Title: Catastrophic failure 0x8000FFFF, possibly caused by running Tweaking.com
Post by: sptilton on November 22, 2014, 06:47:47 pm
I ran the Tweaking.com Window Repair all in one (tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio_ setup.exe) on Nov 17,2014 to hopefully fix a Windows update problem (see KB2884256 update fails, Dexcom driver install fails thread). Today when I tried to run  a computer backup it failed (see attached photos). I tried a system restore to Nov 15. That failed for the same reason (see photo), shadow copies could not be created . I then did a system restore using the repair feature of the Windows installation  disk. That worked, and I was then able to  do a proper backup. Do you have any ideas of what happened?

The error shows that the volume shadow copy service isnt working properly. You only get that problem after running the windows repair?

Never seen VSS have problems afterward, in fact it has fixed vss more times than I can count. So I am curious to what is happening there.

The problem occurred before running the Windows Repair. Windows Repair was used to fix the problem by allowing me to do a System Restore using the CD. Backup and System Restore would not work from the hard drive. The only things I could think of that might have changed the system settings or registry since the last update was running Tweaking.com and  some Windows updates. The updates that disappeared after the System Restore have been reinstalled. Backup is operating properly, thus eliminating the updates as a cause.  Attached is some info from the Event Log. Does the log info provide any clues?

Thanks

Does the blue Online help link give a why and possible solutions ?

Unfortunately I forgot what the blue screen said, but it did not help. The problem was fixed by doing a System Restore from the Windows Installation CD. I do not know what caused the problem. It would be nice to know what  caused it so I can avoid doing it again.

The blue Online link I was referring to is what you get when you highlight an error in Event Viewer - apologies - was thinking you'd obtained the error from Event Viewer.

The error boxes in the attachments of post one popped up when I tried to do a Backup or System restore. I am not sure where they came from.  I did look in the Event Viewer and check the blue links. The links said:

"Results for: Microsoft Product: Windows Operating System; Version:
6.0.6002.18005; Event ID: 12349; Event Source: VSS;

No results were found for your query"

The Event ID was different for each error, but otherwise the statements were the same.
There is a summary of Event Viewer results in the attachment to post three (Backup_Restore_Errors.txt).

After re-reading that attachment, this article could help should the problem reoccur https://www.safebackup.com/faq/content/5/117/en/volume-shadow-copy-service-vss-troubleshooting.html

Thanks for the article. If the problem occurs again I will try those techniques. At this time, I do not want to try to recreate the problem to test fixes.  The repair section of the Windows install CD did get things back to normal.  However, it would be nice to know what caused the problems.

The next time you get a blue screen use the WhoCrashed program
http://www.resplendence.com/download/whocrashedSetup.exe

It will tell you what most likely caused the blue screen and that can point us in the right direction

I've seen BlueScreenView used on another forum and its report seemed to be more distinct and they also have a program for when programs hang, which could be handy. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
