've gotten into the habit of running Winmend after uninstalling a program which does leave a gap in the registry when using a 3rd party uninstaller.

I'll also run it after the monthly run of Disk Cleanup and before I defrag - sometimes the % can be high and other times not after the removal of old updates.

6448
Does it do the same in a clean boot as it may be one of the Startup items or non-MS services not shutting down properly.

What USB devices do you have connected ?

You can turn off Selective Suspend for those by right clicking on them in Device Manager, select Properties and under the Power Management tab, uncheck the box to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Can you give us a link to the MS Fixit you tried ?
