I have Win 8.
I'm trying to update some apps and go to Win 8.1
However when I try to update apps and try to go update to Win 8.1 I get the error 'Something went wrong. App could not be installed. Error 0x80070002'.
I ran the Tweaking repair (but without a 'clean boot').
I selected all repairs.
I still have the error, unfortunately.
Is there any advice on how to get rid of this error and be able to update again.
Thank you.
-
I've tried removing my antivirus and firewall and still it will not update.
-
As a test, create a new user account and login with that account and see if the app store starts working. Also when you ran my Windows Repair did you run all the repairs? And what version of the program did you use? I just put out v2.10.0 today and it can now be ran from safe mode.
Shane
-
I used version 10.0, the latest version.
How do I create new account?
If that doesn't work I'll try running all the repairs from Save mode, or the Clean boot, whichever one is easier.
Thank you.
-
Go to control panel and user accounts and you can create a new account there.
Shane
-
Hi.
There are different choices going to Control Panel/Create User Account - create an account and create a standard account.
Both places, when I try to create an account, it asks me for my email address. When I enter my email address, it comes back and says there is already an account with that email address.
Sorry but I can't create another user account unless there is some other method.
-
You could try again after creating a gmail account https://www.gmail.com/intl/en/mail/help/about.html
-
I created a 'local account'.
Is that good enough?
Also another stupid question - how do I logon to my new account?
I tried restart but it didn't ask me what account should be used.
Thanks.
-
And also how to get back from my local account to my main account.
Thank you.
-
When you create a new local account, when you reboot and come up to the login screen it should give you a choice of which account to log into.
Shane
-
When I start the computer it never asks for a login.
I have a local account now and when I started the computer this morning it booted up as normal.
There was never a choice of login accounts.
I'm in my 'normal' account, not my local account.
-
Ok try this, go to the desktop and right click on the start button (If you have 8.1 you should have the start button) then you will see a log off or restart option, you can try the log off option and see if it gives you the log in screen, or if there is a switch users option you can try that as well.
Shane
-
Thanks for the ideas, but
sorry, I have Win 8.0 so no Start button.
My choices are sleep, restart and shut down.
I tried restart but it never gives me a choice.
I'm trying to update to Win 8.1 but I can't, and I get the error code.
But I'll see if I can find some way to switch users.
This is a very aggravating error because it stops all my updates.
-
Could be worth running the Dism command in an elevated command prompt followed by a reboot.
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth
You could run this one first if you want - Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
-
I was able to create a local account but that failed on the same error when I tried to update an app.
I'm not sure if local acct's are allowed to update.

Running a sfc /scannow from the command prompt in admin mode may also find something to repair.
-
Thanks Boggin.
I tried both commands, restarted but unfortunately I get the same error.

I created a local account, logged onto it but I get the same error unfortunately.

There were three commands there - what about the sfc /scannow ?

I ran scannow and it said Window Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

in regedit, hkey_local_machine/software/Microsoft/windows/windowsnt/current version/profilelist/s-1-5-21 - etc.
There are two entiries.
One has profileimagepath c?users/g_m etc.
There is such a file. It exists.
The 2nd entry for profileimagePath has c:/Users/updatususer
This folder does not exist.
Should I create it or should this be something else?
Or does it matter? Is it important?
Thank you.
-
Perhaps this is significant: Security UserID="S-1-5-18" />
In regedit/profilelist s-1-5-18, profimagepath %systemroot%\system32\config\systemprofile

This article may help with Event ID 1508 http://kb.monitorware.com/kbeventdb-detail-id-6830.html although the elevated command is whoami /user without the /sid bit, but entering whoami /? will display this command's switches.

