Hi,
On a computer that has problems running explorer.exe, Windows_Repairs stops when item 03 or 04 are checked.
THe computer crashes in Safe Mode after 5 minutes so Safe Mode is not an option.
Attached 2 logfiles of Windows_Repairs.
How can I solve this issue with Windows_Repairs ?
Thanks, PeterJ

Try the following. It COULD (!!!) help
- Uncheck the problem repairs and run all other repairs. Then simply run all repairs once more.
-
Have you created a Win 10 install disk that you can boot up with ?
If you haven't then you can by using the Download tool now button in https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 but read the section on how to create bootable media.
You will need to change the boot order in the BIOS to boot from the DVD drive before the SSD/HDD - are you using a SSD or HDD ?
You can get into the BIOS by pressing and holding F2 throughout a Restart
Use the cursor keys to navigate to Boot then use F5 or F6 to move the DVD (ODD) drive to the top - insert the disk - press F10 to Exit and Save - confirm
Press any key when prompted to boot from CD/DVD.
Change/confirm the Time and currency format - Next then select Repair your computer
Select Troubleshoot - Command Prompt
Type bcdedit |find "osdevice" and press enter.
That is a Pipe symbol before find and is the upper case of \
Using whichever partition letter, enter chkdsk x: /r where x is the partition letter.
Make a note of what it reports, especially if it reports any KBs in bad sectors.
If it reports any bad sectors, then that will be the cause of the WR failing to run.
Disregard Error 50 as it would normally have created a Wininit entry in Event Viewer but as you are working outside of Windows, then it can't.
When that has completed, enter this command -
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows
Note there is a space before each /
This will take a while to run but will compare and replace any corrupt files from the incorrupt source of the install disk.
Make a note of what that reports then enter exit to close the cmd window - remove the disk and then you can opt to continue with a normal boot or shutdown.
Let us know what those two cmds reported and if they have resolved the explorer problem.

Have you created a Win 10 install disk that you can boot up with ?
No, I'm not the owner of this machine.
Chkdsk c: /r stops at about 10%.
Chkdsk c: /f completes successfully.
SFC /scannow already done: no errors found.
CrystalDiskInfo reports no problem with drive C:

A chkdsk /r can take quite a while on some machines - it just looks like it's frozen but is still working.
Does the machine still crash in Safe Mode even when not running any programs ?
I'm not sure if Event Viewer would have recorded that crash, but check it for the Error time stamps for when it occurred.
There will be quite a few as Windows tries to start services etc. that are blocked in that mode.
Did you use the program to boot to Safe Mode or boot to Safe Mode with Networking and then run the program ?

Yes.

MSCONFIG was used to select Safe Mode, not Windows_Repairs.

I was modifying my last post while you were posting yours.
Can you check Event Viewer to see if anything relates to the crash.
Also go into Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices and look for any yellow alerts, including in System Devices.
For it to crash on its own in that mode would point to a driver problem for me.
In Safe Mode with Networking in Win 10 you need to wire up to get Internet connectivity.

There are none.

I don't see anything wrong at the time Windows_Repairs was run.

I've asked for a second opinion on this as it's rare for a machine to crash on its own in Safe Mode.
Just for clarity, when you used msconfig, did you also check the Network box as well or just the Safe boot one ?

Safe mode with Network. I will check if 'normal safe boot' will make a difference.
-
WR needs to go online when repairing Win 10 because of the apps repair.
Before when you used masconfig, if you had just used Safe boot then you would have gotten an error on the wireless icon because wireless is auto disabled in that mode and you have to wire up to get connectivity.
-
The machine crashes on both: 'normal safe mode' and 'safe mode with network'.

When a program crashes and you don't get a BSOD with a Stop Error Code, I'd either be looking at the HDD or memory.
It's unlikely you will be able to download the 30 day trial of HDSentinel but there are two bootable disks you can create, one to check the HDD and the other to check the memory, but as a quick check for the memory where more than one module is fitted, is to run the machine on just one module at a time and swapping slots.
However any memory test should be run on just one RAM module at a time.
SeaTools for DOS is a bootable disk to check the HDD -
http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/seatools/seatools-dos-master/
And MemTest86+ for the memory - http://www.techfleece.com/2013/07/01/how-to-test-your-ram-sticks-using-memtest86/
-
I'm also thinking that there is a problem with the hard disk, so I instructed the owner to run 'HD Tune' and scan for errors.
I'll wait and see what the result will be and post it here.
-
Does he already have it installed as a 5 min. window may not be sufficient, which is why I've suggested the bootable disks.
-
Not installed yet, he should run it in normal mode.
-
I thought it was crashing in both modes ?
-
In 'normal mode', the explorer crashes. Windows keeps running.
In 'just safe mode' and 'safe mode with network', Windows crashes completely after 5 minutes.
-
I'm surprised Event Viewer doesn't record anything for Windows Explorer stopping.
Are there any USB devices plugged in other than keyboard or mouse or just a mouse with a laptop ?
-
An update on the issues with this machine:
- A Windows 10 in-place install didn't fix the issue. Explorer still crashes in normal mode.
- High fan speed only in normal mode is fixed, this was due high temperatures at the graphics CPU. The fan/CPU was very dusty.
-
Can you check Event Viewer again as I'm surprised this isn't recorded.
-
Something is stopping the program from resetting permissions.
Only a few things can do that - mainly antiviral programs. What are you running?
-
The problem with explorer.exe is fixed.
Disabled manually all services that belongs to "COMODO Firewall" and rebooted. The system runs now normally in normal mode and we were able to run the uninstaller of "COMODO Firewall" successfully.
Thanks for the help.
