Title: Fix DVD/CD no disc in drive error message ~ after trying to format with windows
Post by: Rick on March 05, 2015, 11:59:44 am
Ideas?

What happened?

Tried to format a 4.7g DVD using win7, it failed and now the DVD is unreadable in any system.

How to fix this issue?

Event Log says \dev\CdRom0 has a Bad Block
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930405/

error message; Media in CD/DVD drive is not readable (ASUS DVD-E818A7TG
its a sony cd-r disk

If true, then no format disk options should appear in pre-formated disks MSFT

its not related to
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-hardware/no-cddvd-rom-drive-found-windows-8/1a780b2a-64df-4f0d-b6e0-380d3784d3f7

Further Knowledge to be assesed
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/format-cd-dvd#1TC=windows-vista

Will try these;
http://burners.burn4free.com/sony-optiarc/optiarc-ad-7560a.htm

Go to the drive makers web site and see if there is a firmware update for the drive -or- if a burning operation
in my case : http://www.sony-optiarc.us/support/downloads/dvdrwseries.html

Change the DVD/CD region to none?
remove/replace cdrom.sys?
Check the capabilities?

Dear MSFT, please fix your software to fix DVD-r that read as not formatted in your systems, and then over write the Sony Formatted versions...

cd/dvd been on market for 20 years, why the nonsense?

You said format a DVD. Was it a DVD-rw disk or just a DVD-r?

If a DVD-R has already had stuff burned to it you will not be able to format it as data cannot be removed from it.

Was the disk blank or used prior to the format ?

I only use -Rs when I need to use a DVD.

It was new out of the box...

-r are limited to usage...
Be warned, stop using -r's

-Rs are fine for use as  bootable disks - all mine are, but if Windows requires the DVD to be formatted first as they need to be when using them for system images, Windows will do that for you when following the prompts.

I tried to format a DVD from the command prompt with the command format e: and I think it ID'd the disk as UDF and I had to specify a path ?? - gave up on it.

You cant format a dvd-r because those disks can only be written to once. Thats why the -rw stands for rewritable and can be written to over and over.

Hi, Shane
But whenever i insert a bland cd or dvd, a message pops up to say how i want to treat the said cd or dvd. The options are pendrive or as a written disc media. If i select, pendrive, then i just can use the cd r or dvd r as a pendrive, where you could add or delete file as normally as in pendrive in the CD thus selected. I tested and i was able to delete the contents in cd as in pendrive.
If i select the 2nd option, then it is only for writing once as in every dvd or cd r. I think that this option is available from xp onwards.
am I correct, Shane. One more point. You could not revert the change, in that you cannot make it burn then if you select it as pen drive.

When you want to burn something to a DVD in Windows, if anything needs doing to the disk before hand, Windows will tell you such as if you use DVDs for system images, it tells you the disk needs to be formatted first, but by following the prompts, Windows will do this for you.

Is there any reason why you want to format a DVD ?

not really, but the systems says to so can use the dvd

here is the Laptop DVD giving the trouble ; photo attached
therefore, it makes no sense why it did not work unless the system drivers were changed...
I re-installed the DVD bios, will test it later
