Title: Problems with starting Peerblock etc
Post by: Jeroen on November 07, 2012, 09:16:34 am
So Peerblock has always worked for me, I have it on my notebook for over 2 years now, however three days ago I got this message:

One or more of the following Windows Services are not running:

- Base filtering engine
- IPsec Policy Agent
- IKE and AuthIP IPsec keyring modules

What I did:

Run services as administrator -> tried to start Base filtering engine, but get the message: "Cannot start Base Filtering Engine on     local computer. Error 5: access denied.

But since IPsec Policy agent and the other program mentioned above are dependable from BFE, I cannot start them either. So after this I started Malwarebytes to scan for any malware. It found 1 specific problem so I deleted it. After that I started Avast ( and did a fast system scan and although I had several blocking messages from avast itself, it didn't find anything unusual, so I repeated the first step (run services...), but with the exact same result.

Afterwards I did the Windows repair all-in-one and repeated the first step again but with the same result again.

Should I be worried that I have a virus on my notebook or not? Or does anyone know how I can fix this problem?

Thanks.

My repair program would put back the BFE service if it was deleted. A lot of viruses remove the BFE. So if the system is still infected then that could be the problem.

Have you ran tdsskiller.exe and malwarebytes yet?

First of all: thanks for the quick reply.

I have tested malwarebytes, as I mentioned, not tdsskiller.exe. I will give this a try right away.

Combofix.exe may be the next tool to run if tdsskiller doesnt find anything.

Just make a backup first as combofix is very good at what it does, but it is all automated and you never know if something good gets killed

Party!  I don't know what it was but combofix did the trick!

I do know it must of been something nasty because my computer froze during the combofix-scan, but after I rebooted everything seemed to be normal again. Peerblock, Base Filtering Engine, ... etc are working again.

Thanks a lot! I'd say I'll buy you a Belgian beer, but I guess my thanks will have to do it for now.  :cheesy:

To bad I could never get paid in good cigars lol

Since your all set I will lock this thread.

Also remember to always keep your java and flash up to date. That is how a lot of viruses get in from infected sites or ads.

And as always...
If your happy with my work. Then all I ask in return is you simply let others know about my site and programs. I help with anything computer or network related :-)
Also always feel free to make a post in the feedback forum.
