While Windows Update doesn't work in Safe Mode with Networking, can you try the direct download in that mode should it be McAfee that is blocking.

If that doesn't do it then open a command prompt as an admin and copy & paste these commands where they will auto run.

If any seem to hang then press enter.

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

While I've had mine running at 64C during a Furmark GPU stress test for ~20mins and nothing else, it didn't seem to have any adverse effects - but as you are getting an improvement with the external fan running, then download Speedfan and let it look after your fan speeds as continually running it at 140F (60C) will shorten the CPU/GPU's life.

9279
That's always the final solution - good luck

Are you using the free or the Premium version of MBAM ?

The paid for version has an option for Automatic Scheduling and may be worth looking at its default setting. https://www.malwarebytes.org/support/guides/mbam/AutomatedScheduling.html

140F = 60C and 120F is ~49C

The HDD temp is fine and the CPU is on the usually recommended max for long periods but CPUs can operate at much higher temps, although prolonged will result in damage.

Ideally 45C - 55C are the CPU temps you should be aiming for.

Speedfan is a program that regulates the speed of the fan so give that a try. http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/speedfan.html

Once installed, it runs in the background and you can delete the System info icon that appears on the desktop.

I've never heard of HWMonitor not running.

Try the free version of Speccy http://filehippo.com/download_speccy

You would have HWMonitor to prove it was overheating under normal conditions - that's if you've installed it as you have yet to answer my repeated requests as to whether it does confirm overheating.

If there's no physical damage to the case then their claim of damage would be groundless and checking for any malware can easily be done.

You said earlier that you would have to send it back when done - so are you on a Lease scheme ?

If this is the case then they are responsible for any hardware repairs unless you have a contract that says different.

Can you confirm if HWMonitor is showing high temps when you don't have the fan blowing on it ?

Have you blown the vents out as well as over the keyboard with a can of compressed air ?

Some laptops cooling is done through the keys.

While they are called laptops, they should only be used on a flat surface so the underside air intake doesn't get blocked or draws in fluff etc.

How old is the laptop because thermal paste can need renewing and is beyond the control of the user.

If it is overheating then you should take it back because if it does knack the CPU/motherboard, then you could face the cost of repair because of negligence in not reporting the fault.

Do the programs still hang in Safe Mode with Networking ?

Open a command prompt as an admin by going Start - type cmd.exe - right click on cmd and select Run as administrator - accept the UAC then type sfc /scannow and press enter to see what that reports.

If that reports no integrity violations then work your way through http://pcerrorpedia.com/how-to-resolve-windows-7-not-responding-message/ and let us know how you get on.

Is it needed if we found the solution already?

It was because you said the computer refuses to do much that I suggested Safe Mode with Networking.

Has HWMonitor confirmed your temps are getting that high to cause freezes ?

It may be time to renew the thermal paste on the CPU if they are, as prolonged overheating can cause serious damage.

As you are able to connect in Safe Mode with Networking there's no need to post your ipconfig /all.

I don't know what MSF32 is but create a restore point then right click on MSF32 and select Uninstall then click on Action/Scan for hardware changes - although I don't think it is relevant to connectivity as you can connect in Safe Mode with Networking unless it's causing an IRQ conflict in Normal mode where it would be loaded.

If its a missing driver, then Windows will reinstate it.

When you can get a connection in Safe Mode with Networking but not in Normal mode, it's either your AV program, an infection or something in your Startup items in msconfig - I use Norton 360.

Can you do a manual check for updates for ESET - sometimes a buggy Definitions update can block connectivity.

If you don't have the free version of MBAM installed, boot up into Safe Mode with Networking and download and run it. https://www.malwarebytes.org/ - Decline the Pro version free trial.

If it's still a no go in Normal mode then perform a clean boot.

In a clean boot all your Startup items and non-MS services are disabled except your AV program as that will reinstate itself, so if you get a connection in the clean boot - it won't be ESET that's blocking but if you still cannot connect, that would normally point to your AV and a reinstall of it may be needed.

Re-enable ESET before checking for Definition updates and leave enabled for the clean boot.

Just looking at yours specs in your opening post - do you not have a wireless card fitted ?

Try running the program in Safe Mode with Networking as there will be limited drivers loaded then.

I've seen BlueScreenView used on another forum and its report seemed to be more distinct and they also have a program for when programs hang, which could be handy. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html

I'm still trying to find a download link that I trust for Windows Installer 5.0 which is for Win 7.

Did you download HWMonitor which will show your temps ?

Java Script is something else. http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/guides/java-and-javascript

I assumed when you unchecked the box to Allow in browsers it would do it for all.

