Title: Windows update KB2976978 will not install
Post by: feh50 on September 04, 2015, 10:14:20 am
This one update (lets you install windows 10) will not update. i have searched many of the windows forums and Microsoft has made some feeble efforts to replace the update. I have done the normal sfc and dism with no success. The update  goes from optional to necessary and back again. i thought i could just manually install windows 10 and do without this update but i get another error "Modern Setup Host has stopped working" and the update quits at that point and you are back to square A. HELP!!!

When you perform a clean boot, under the Services tab you must check the box to Hide all Microsoft services before you hit he Disable all button.

Not doing that is the only reason I can think as to why the machine should lock up during that procedure.

While Windows Repair has had a lot of success in dealing with failed Win 10 installs, that's the first I've seen of this reported error, so not sure what WR will make of it - but it would still be worth running the fixes to see, as the article says that as yet - MS haven't come up with an answer.

Before running anything that will change the registry, I always create a full external system image.

Everything came back up after stopping services this time; but still same problem: "Modern Setup Host has stopped working" and the install aborts at this point

Run Windows Repair and if that doesn't resolve, Shane will be back soon to take it from there.

Have you tried booting up into Safe Mode first before running WR ?

I don't know why WR fails to run but can you try the update again and after it has failed, go into Event Viewer and post the events with the immediate date and time stamps.

While you haven't said which Windows version you are running, from what you've posted about using the dism cmds, I assume you are using Win 8.1 ?

This article will show you how to access Event Viewer https://www.winhelp.us/event-viewer-in-windows.html

When the window comes up with Critical, Errors etc. click on Errors then on Show All Instances of This Event in the lower right pane.

When they come up you can click on the relevant events which will give a brief description in the lower pane and clicking on the blue online help link may give more info.

With each event highlighted you can click on Copy/Copy details as text in the lower right pane then right click in the reply box and select Paste.

You can also repeat that procedure after trying to run WR.

If you have any Critical listed other than Event 41, do the same with those but mark them as Critical.

This should give Shane or Julian more to go on if I'm unable to help.

It's possible the DistributedCOM event relates to those MBAM Chameleon events.

I can't remember if Chameleon is part of MBAM or whether it's a separate install.

Either way, if you have it installed then I would advise uninstalling it as it, or its corrupted remnants could be causing problems, even though it would be isolated in Safe Mode, but it could disrupt Windows Updates.

I don't know what that vdrLfEJB.sys refers to and neither does Google.

Is there any kind of error message or anything that pops up when you try to run my program?

your program runs good, i have run in safe mode and not just to see if any difference and cannot tell if there is any.
i don't looks at each individual  part as it runs, so not sure how to answer your question.

10 Combined Problems were found with the packages files, these files need to be replaced (These mainly only effect installing Windows Updates.)
The SFC (System File Checker) doesn't scan and replace some of these files, so you may need to replace them manually.

THESE FILES DO NOT KEEP THE REPAIRS FROM WORKING; YOU MAY STILL RUN THE REPAIRS IN THE PROGRAM.

If you need help in replacing these files, post on the Forums at Tweaking.com for help.

PS---sorry for the delayed response i have been out of pocket somewhat. The missing files are the ones that won't install when the update pops up

Well crap, I cant find those files because it was a bad update that MS pulled and updated.

So the files are v6.3.5.3 of that update, when I went and grabbed the update from MS they have updated it to 6.3.11.3

I don't suppose your restore points would go back to before you first tried this update, but can you check.

Reliability history could have recorded its failure to give you a date of its first fail.

As this update has been updated, then reverting the original errors and then retrying could help.

Since those files are outdated they need to be removed. Under this registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages

Is the list of the files in the packages folder. Find those files in there and delete them. You will have to right click on the key and go to permissions and take owner ship to do it. I should really write a tool to do this to make it easier.

Then once they are out of that registry location the updates will stop looking at them.

Just wondering if you could override that by activating the hidden admin account -

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/9650-built-administrator-account-enable-disable-windows-8-a.html

Once done, successful or not, remember to disable it.

Same thing again, apparently the ones I deleted came back and again I could delete all but two

UPDATE !!!!!!! IT INSTALLED. I JUST DECIDED TO CHECK TO SEE IF IT WOULD INSTALL AND AMAZINGLY IT DID ---HAVE NO CLUE WHY IT WOULDN'T INSTALL YESTERDAY WHEN I DELETED THE FILES FROM THE REGISTRY

HOWEVER!!!!!! Even though the windows update installed i still have another problem (thought they were tied together) and i might need to start another post. I immediately tried to install the windows 10 (from USB) and i got the same message as before "Modern Setup Host has stopped working"

keep the bat file on the desktop the scripts go in the power shell folder one in my documents and one in Windows I left instructions plus it will create a log in the directory of the batch file. Upload that log I'll tell you your issue
