I am trying to fix my daughters laptop. The hard drive was going bad so she backed it up onto 3 CD's, then changed the hard drive and then installed the backup from the 3 CD's.

It didn't install properly or it didn't back up properly to begin with. So the computer works and is usable for the most part but it does have some issues. Mainly the Window Update no longer works at all. There are things that don't work because I am sure it needs patches and fixes.

I finally got into Microsoft support and 2 different times they remoted in and tried many things to fix it but could not. Is there any way to download a copy of the Windows 7 Home Premium from somewhere and just start over? I don't need to save anything and I do have the product key

General Computer Support / What should I use to open an .rar file?
« on: April 20, 2015, 05:49:27 pm »
I have looked at a couple of programs online and started the download process only to find that they were full of bloatware so I stopped it. Can anyone recommend a good program to open a .rar file that does not come with all the bloatware? Thanks, Joe

I like to have dropbox and skype running but I would like them to delay maybe a minute or two so it doesn't slow the statup. Is there a good way to do this?

My wife has a pretty new Lenovo Yoga II running windows 8. Either someone or a bot takes it over. It takes control of the mouse, highlights text moves around goes to different websites like wikipedia, you tube, Amazon and more. It has also been into the registry and I don't know what it's doing. It also opened and was in the mouse properties also.

It did it about a week ago and I ran malwarebytes, and superantispyware and Ccleanr in addition the the Kapersky anti virus running on it and it cleaned up a lot of stuff. It was OK for a while but now it just did it again. The laptop is unusable when this is going on.

I am concerned about security especially since my wife does banking and pays all our bills online. My wife does a lot of prison ministry here in San Diego, she suspects it is the government because they stop at nothing to prosecute these guys and they are in for serious offenses. (Don't know just putting it out there)

When the laptop is restarted it seems to be OK but I know it's not fixed.

Do you think I should do a factory reset to get rid of it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Joe

P.S. My wife took a video of it from her phone while it was doing this. Click on the link to view:

General Computer Support / Is my hard drive dying? [Solved]
« on: February 19, 2015, 08:24:48 pm »
Hi, I have a Toshiba Laptop Satellite P744 for about 3 years now, with windows 7. I keep having this recurring situation when I login. It does not happen all the time but seems to be increasing in frequency. Here is what happens:

When I login the bottom task bar is no longer translucent, the start menu and explorer windows are all different, not translucent. It looks to me more like XP.

Shortly after starting I get an error balloon pop up from the task bar saying: "Failed to connect to a windows service, windows could not connect to the system event notification service...etc" I have a screenshot of the entire message.

Then I get another error message pop up saying: "NT Kernal System has changed since the last time you used it"

Sometimes if I restart it will start properly again in windows 7 but not all the time and sometimes I have to do a system restore to get it back and this is happening more and more. Does this mean my hard drive is dying? Is it time to replace it? My laptop is about 3 years old and I am a pretty heavy user and it runs almost all the time but I really don't know what this means.

I am placing this link to screenshots I took of all the errors:

I ran across this Tweeking .com Windows Repair v2.11.1 utility and ran it twice but it did not fix it. So has anyone else run into this? Is it time for a new hard drive?