Thank you.
"SystemEventlog Source:Userenv Event ID:1508Full Description:Windows was unable to load the registry. This is often caused by insufficient memory or insufficient security rights. More Informations:From a newsgroup post: "These error logs indicate that the user profiles in your server are either corrupted, or are not properly configured. Suggestion 1: This can happen if some users’ ProfileImagePath registries are duplicated with other users' ProfileImagePath. To resolve the issue, perform the following steps: 1. Run "WHOAMI /USER /SID" to determine the users’ correct SID. If you do not have the whoami command tool, you can download and install it from the link below. Note: By default, it will install to the C:\Program files\Resource Kit folder. To run it, go to a command prompt and change the path to C:\Program Files\Resource Kit. Then type "whoami /USER /SID" (without quotes) and press Enter. It should display the current users’ name and SID. 2. Check the ProfileImagePath value under the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\. Note down this ProfileImagePath value. 3. Check the other ProfileList\ keys for matching ProfileImagePath values and deleted those keys. Note: Please make sure you have backed up the registry key before you delete them. 4. Test and see if the problem is fixed. Did you manually move your users' profiles to another drive? If you have moved the Documents and Settings folder, it will lead to the issue. Microsoft does not support moving the Documents and Settings folder in Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP to another drive. Suggestion 2: If the issue persists, I suggest that you create a new user and then copy the user profile. When copying, the following files should be excluded: - Ntuser.dat - Ntuser.dat.log - Ntuser.ini. "
The SID points to 'Test2' which I used when trying to create a 2nd account.
3. Check the other ProfileList\ keys for matching ProfileImagePath values and deleted those keys. "
I presume 'deleted' should be 'delete'.
I'm unsure what this all means.
1) I get the SID, which I've done.
2) I check the profile path.
3) If there are duplicates the same as 2) then delete them (doing a backup first)
I'll try it and see what happens but I should not be using 'test2' as my SID I believe because I only created it to test a 2nd account to find out if using a 2nd local account would solve the problem, and I only created it a couple days ago.
Thank you.
-
Unfortunately I didn't find any duplicate file paths. But there is a 2nd key in the SID Profile list S-1-5-21.
The profileImagepath is C:users/updatusUser. But that doesn't exist.
I have no memory of moving the Documents and Settings folder. Everything is all on drive C.
However I did partition derive C once, but I later removed that partition. I wonder if that somehow caused the problem.
-
How do I backup my registry?
I might try deleting the entry with updatusUser.
Thanks.

I deleted it but I still have the same problem. same error code.
This is frustrating.
-
The easiest way to back up your registry is to create a restore point, but don't make any further changes as Shane will now have a lot more to go on to find a resolution for you as this is now beyond my realms.
-
I tried running the Tweaking repair in safe mode but unfortunately I got the same error.
I backed up my registry and created a restore point.
-
I tried a Troubleshoot/Advanced Options from PC Settings/General/Advanced Startup
and I got this error:

Given the changes you've already made, unless Shane advises differently - it may be time for a repair install http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/26095-repair-install-windows-8-a.html

I don't have a Win 8 DVD/USB because Win 8 came pre-installed on my PC laptop.

Sorry for the late reply guys. Lots of posts to read through. My mother in law just past away this morning and I have been keeping my wife and daughters calm.
So I didnt have the time to read through all the posts, but a repair install is a good idea. But you will need a Windows 8.1 install disk to do it, which you can grab off the net. Do you have the cd or do you need a download link to it?

@ Shane - Very sorry to hear of your sad recent loss.
My condolences to you and your family.
@ GMO123 - Using the blue hyperlinks in the tutorial will take you from how to create a bootable ISO to the actual hyperlinks to download the relevant Win 8.0 ISO with a workaround to use a generic key if needed.
An alternative to the repair install is the Refresh or Reset but you could still need an install disk if it needs to replace missing files, but with an OEM machine that came with Win 8/8.1 - they will have a Recovery partition to factory reset the machine to an out of the box condition (for which you don't need an install disk), but you will need to back up your personal stuff as you would also need to do for the Refresh (as a safeguard) or the Reset and as this article explains, you will need to reinstall your desktop programs.
http://www.howtogeek.com/132428/everything-you-need-to-know-about-refreshing-and-resetting-your-windows-8-pc/
The hyperlinks in the article will take you to the How tos for the required operations if you need them.
