No answer provided by the MS experts.
Attached shows the generic icon, applied to docx files. All other Office program files (Excel, PP, etc.) have correct icons. Why not Word 2013 documents?

That is going to be a regkey setting I bet. As with some of my programs I have to set the icon to use in the registry so Windows knows which icon to use.
Like on my system I have office 2007 and I have regkeys like this telling the system what icon to use
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\Windows\\Installer\\{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}\\wordicon.exe,13"

attached pic shows same regkey on mine
would the icons for Office Word 2013 be stored someplace else?
-
Yeah there is actually a bit of them in different places. Gets a little annoying lol.
But lets also make sure you have the file wordicon.exe
Since it looks like this is where it pulls the icon from.

Keep in mind my office is 2007 so make sure to check in the folder that is listed in your registry key you posted

Hope this doesn't sound as ridiculous as I think it does ...
Found several locations for wordicon.exe in the registry. One pic attached.
Then searched for wordicon.exe under C:\Windows and found it listed under C:\Windows\Installer. Pic attached. But note that C:\Windows\Installer isn't shown in Windows Explorer list. So the file is there but it isn't there.
Lost for words.

Here's the Explorer list under Windows. No 'Installer' listed.

This Freeware utility 'Types' enables me to change icons, including the icon for Word files.
Here's the link http://izt.name/apps/types/
It worked.

Glad you got it working :-)
The reason why it wasnt working was because the regkey was pointing to the wrong folder.
Look at the regkey you posted here
http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php/topic,1112.msg7501.html#msg7501
You will see it doesnt match the path where the icon exe was.

The Types 'solution' is a bandaid. I like your real solution.
I 'assume' I can manually change the registry key and point it to where wordicon.exe really is? Fixes being rarely simple, just want to verify. Thanks.
-
Correct
Just have the regkey point to the correct spot :-)
I dont know which keys the types program changes though.

I found the regkey that 'Types' changed and changed the direction to wordicon.exe here C:\Windows\Installer\{91150000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}
Lo and behold (see attached), it worked.
You did it again, Shane.

Glad I could help :-)
So remember, anything that has to do with what icon to show will always be in the registry. :-)
