Tweaking.com Support & Help / Re: Repair Reparse Points doesn't repair

Hi JPM,

Reading your post triggered an idea to delete these 2 missing folders and see what will happen. So I just did that and this problem is now solved.

I just want to report here what I did so that other people will be able to solve similar problem in case it happens to them:

1. I used the free software "Search Everything" to find "Recorded TV".
2. Found 3 instances: 3 folders -> "Recorded TV"; Shortcut folder "Recorded TV (1)"; Shortcut folder "Recorded TV (2)".
3. Right clicked on the 2 shortcut folders and deleted them.
3. Run the "Repair Reparse Points" in regular mode (not in safe mode) and found that this problem was cleared.
4. I still had though a problem with SWCUTemp, so I use "Search Everything" to find this folder, that indeed was also a shortcut folder.
5. I searched the internet and found that it was generated by a security program (FRST - Farbar Recovery Scan Tool) which I last used in 2015, so I figured out that it was not important. I right clicked on it and deleted it.
6. I ran again the "Repair Reparse Points" in regular mode (not in safe mode) and found that this problem was also cleared.
7. I then ran Tweaking.com in safe mode and did a full Pre-Scan. Could not find any problem. Steps 3 & 4 were also fine.
8. Last, just to confirm that the problem doesn't return via some ini file when windows start, I rebooted from safe mode to regular windows and re-ran the "Repair Reparse Points" which could not find any problem.

So the problem is solved. Thanks for instilling in me the courage to be bold and solve this problem manually.

Ron

Tweaking.com Support & Help / Repair Reparse Points doesn't repair
« on: November 11, 2018, 03:56:43 pm »
Hello,

For a long time I'm trying to unsuccessfully repair 2 reparse points errors. The last attempt was with v4.3.1 Pro Version (log enclosed). Major updates of windows have not removed these errors. I'm doing the repairs in safe mode while my Anti Virus (AVAST free) is inactive.

Everything else seems fine when I use weekly "Tweaking.com - Windows Repair 2018".

Is there anything that I can personally do to fix this annoying issue (such as manually fix the reparse points errors). Your guidance would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ron

Thanks Boggin,

I think that you indicated the general direction of the problem: that most likely the AV may be the problem. I'm not sure if I want to go through a clean removal of AVAST. First I'll try to completely deactivate it in Safe Mode without networking and see if this would solve the problems. I bet it won't as Avast is still lurking in the background even when it's completely deactivated.
If this would be unsuccessful, I'll try to search if these pesky reparse points missing directories can be fixed manually.
If both won't work then I'll consider uninstalling Avast.

I may take me some time but I'll report results here.

Thanks you so much, Ron

Hi Boggin,

As to the first question: I did not because I'm not so much concerned about manual backups, but rather about the daily automatic backups that the tweaking.com program does. For several years it did the job well without any notification but then, several months ago, I started to get these notifications almost every night. Even if I would try it in safe mode with networking, I may coincidentally stumble on a day without a problem so the diagnostic value of doing it is questionable. I'm just wondering why the program can't backup a "busy" file on certain days. Could it be that my Antivirus (Yes Avast) doesn't allow it? When I talking about Avast - I did switch to it from AVG about half a year ago.

As to the second question: Avast. I don't recall that I had these 2 issues when I was using AVG, but I have to admit that this is just a general impression/recollection.

Thanks for your reply

I guess these 2 minor issues really don't hurt, so I just tried to not pay attention to them, but they just won't go away for months, so it starts to bather me.

First: most days I get a message that registry/system backup could not be completed. I checked the last log (attached) and it shows that backing up "C:\Users\DefaultAppPool\ntuser.dat" failed because the file is in use. I guess this is the recurrent problem although I did not check the log over several failing days.

Second: In the pre-scan I have 2 reparse errors that reparse repair can't handle (log attached).

Are there any simple solutions to solve these 2 issues, or should I just "let it go" until an auto-upgrade to a newer version of windows may solve them?

My current version is:   Win 10 Pro Version 1709 OS Build 16299.431.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Boggin,

Thank you so much for your reply and the link provided. I believe the solution provided by DAC324 is doable and straight forward, but as they say later - what if it will create other problems that have not been described yet by anybody?  Since it is a minor problem I will get your advice and just ignore it until MS will come with a fix in one of their future updates (hopefully), or until (hopefully never) I'll need to restore health with DISM.

Thank you again and have a great weekend!

Good evening (here in Colorado),

There is no rush, but when you have time, can you please send me a script or instructions/links how to solve this corrupted file issue? I searched this folder in another computer to copy and replace it but could not find this file there.

Although it seems not crucial I would rather have all the backup files non corrupted on my laptop.

Thanks in advance,

Yaron

Same problem here (see attached files). Win 10 Pro Version 1511 Build 10586.494 (64-bit). Tweaking.com repair v3.97 Pro. Reparse Point repair worked well in the past. This is the first time I'm using the repair program after an In-Place update to the Win version above. Hope Shane would be able to solve the problem soon, but I'm not too worry since CHKDSK and SFC scans are OK.
