Title: Nothing I do seems to help
Post by: fireguy4k on April 27, 2014, 02:52:23 pm
Hi, I found tweaking on google search last year and have ran it a number of times as recent as today. I read how others are fixed and keep hoping mine will be but nothing seems to help. I cannot get windows to  update anything except MSE, and havent for over a year. Always says to restart, then I do, then it says last update never, I click on check for updates and then Im back to it saying restart.  One big loop, insanity! I have Windows Vista home premium service pack 2. 32bit.
Have ran superspyware, malewarebytes, Microsoft security essentials, Webroot secure anywhere, seems like its all clean, just nothing works to start updating.

Try this, open a cmd.exe as administrator, once it is open run
Compcln.exe

And have it do its work then reboot. Once backup run the system readiness tool
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=1540

Once it is done reboot one more time and then try the Windows updates

Sorry, not that easy. Did the cmd promp, I guess it ran, it asked if I wanted to and I said yes. Then left it for 8 hours or so. Restarted, tried the link you gave. Downloaded but would not run error 0x80070422.
Did all this twice. Not working, also tried the windows update after all this now I get"windows update cannot check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."
Have another idea?

Go to services and see if the BITS service is there and running.

Ok and what happens when you try to start it?

Also open regedit and go to hkey_local_machine\system\current_control_set\services\bits

Do you get any access denied errors when you try to view it?

OK good bits is running, that is needed for the updates.

How about the Windows firewall?

Odd, i wonder what service the update is complaining about then.

I am in the process of doing final testing to the Windows repair v2.7.0 where I did a total overhaul of the permissions repairs and a bunch of other stuff and added a new repair to reset service permissions.

Might be worth a shot to see if the new version can work this out.

So far I am testing running every single repair on every version of Windows since XP inside vmware and so far everything is looking great. barring any bugs I find I plan on having the new version out tomorrow morning :-)

I will be your 1st test case in the morn then... Let me know when its up and ready. Hope something works out. Thank you for working on this for us.

The testing is just about done, and I am just fixing a shutdown with the program code and then I am done for the night, if you like I can hook you up with it as soon as I am done so that way if you spot anything I need to fix or change before tomorrows release I can get it done :-)

Ok I will wait up a few for that. I will start it up, let it run and check first thing in the am about 645 central time and let you know how it went.

OK here you go.
http://www.tweaking.com/files/setups/test/tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio_setup.exe

I will delete that link tomorrow since we only need it for you to grab it, file was to big to attach to the post :-)

Run the setup and you will have the new version.

Make sure to do a registry backup with it first before the repairs and then make sure to run all the repairs and you can have it set to auto reboot as well after the repairs are done :-)

Here is the new changelog:
Code: [Select]
v2.7.0
Added a new startup check to the program. The program will now check that all files needed for the repairs in the program folder are present.
If files are missing then the repair that needs those files will fail, which can cause bad side effects depending on the repair.
So now the program will do a quick check and if any files are missing, the program will let you know which files and ask you to reinstall the program to make sure all files are there.
You can not continue with the program if any files are missing. If all files are present then it automatically continues to the normal start window of the program.

Added a new repair "Reset Service Permissions" This repair will add permissions on all services on the current system. Administrators = Full, System = Full, TrustedInstaller = Full

"Reset Registry Permissions" & "Reset File Permissions" have been completely redone. The program was using subinacl.exe to set permissions but it was only 32 bit and didn't access the 64 bit locations.
This has been replaced with SetAcl.exe which supports 32 and 64 bits. So now on a 64 bit OS all areas get their permissions set.
Because this can now access all locations the 2 repairs are a little slower and it doesn't have the progress screen that the subinacl.exe did.
So the cmd window has been updated to not show what current key or file it is on as it slowed down the repair by a very very large amount because the CPU was being used to draw all the text to the cmd.exe window.
So by not having it display all that information the speed of the repair is much better.

Since "Reset File Permissions" now uses a new exe the exclusions part has been changed, if you used this option in the program please see the text files on how to use exclusions.

For Vista and newer versions of Windows "Reset Registry Permissions" & "Reset File Permissions" now also adds the "TrustedInstaller" account with Full access rights.

Updated multiple repairs to better handle Windows 8 and 8.1 and all the fussy stuff it wants, making the repairs better than ever for Windows 8 & 8.1 :-)

Multiple code changes and improvements.

No change here for me... Updates still not working, same as my first post. Infinite loop... Thanks for trying....

Well ok then lol

Lets find out what service it is complaining about. Have you checked the event viewer after trying to update to see if it has any information about it?

And on the updates, how many are there that try to install? And do all updates fail or only certain ones?

its going to be a few hours before I can get back to the computer to check on that but I will when I get back. Thanks

I think there is like 16,000 errors and warnings on the event viewer under Administrative events.Sll the way back to 2012. Also MSE is the only thing that updates. The computer wont even look for udates, repeats saying to restart cause its currently installing...

Go to C:\Windows\WinSxS\

Scroll to the bottom of all the folders, what files do you have there?

OK, that error tells me that the system certificates are corrupted.

As a test, create a new user account on Windows, reboot and then log into the new account and see how Windows updates go.

If a new useraccount doesnt do it then we need to look at the certificate files that are system wide.

Ok. now look at this page and I want you to check each of the services it lists, make sure they are set to automatic and that they are running. Let me know any that are not

when i first clicked on the Windows update under services a pop up said:   Configuration manager: The specified device instance handle does not correspond to a present device.

But when I click on OK it went to the window that said it was automatic and started.

The link you sent said to place it on manual under the BITS ... I did not I left it automatic.

Looks like everthing is set to automatic.... Is started the same thing as running?

open regedit and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
If there is an enum key here, rename it to old_renum
this should fix this issue related to Configuration Manager: The Specified device instance handle does not correspond to a present device.

You may need to reboot. And yes if a service is started then it is running. where all of them running?

Post by: fireguy4k on April 29, 2014, 02:33:21 pm
the only enum was under Current control set    not  Services.  It would not allow me to rename it, but it wasnt the one you were looking for as it was not under services.

Yes they were all auto and started.

Given the fact that there is certificate corruption in the system that is causing it then a repair install would be best.

Nice thing about a repair install is it acts like an upgrade, so all your programs and files stay.

Do you have a vista with sp2 disk?

What brand and model? Sometimes they have a option in them to burn the files you need to a disk, I can look that up for you.

Well I found this, but I have never done it, so if you do make sure to backup your data to an external hard drive just in case :-)

Code: [Select]
In Advanced Boot Options, highlight Repair Your Computer and press Enter.
Click Next and logon to the administrator account in the computer.
Click Dell DataSafe Restore and Emergency Backup and DataSafe Options.
Choose Restore with preserving new or changed file. Click Next to continue.
Choose Yes and click Next to continue.
Progress status will appear. Click Restart to initiate the restoration process.

Or better yet we try to find a vista sp2 disk you can download, but I have only been able to find Windows 7 disks.

I use Carbonite for storage.. I dont have an external.
I can ask around for a sp2 disk but since I have everthing to Carbonite I may still try it. Been hoping to not have to go that route but looks like its necessary.
thanks again
will update later this week
