This link should solve your problem. It is related.  [edit]  I should say/warn you that this "MGADiag" tool that they refer to is from M$ and I don't trust their programs, anymore.  This tool checks for Genuine Windows and it may 'bork' (as Shane would say) your system.  Like I said, I'm no 'guru'. [end edit]

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/371639-unable-update-windows-7-service-pack-1-error-code-800b0100.html

It's a fix for this, but not a simple one.  If you are trying to stay away from 'blacklist updates' regarding Win 10 preparatory updates and Win 7 'snooping' updates, you should keep that in mind.  I have posted a tool that might help you with that at:

https://community.norton.com/en/forums/free-program-removes-windows-10-files-and-tracking-updates-windows-7

I should point out that I'm no 'guru' on this.  You could wait to see what the 'keepers' of Windows Repair have to say.  They may have an easier fix. - Art

Shane or Julian will probably be able to upload those files for you with instructions so that you can replace them - may be today or tomorrow when they pick up your thread.

Julian,

those files are part of WAT; I don't think you will find them unless you have the DVD

Hence my suggestions;

I have tried the System update readiness tool.  It asks if I want to install Hotfix update KB947821, to which I reply yes.  Then after 15 min. I get a window stating Installation Complete.  I try the SP1 update again and get the same error.

I've never actually used this Reset Windows Update Agent program but the author states that it has been tested on a number of Windows versions and as you seemed to have tried everything else, thought it may be worth a try.

https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Reset-Windows-Update-Agent-d824badc

To use it, click on the Download button, accept the EULA and select Save then go to the Downloads folder and right click on it to Run as administrator.

This opens in an elevated cmd window with the options for you to select by entering the relevant number for each fix.

Hi, Boggin,
how many links microsoft update tool has. This is a new link, given as codes.
                   Hi, kz fella,
The installation is complete is the success run of readiness tool. Go to checksur.log , a file which would show the present status of windows updates.
You could run this for two times to be sure to have the required correction, like sfc command. The path of log file is c:windows\temp\checksur
Please see this useful link

@ JR - This tool isn't from MS but think along the lines of Shane's program and has been written to address Windows Update problems.

If you run it to get to the menu, you will see that the author says you use it at your own risk and while it has been tested on different versions of Windows, perhaps creating a restore point first could be prudent.

Even Shane's program has a registry back up as a safeguard with Windows being Windows.

And yet from those Packages, it suggests that it's querying the validity.

Have you run a sfc /scannow to see what that reports ?

What are the circumstances that you are just installing SP1 now ?

Boggin,

after the activate windows, the update just hangs.  No error

Why now?  Laptop is old.  Was boggy.  I decided to do a clean install of windows earlier this year.   Had this problem ever since.

Hi, Try this offline installer instead
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5842
select x86 exe if your system is 32 bit or choose accordingly

Perhaps you should try the clean install again or a repair install, or even an offboot sfc /scannow, but let's see what sfc couldn't repair.

Open a cmd prompt as an admin and enter -

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This will put an icon onto the Desktop which will open the CBS log in Notepad which you can then copy & paste into the reply box.
