Title: new folder option gone !
Post by: micky on July 14, 2014, 07:33:09 am
I am running vista and when I right click a blank space to bring up the options in order to create a new folder. I then click 'NEW' and it says 'empty' and I am unable to create a new folder.
The same thing happens should I use the other option of clicking 'File' on the task bar.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.,, Im not pc savy

Hi Shane,
Thanks for the help. I did as you suggested but to no avail. Then I did it again just to make sure I did it right. Still no joy.
Ive just noticed that I not only the New folder option is gone but all the other options too,, open new zip file, brief case etc, it just dawned on me as I was going to use it to open your zip file !
Ive got a feeling my problem stems from deleting google chrome. It may have taken needed files with it.
What a bummer as I use loads of new folders for my art work and photo images. Another bummer is that even system restore cant help as it has only saved 3 recent safe points.
Im just wondering if I save new folders from my lap top on a memory stick then re-download the to the effected pc would that get me out of a scape. who knows ! Not ideal but hey,,Im an artist we are all not right in the head  :undecided:

The right menu "new" section is all stored in the registry. Windows 7 should have the same menu settings as vista but it may not, let me install vista in vmware real fast and get the regkeys for the right click menu and have you try it :-)

It might be that the UAC didnt allow you to import the regkey I gave you, do you have the UAC turned off?

Dont know what a UAC is Shane, however I did get a notice that your file had been added to the reg

Got to the UAC thing,,, it looks like it was already off as there is a tick box requesting it ticked for UAC to be turned on Shane.

Not sure what it is then. I did a search on that and almost all results showed that it is due to a missing registry key, which I had you put back in.

Some people had the problem with Norton installed and it came back after they uninstalled norton, not sure if that is the problem with yours or not.

Have you tried opening a command prompt as an administrator and entering the command chkdsk /f which will run on the next reboot after typing y and pressing enter, or you could just enter chkdsk which is a read-only mode and that will tell you if there are any corrupt files or bad sectors and will tell you to run the chkdsk /f if it finds any corrupt files.

To close the command window if the just the read-only mode has been used and it doesn't find any corruption, type exit then press enter.

You should have the UAC enabled.

Dont laugh,,,I saved a bunch of new folders to a stick drive on my other pc (laptop) and downloaded them to the main pc,,,,,,,,it actually worked  :smiley:
Not ideal,, but has got me a bit further with what I need to do

If there's ever anything you are unsure how to do, then Google it for your system.

e.g.

how do i run command prompt as administrator in vista and you'll probably see a link that will give you http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-elevated-command-prompt/

That's how most of us have learned  :smiley:

Well I am at a loss so far. I had you put the registry keys back in that are used for the menu and all system files check out.

I have one more test in mind, I want you to create a new user account, just for this test, and then log in with the new account and see if the menu shows up there.

Go to the control panel and then users and you can create a new user there. Let me know how it goes :-)

I don't know if your .zip did this Shane, but a Google for the problem came up the solution of recreating the Public key  for one user http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/252277-44-folder-problems

That is something different, this has to do with the "New" menu being empty when you right click inside a folder or on the desktop. Nothing to do with renaming or moving a folder.

Wow,,that was scary until I realizd a new user wouldnt have a desktop like mine  !
,,,did as you said Shane and checked it out,,, still says empty when I cllick 'New'

OK - if it was known when this first occurred (and not just found out) the restore points could resolve.

Micky, have you downloaded any programs recently or since you last used the new folder option ?

Well lets double check that the registry keys we added are still there and something isnt removing it.

Open regedit and confirm that these are in the registry

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New

On the right when you click on it you will see "Default" and it should have the value of {D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}

Next will be

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\ShellNew

Make sure that is there as well and it should have some values of
IconPath
and also
"ItemName"="@shell32.dll,-30396"
"MenuText"="@shell32.dll,-30317"
"NonLFNFileSpec"="@shell32.dll,-30319"

That not may have been when it happened but after checking the registry keys as Shane has just suggested, then trying a restore point prior to uninstalling Chrome may/not produce anything.

Off to roost.

Depending upon what Shane can do with those, for me this is looking more like a factory reset or a repair install, but the latter for Vista can be a bit involved if you don't have an install disk that doesn't include SP2 http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

OK I am going to do one last thing, I am going to go and grab every registry key I can find that has to do with that and get a new reg file for you to try. But first, are you on 32bit or 64bit windows?

Shane
Title: Re: new folder option gone !
Post by: Shane on July 17, 2014, 10:21:58 am
OK so I searched the registry for everything that had to do with the new menu and anything with the shellnew command. Found 35 locations lol

And I put them all into one reg file for you. Open the zip file and if you are on a 32 bit system run the file that says 32bit, if you are on 64bit run the 64bit reg file in the file.

Once done reboot and lets see how it does. If this fixes it I may add this as a new repair in my Windows repair program :-)

 :smiley: Shane my jaw just hit the keyboard,, how are you at fixing jaws ?
You fixed it, everything is back, new folder,shortcut, contact,briefcase, compressed zip,,,,,,its all back.
You not only fixed it but taught me a bag full of things I never even heard off.
Your understanding of people that are not conversant with pc workings is outstanding.
Thank you so much as there is no way I could have had my computer fixed or replaced.
