Title: Problems with IE & Firefox
Post by: yamatosoul on January 26, 2012, 12:32:29 pm
About 2 wks ago, I uninstalled Kaspersky Internet Suite and installed Norton 360 in its place.  At the same time, I set up a wireless router.  After that, I started noticing that my browsers (IE & Firefox) were no longer behaving the same.  The problems were as follows:

1) Firefox:  Hangs a lot, many of the links on my Yahoo homepage no longer works, many of the video links from Yahoo no longer works

2) IE:  Does not hang like Firefox, but exhibits the same problems with the links, both video and non-video

I ran Windows Repair, but that didn't help.  I uninstalled Norton and directly connected the modem to my PC, but that also did not help.  I am currently using Chrome which does not seem to exhibit any of the problems that the other two are showing, but I would really like to get back control of my main browsers.  Can you help me with this?

Thank you,

Max

In addition to Shane's advice above, did you run the Kaspersky removal tool and the Norton removal tool after uninstall?  Both of these AV's leave behind an awful lot of crap that you need those tools to remove.  See it all the time, especially with Norton.

That's another thing I did.  I ran tried running both browsers with all addons turned off, but it made no difference.

Yes, I'm aware of all the crap that these two programs leave behind, but I didn't run the specific removal tools you mentioned.  I ran IOBIT Uninstaller to remove the remaining crap out of my system.  Do you think I need to run the specific removal tools you mentioned?

On a video link, it takes me to the video page and the circle in center of the screen spins endlessly.  On that same page, if I click on a non-video link, it does absolutely nothing.  Chrome has none of these problems and I have some of the same addon enabled on it as well.

I wonder if it might be flash doing it.

When was the last time you updated flash? And java for that point. (Both of these are how a lot of new viruses get in, so staying up to date on them is a must)

Are you running Windows 7?  Have you checked your Security and Privacy settings in Internet Properties?

Maybe also try clicking the Reset button on the Advanced tab in Internet Properties.

Good point about flash and java.  Definitley update both of those anyway.

Thanks for all your advice.  Updating Flash fixed IE, but nothing seems to help Firefox.  So, I just reinstalled it and it's working fine.  I thought it was a problem caused by Norton, but I guess not.  Thanks again.

BTW, thank you so much for Windows Repair All in One.  It's an awesome program!

I'm betting Norton overwrote one or more of the files that Firefox uses to communicate with the internet...  I remember similar problems with Norton, but that was years ago.
