Title: Strange .mp3 problem
Post by: Roy Whitethread on August 14, 2015, 05:22:33 am
Previously I have downloaded hundreds of .mp3 files, played them in Winamp, then used mp3Direct Cut to get rid of silences at the beginning and end of the files. I then saved the edited files, adding the figure 1 to the song title to distinguish it from the original, then played them again with Winamp to check they were ok, and finally deleted the original files, deleted the figure 1 from the title of the edited files, and then cut and pasted them to the folders I wanted them in. Now when I try to play the edited files I can't unless I first take ownership of them. I have never had this problem before, and if someone can give me a solution I would be very grateful.

Running the Tweaking.com repair tool solved the problem on Windows 10, but not on Windows 7.

I hope to hear from anyone about a solution.

Thanks and regards, Roy

Is the Win 10 WR log that you posted in your other thread the same one that fixed your .mp3 problem ?

If it is, can you post the WR log for Win 7 and then Shane will probably be able to spot what was fixed for Win 10 but not for Win 7.

Yes it is the same one.

Several of the WR log files for Win 7 are attached, and I await further advice. (If you need any other log for the Win 7 WR please let me know).

Shane is the best one to analyse the WR log files so I would wait for his return on Monday.

If Win 10 is still playing up, have you considered reverting and then using the Upgrade option with the ISO.

I think Win10 has had some updates, but not sure if they are for Edge.

I took ownership of the Winamp and mp3DirectCut Program files, then opened Properties for both and made sure Users and Administrators had full control, and that solved the mp3 problem in Win 7.

Program files is normally locked down by default in vista, 7 and so on.

It is normally best to save your files in your my documents folder or anywhere under your profile. That is the one spot Windows, by default, gives the current user full control.

Is there a reason you are keeping the files inside the program files folder?

Shane, firstly the problem has returned, so my "fix" only worked for a very short time. Secondly, I do not keep the .mp3 files I wish to edit in program files, I keep them in a subfolder of Documents. When I save downloaded .mp3 files to that folder I have no problem playing them with Winamp, but the problem occurs when I edit the files with mp3DirectCut, and I cannot then play them unless I take ownership of them first.

Further advice would be appreciated.

Thanks and regards, Roy

I ran the latest version of WR with Windows 7 running, and that solved the problem, hopefully for good this time.

sounds like file permission's

and if you say that the recent wr 3.4.2 fixed it i believe it is because of repair number 2.

but shane is right when he stated this

What i'm curious though is what the file's permissions were before the repair ran.

As far as I recall the permissions for Administrators and Users were full control.

Julian, I didn't investigate the Advanced pane of Properties, instead I used the Take Ownership utility, as mentioned previously.
