I had those error codes 0x80070424 & error code 0x6D9, so I spent the whole day trying to fix it exhausting every possible way of trying to, I came across and used your Windows Repair and my Windows Fire Wall works now! but my Windows Defender stayed the same :( so I improvised and got Windows Security Essentials.... but I'm still hoping Windows Defender can be fixed as well :artist:

What version of windows do you have?
Have you tried these?

I have Windows 7, and my Windows Defender doesn't even show up under services, I can only find it under search and I can only open it, heres screen shots, by the way it doesn't let me uninstall it to reinstall it... if only I could repair it but its no where to be found in programs
-
I think that Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to disable Windows Defender in win 7, but that doesn't explain why it doesn't work.
Have you search for virus or malware?
Have you tried step 1, 2 and 3 in Windows repair?
Tomas

Try running this. It is called autoruns.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902
You don't have to install it. Just run it, click on services tab and see if windows defender is listed there, this should at least let you know if the service is still present. Don't uncheck anything in this program unless you know what your doing, in fact before you run it, create a restore point! LOL! This little utility will show you almost everything running. It should look like my attachment. You can also see what drivers are running or not and a whole host of other process's.

Yes I searched with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Charter Security Suite, Windows Fixit, and the list goes on.. and yeah I did the step 1,2,3 in windows repair thats how I got the windows fire wall up and running, but it didn't affect the Windows defender for some reason

This will just show me if its running or not? it doesn't show up in services on my computer lol

You can run "Farbar Service Scanner" to see if these services are ok:
Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center
Windows Update

You might just need to find the reg keys for Defender

Shane

Where do I find those Shane?
-
Check the registry and see if you have this
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinDefend
If you dont try the reg file I attached
Shane
-
Do I just double click it and accept? because I did and when I tried opening Windows Defender still got the same error :omg:
-
Extract the zip file, run the reg file and then reboot :-)
Let me know if the reg file gives an error when you do.

Shane you almost saved the day again! it WORKED but then THIS happend...
It worked for a couple of seconds that I had it opened then it stopped and I tried starting it again and got that error
-
Check if the reg key got deleted again. If it did you still have an infection bud
I am going to have to add this regkey to the windows repair tool soon :-)
Shane
-
I also get this, is it because Windows Security Essentials has disabled it?
-
Check this out Shane..
-
Did you go to the registry and check if the key is still there or if it has been deleted?
Shane
-
Is there hidden folders I need to navigate through to find the registry?
-
No just go to start and int he run box put in regedit and hit enter.
In the registry see if this is still there.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinDefend
Finished my workout and cooking dinner for the wife and kids, so I may not respond till later
New big bang theory on tonight, woot! lol
Shane
-
Yeah its not there :\ I appreciate the time your taking to help me Shane! hope your having a great day aside from helping me with this pain
-
If it isnt there then something deleted it again, which means your still infected bud.
Try these tools
tdsskiller.exe
http://support.kaspersky.com/5350
and
Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/mbar/
Shane
-
Try both? I tried the second one (the first one found nothing) and restarted after and replaced the windows defender file you gave me and restarted.. still nothing lol
-
Then you might have a new rootkit infection that isnt detected yet.
A repair install would be the next best thing, you will keep all your programs and settings but Windows will get reinstalled.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html
And since you have Windows 7 with SP1 you will need a disk of Windows 7 with SP1 already on it, if you dont have one you can grab an image here
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3316.2-1-microsoft-windows-7-official-iso-download-links-digital-river.aspx
Shane
-
Should I just restore my computer to factory settings then?
-
If you do that you will lose everything and the computer will be put back tot he way it was when you got it. DONT DO IT lol
Just download the iso, burn it to a disk and follow the guide I gave you

It says it will whipe out stuff too so isnt it the same as a restore to factory settings lol because I do have the windows 7 disk
-
A repair install wont wipe the drive, your doing a repair install not a fresh one :-)
No matter what backup your stuff lol
Shane
-
Question, does it only require one restart or what? can I look at the guide while doing it or will I have to look at the guide on the ipod or something lol
-
Keep the guide handy you will be rebooting. But once started you should be good to go.
Shane
-
Thanks Shane I did it all and I can find it under on services but when I find it and try to turn it on (while Windows Security Essentials is on...) should it be giving me this? is this normal... aside from that my computer is now lightning fast! :artist:
-
You dont want defender enabled if you have another antivirus installed. DO you have any others installed? My self I use the free version of Avast.
Shane
-
The last time I used windows security essentials, it did disable windows defender. I'm guessing it still does.
Chris
-
Yeah I got Windows Security Essentials and I searched that error code and I guess its just that, so I'm good! thanks for all your help guys much appreciated :cheesy:
-
Glad to of helped :-)