To check if you still have Java enabled in Chrome, run a ping test from www.pingtest.net

It will tell you if you don't have Java installed/enabled and the packet test will fail.

If you were just running the free version of MBAM then you can use mbam-clean.exe to remove it or any residue and then reinstall to see if you get the same conflict/BSOD.

https://helpdesk.malwarebytes.org/hc/en-us/articles/201861636-How-do-I-uninstall-Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware-

9293
Thanks for the  Java tip. I have both uninstalled old and installed new Java. However both took a rather long time. Is that usual? AND are you suggesting that a BSOD could be due to this seemingly minor faux pas on my behalf?

No, it's just that leaving older versions on your computer can leave it vulnerable.

When I update Java it can sometimes take a while before the install bar starts to move for me.

While I have Java installed, because of it being prone to exploits I have it disabled in browsers which you can do if not usually needed, by right clicking on the coffee cup in All Control Panel Items - Open - then under the Security tab uncheck the box to Allow in browsers - Apply - then follow the prompts.

I was going to leave your latest BSOD error to Shane but you probably resolved the previous +75bc0 error by updating your drivers.

There is a possibility of compatibility between MBAM and McAfee of which the steps in this article may address. https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/107694-malwarebytes-mcafee-security-center/

9294
If you don't need Java v7 for any of the sites you use, then you should run Java's older version removal tool, but if you still need v7 then you should update it to v7 u71.

OK - have you downloaded HWMonitor and what is it giving for your temps ?

If it's intermittent then it may not be overheating which is why I'd previously mentally discounted that - those type of freezes or even shutdowns in extreme cases tend to be more regular, but see how the monitoring goes.

9296
I think we need to get the Network sorted first, although I'm not sure how it managed to sync when you don't have an Internet connection.

The Timeout error could be because of a lack of connectivity.

As long as the clock is correct you don't need to have it sync'd for now and I don't think a few seconds would make any difference.

Which security programs do you have installed ?

Have you checked to see if you have a connection when booted up into Safe Mode with Networking ?

Have you been into Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices and checked for any yellow alerts, red crosses or any downward pointing black arrows ?

Are there also any Unknown Devices entries ?

You haven't said what you are using to post, but are you able to open a command prompt on the affected computer and enter ipconfig /all after wiring it up and then copy the output to the reply box.

To copy the command window output, right click in the text area and click on Select all then press enter - you can then paste that into a Notepad or Wordpad doc and copy it across using either an USB stick or CD/DVD.

If the laptop belongs to the school, how come you had to pay for the replacement HDD ?

HWMonitor will show the temps which you can leave running http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/hwmonitor.html

Only click on the brown Download@Authors Site (32 bit) button in the top window.

Yes, I've had a couple off TalkTalk like that but their D-Link 3780 which I have now is spot on - although when it gets to about 21 or 22 days synced - it starts counting backwards

I was going to wait the last one out to see what it would do when it got to zero but we had a power cut.

@ Samson - While a decent router will have its own firewall, with the broadband connection being unprotected it wouldn't matter which router you are using.

With it being open and unprotected, it would available to anyone within range like they are where free WiFi is provided.

@ Gamzertruth - To prevent anyone from leeching your broadband you could hide the SSID in the router settings then use  http://www.7tutorials.com/how-connect-hidden-wireless-networks to connect your computer to it or just wire up to see if that makes any difference to your connection stability/speeds.

I'm a bit confused about this question of 4GB - you wouldn't normally get those sort of speeds on ADSL (at least not in the UK) - they are VDSL (Fibre) speeds.

It's quite possible your router could have become infected as WPA is quite an old encryption and is easily cracked, even when enabled.

Depending upon your devices, I would suggest you change that to Mixed WPA2/WPA-PSK and Enable it, but I think this would require a router password to be entered to connect to the SSID.

This would normally be on the router.

For the Network Authentication, you would need to contact your ISP as I don't know if changing the WEP encryption to Enabled would conflict with that - my ISP uses CHAP Network Authentication and the router's SSIDs are password protected.

BTW - no sign of any PM.

With an Open connection, anyone could come along and leech off your connection which could max out your bandwidth and cause disconnections.

This is similar to when you have multiple users in a household all streaming and gaming.

You can check if any strangers have been using your connection if your router has a DHCP Table or something similar where it lists the Mac addresses such as when a mobile phone connects.

Computers and the like have their own usernames and if any are listed that you don't recognize, then that will be a sign that someone has been stealing your bandwidth.

Your Upload speed seems unusually low and maxing this out can also affect the download speeds when gaming to the point of causing a disconnect.

It seems to me that you just have a crap ISP and the sooner you change - the better.

Are any of these able to provide you with a better and secure service http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Internet_service_providers_in_Saudi_Arabia
