Title: Registry Backup & Windows Reliabiity Monitor
Post by: SA Jack on March 28, 2013, 06:27:15 am
Hi Shane:
I've been using Registry Backup since it first came out, and have believed it has been running fine, with very few exceptions generally associated with VSS not loading correctly.  However, in reading an article the other day about Windows Reliability Monitor and the info in provides; I though I'd take a look since I hadn't worked with it for some time.  I was surprised to see that My usual score of 10 on the monitoring report has now dropped down to 1 or 2, and the one constant nearly every day is that it reports a critical application error associated with Registry Backup as "Stopped Working".  I frequently check the 4 backups I maintain and check for file size and folder structure consistency.  With very few exceptions (again VSS loading issues I'm sure), everything looks great.  Do you have any thought as to why this error is being reported in Windows and if there's anything I can do to prevent it, or provide to you for further information.

Thanks /Shane.   -Jack

I had another user report that the reg backup was crashing when running at startup and set to run hidden. Yet runs fine when ran normally, and even though it is crashes it is making the backups first.

So far I have been able to tell that it is only crashes when it is done with the backup and trying to close itself.

Do you have yours set to run at startup and hidden? And are the backups also still being made?

Thanks for the prompt reply Shane.

Attached are my Reg Backup settings.  Run normally.  Delete backups older than 3-days, and keep no more than 4.

In Task Scheduler the program is scheduled to run @ 6:00 AM every morning, and to wake the computer from sleep.

If you need any additional info, let me know.  Thanks again.  -Jack

Do the backups finish even though it is crashing?

This will tell me if it is crashing when it is trying to close itself.

Yes (see attached).  I've not seen a date where a registry backup file did not exist.  And only on very rare occasions is the backup significantly smaller than usual, and that's because of a VSS error resulting in only my user account being backed up.

Hope this helps.  -Jack

OK so it is when the backup is done and it is closing itself.

Does it crash if you do it manually and then close it?

Also in the shut down I have it write to ini file "DidCloseProperly"

If it doesnt it asks if you want to use fallback mode next time.

If when you run it, after it crashed and it doesnt ask that then I know where the problem is.

I have code right after that and the last thing ran before it closes to unload all the controls on the form.

What is really odd is I have 0 crashes on my system and I have it set to run at startup every day.
