Make sure to post in the right forum section, I moved this thread for you :-)

Are you trying to access the computer shares by the computer name? YES: go to (Network) double-click PC Name to find
\\sharename to double-click and access.

If so try a test and try connecting to them by IP [I did this and made a shortcut]

so go to start and run (works in Search, too) and type in

\\146.450.xxx.xxx

Replace the X's with the actual IP of the computer you are trying to access and let me know if that works [yes, tried it]

Did a search on 0x8007035 in Win 8.1: Network name not found and it said to Set NetBIOS on.

I have seen some firewall software block this before as well, what antivirus/firewall do you have installed?

Also are you able to ping the IP?

[Bitdefefender Free, Win 8.1 Std FW]

Also are you able to ping the IP? [Yes: See: http://www.softperfect.com/products/networkscanner/] I did some folder Permission changes and all work. When I d/c on Network icon and see //<sharenames> PC Name, I get the error. Yet, these work arounds work. I'm baffled why? - Don

The network shares themselves have to have the proper permissions, I have seen that in windows, and there is actually 2 permissions that have to be set on the machine that is sharing the folder.

You have to set the permissions for the sharing AND the permissions for the folder and files as well. On my home network I set everyone full access in the sharing permissions and then set everyone to full on the folder permissions and on all child objects. Otherwise it will only work if the person who is connecting has the creditnals (A user name and password set on the host machine)

Thats windows networking for you lol

Did all this above and still get Network path not found error. Using VMWare player to run Win 8.1 Pro x64.

In vmware how do you have the network setup in the settings? In vmware I use I always use bridged mode, so that way the vmware gets a ip from the same router as the rest of the computers and I dont have to deal with a 2nd network.

Yes, but windows doesnt normally ask for the file and print sharing, double check the firewall and make sure file and print sharing are allowed on all profiles.

Also, do you have sharing setup to use home groups? (I dont ever use home groups)
